It really is sad how much garbage VALVe gets for being a "monopoly". They do have competition and they don't step on the toes of those trying to make alternatives to them, but simply due to greed of companies many of them are simply worse options to use. Like I find that hard to classify as a "monopoly" simply due to the failures of their competition.
@@Flamme-SanabiEpic literally made a worse game launcher and exclusivity deal with game companies then blames VALVᵉ because "they took too much revenue cut" from publishers
That indeed. Valve also does provide great PR and data for game makers, so I have heard from other videos on the "Valve is a monopoly" topic.@@wibs0n68
Yeah, Epic and its fans really tried to push the "Valve monopoly" narrative even though Valve's monopoly was due to them simply providing a better service. Epic, on the other hand, pay devs and publishers to keep exclusive games to themselves. Basically using money to strong-arm their way to the top instead of improving their own platform.
while valve takes too much revenue that doesn't change the fact that epic games launcher is HORRIBLE when you compare it to steam. Valve is more succesful with a reason. They made great things like the valve index or the steam deck. They know how to make good things@@thatonespooder1513
A major difference is how they develop their games Nintendo is more streamlined, there's an alpha, beta, pre-release, followed by retail Valve another difference is in finding information of the earlier stages of their games and how they chanced with Nintendo, plenty of information exists but is hindered by a language barrier and hidden beneath pages upon pages in some random Japanese news article Valve
"A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad" - Shigeru Miyamoto "Late is just for a little while, suck is forever" - Gabe Newell
While usually true it’s not always the case. There are some games that get stuck in development hell for many years and release with outdated graphics/game design. Those quotes apply to a time in which games took less than 2 years to make unlike nowadays which could take up to a decade, not to mention the fact that they cost millions of dollars more. These companies have to estimate approximately how long the development process will be so while delays are sometimes necessary delaying for a long period of time is just bad management. Edit: That’s why I said “while usually true” but there are always exceptions.
@@_M41KU_ Those types of games would, generally, very, very rarely have been considered "good" if they were released on schedule anyway. Meanwhile, Half-Life, Portal, Mario, etc are still considered gold standards in their respective categories decades later.
I think he said something closer to "a game is only late until it ships." Of course, if your quote is accurate, then it was said years before console games started getting massive mandatory day one patches. So a bad game would have stayed bad.
Me who modded my Switch: I live in the US Nintendo, you're bullshit doesn't apply here. If it breaks, it breaks, if I get banned I get banned, the modded switch is a burner anyway, none of my online related stuff is there anyway.
3:48 Common misconception right there: The HL2 leak didn't affect too much how the game turned out. At most some level layouts and not much else. Valve had already discarded this "dark and griddy" atmosphere, commonly associated with pre-release HL2. You can see this in the original leak wich is basically an unfinished retail HL2. The leak mainly affected the team's morale, with all the backlash from the community
The videogame market was essentially being utilized and expanded in the US. If the US lost interest then the rest of the world would have followed suit also. No idea where this idea came from
@@VEE0034 No it wouldn't 😂 the global market wasn't as globalized as it is today. There were plenty of console markets in Europe and Asia. As well as the PC market lile the C64 being big at the time.
Nintendo's philosophy of fan content: " If the fan content is in the form of a video game, Its theft. " Valve's philosophy of fan content: " If it's in the form of a video game, Its free advertising. if it isn't in the form of a video game, its free advertising. "
Depends, there's years where nintendo doesn't care, some where they'll go after things related to recent release and there's been a few moment where they went on a rampage on rom site or fan game distributing site.
Nintendo mostly ignores fan games. They only take down fan games/videos if they're releasing a game similar to it. The creator of AM2R called it out. Nintendo has not taken down Mario World mods since Mario Maker 1 and have never touched Mario 64 mods. The Smash community is a case where I'm 100% ok with Nintnedo fucking over.
Nintendo doesn't operate like a normal video game company, they operate like a normal company that happens to be in the video game market. This is an important distinction because the crunch time and long hours associated with video game development with almost all employees having a typical 9 to 5, and their three offices jave staff retention rates more typical of a financial institution then a video game company, which is ironic given Sony has a credit card subsidiary in Japan.
How I’ve heard it is that Nintendo was always a toy company and they apply that same concept to video games. The games are simply toys meant to have fun
@@SINfromPLcause countless of those "never getting launched" indies (I'm assuming you're talking about Early Access) are vastly superior to 99.99% of Triple A slop that has come out in the last decade.
That was a surprisingly good video, and no you did not antagonize Nintendo (you honestly made me sympathize with them a little bit). As a fan of both companies, I'm glad to see a video that highlights their similarities of how they are just so damn different and cool with how they develop software/games. (Both Valve and Nintendo also dominate every "Top games of all time" list too coincidence? I think not.)
I'm glad i could provide something entertaining. Going into making this video, I was worried that I didn't seem informed enough about Nintendo since I haven't played many of their games as much as I did for valve.
The continued existence of Steam relies on PC as an open platform, and moves by Microsoft suggest they may be tempted to close down Windows into a walled garden. Linux is Valve's escape hatch.
@@suuslime3908Splatoon has loot boxes too. Also, remember that Splatoon is like a cartoony class based shooter. Does it sound familiar? Of course, it's like TF2. Team Fortress, if you like it or not, was the first class based shooter that was maybe even the inspiration for one of your games. Also, Valve has made few franchises, yes, but countless of games, and 95% of them are masterpieces.
Even though I love Nintendo to death. I gotta my utmost respect to valve as well. These 2 have always pushed the industry forward, and gaming has benefited from them. Sure, they may have their flaws (one more than the other), but these 2 have always been the standard, and hopefully, they'll still be in the future. (And hopefully Nintendo stops being so stingy)
As a HUGE nintendo fan id have to say this was a really good video i knew most of the stuff about nintendo beforehand so i somewhat understand why they are the way they are i do think they go a little overboard with some stuff and i learned a whole bunch of stuff about value which was cool too.
Valve not only lets you sell games using their IPs on their store, they also lets you sell a whole remake of their game (Black Mesa). Nintendo DMCA any kind of fangame regarding if you make money or not if it attracts a lot of attention (AM2R). Therefore, Valve is better.
Valve, Nintendo and OG Rareware are the absolute KINGS of gaming. They may have their problems, and corporations are not our friends, but the people who worked or do work there pushed gaming as a whole so much forward and made most of my favourite games of all time.
@radioactivephil6888 I agree with you. I wish that dumbass Valve fans would stop worshipping the freaking company that it could do no wrong when comparing it to Nintendo. If they repeat the same shit Valve Good Nintendo Bad this stuff will feel too elitist and Mean Spirited
Nintendo riders are crazy, I could never imagine lying about every game being a banger, I'm a fan of Nintendo, the company sees us as a number and treats us as such.
Theyre the only AAA studio without shareholders holding them hostage. That would explain a lot. Privately operated, self-published studio with a metric fuck-ton of money to do whatever they want with. Theyre truly an anomaly. You can't reasonably expect this from any other company
other companies focuses on quantity over quality, hell some focus more on money than both quantity and quality but valve focuses on quality more than quantity, alot more, like I can't stress enough how much more
I love Valve. If Valve was a country, even if I wasn't a citizen I would join Valve as a volunteer fighter should a war threaten their existence. There are very few things Valve has done I don't like and that's the creation of Artifact and the emphasis of esports in Counter Strike. But then again I can't blame them for that since everyone else is going for that esports hype train. They are one of the few companies in this greedy era in this greedy nation that I could put my trust into. They could have a health care company or be running hospitals and I'd trust them with my life. I trust them that much. The only thing I'm afraid of is what happens after Gabe Newell passes away. I hope his successor is at least half as good as he was.
Valve helped make Linux a viable gaming platform and the steamdeck is an amazing little console. Can’t wait for a full on living room console with SteamOS.
If it weren't for me finding Portal 5 years ago, I would've committed suicide. I am serious. That game was the only thing keeping me going in the circumstances I lived in, and after the loss of my friend in summer 2023 Half-Life was the only thing keeping me together. In a way they are a healthcare company 🤔 (For anyone curious, yes I am OK now and living with my family in a healthy, safe environment :))
@phoenixrising4995 I mean you *could* just place your Steam Deck in a dock and connect another controller. But yeah having a beefier system would be preferable if you don't care about portability.
Simply put, both companies make fantastic games that rarely miss the mark, and both have extremely loyal fanbases, the type of loyalty other companies can only dream of. They may do questionable or baffling things sometimes, but they're still better than a lot of modern AAA game companies.
I'd say the main thing that unites these companies is that they are both very closed to the public. While valve allows modifying their games and rarely strikes stuff with dmca, both valve and nintendo rarely talks about their plans or announces anything far in advance. The stuff like dolphin situation is just basic industry thing, if you have contacts in the company, you just reach out, officially or non-officially. While it might sound like valve betrayed players by talking to nintendo, first of all, it's still a kinda-closed in itself industry, everyone knows everyone. Knowing people and being in a good relationship with as many of them as possible, this makes possible releasing your games faster on the platforms/stores, getting answers to your questions or some benefits in the deals you make. Another thing that is probably unites both companies is that they have a huuuuuge pile of cash available. Nintendo can survive (technically) years without getting profits, same for valve. This probably means that both of them can invest these funds into people not just working on a current projects, but always, constantly trying new stuff, new games, creating new devices, without most of it making to the market/real product phase. But only this kind of rnd (research and development) allows companies to innovate. For example, Nintendo and motion controls - they started it with the wii, and they are still using it with the switch years later. Valve and steam deck, they behan tinkering with the linux devices by introducing linux support on steam and steam machines (which failed) and then making hardware with the steam controller (which also was rough but very interesting concept), and then years later both of these programs evolved into steam deck.
Valve is one of the best companies in history, they are private, push technology everytime, has some cult-classic games that are still played by millions everyday and they are in the game to create quality products, not just to make money. I love Gabe, Steam and Valve! They are the few right things in gaming and business world.
The only thing that different from both company are how they treat their fanbase Nintendo love their fan but they are overprotective of their ip While Valve are more open and sometime support community tournament And yes if you want to be hired by valve create a mod that was revolutional not normal game Also Nintendo actually not that bad considering the fact toby fox the creator of undertale being hired by Nintendo to make pokemon ost Which was amazing
Nintendo is said to be a great workplace, in Japan at least. Compared to other japanese companies which can be very oppressive towards their employees, Nintendo pays well, but also treats their workers well. So at the very least they are a good company for workers, which is great in my book. Don’t know about nintendo of america tho.
@@TheHENOOB publishers still provide a monumental amount of support to the developers. and it is not a valid excuse for the absolutely horrid development process GameFreak forces on their developers. Severely overworked programmers
Valve sells their classic masterpieces at a very cheap price in my country, nintendo makes the game unavailable for decades then sell them at an unreasonable price for a limited time period.
Amazing vid thanks. A small detail I really appreciated was how you specified that the game crash happened in America. A lot of RU-vid videos never specify that implying the entire planet had a videogame crash. A small detail but I really appreciate it. Nice unique video topic as well.
Honestly another thing to consider is when you think of Japan, you might think of pokemon. Nintendo is kind of a face of a country in terms of culture. I don't think people realise that's why they're so sensitive to modded material on their products. But, their brands are a huge responsibility to make sure they're consistent, that they established rules, and even if a mod is really good and such, Nintendo cannot just let a few mods slide, otherwise it's not fair for others and such, so they have to be strict on it. That's my take on that concept, because I got faced with a DMCA from Nintendo one time for a project and they actually liked the project, but it's still against the rules. :') Fan art is kind of different, cause they can't exactly DMCA it, they'd try to if they could!
Cry more kid. Nintendo has proven time and time again they're nothing but a typical, money grubbing corporation. Releasing mediocre products at insane price points and threatening everyone with some sort of legal action over the slightest perceived "violation" of their IPs. They get no sympathy from me.
Nintendo is why I started, valve is why I kept going, Nintendo might make pretty good games, but valve is my default, and with steam, the most reliable and good one as well
the reason valve hasnt made hl3 yet is because they're waiting for new tech to show off each half-life game shows off different tech that was new at the time hl1 was scripted sequences and skeletons for animating hl2 was physics half-life alyx was vr
they are sisiphys. They are making half life 3 be best thing of the time, the time passes, now they need to make it even better, they make it better, time passes, they need new tech for it, since that would be cool, they start making the tech, time passes, they need to develop the game on new tech, time passes, the tech now is old by nowadays standards...
Nintendo has been dipping their toes on games for smartphones/tablets for a little while now, it would be great if they did the same with PC. Though it likely will never happen, it would be amazing if they ever got into an agreement of some sort with Valve and ported some of their games (or made new ones) for PC, exclusively to be sold on Steam. I'm pretty sure nearly no one would be against it if it happened.
I find it amazing how Valve gets so much hate, despite simply being... A really great company. Sure they have some down sides, but nothing is perfect. People love seeing things as just plain black and white and hate for the sake of hating. Epic suffers from this too, Riot games, etc. Kinda sad ngl Valve cares a lot about their workers, and that's super wonderful. No wonder they are so highly valued.
I've seen little hate toward VALVe, the most hate I've seen is things like the lack of updates for TF2, The fact that we STILL don't have Half-Life 3 or Portal 3, and the fact that instead of doing those things, they make a MOBA.
Ey 2 points that i need to add 1 the time that nintendo sent a sease and desist to the guy that was making etika themed controlers That situation was wildly miss informed because mainly the guy that was making them had some shady stuff going on with the way that he sold the controllers And 2 i can understand people saying that nintendo hates there fans but also one undeniable thing They really do treat there employees well unlike MOST other companies
Yep. Nintendo has one of the highest employee retention rates in the industry. As corporate as Nintendo are, they truly understand how important their developers are to their success. Nintendo got decades of knowledge and experience within their employees.
Great video man! I thought the same about the Portal collection being released on Switch alongside the Deck. I thought it was kinda sweet of VALVe to release it for Nintendo. They were a big inspiration on getting Gabe into the gaming industry in the first place. Would be cool to see the collaborate on something together sometime in the future.
Yes and no. While Nintendo has some of the most profitable IP's in the world, the company itself isn't as valuable compared to other entertainment companies and it's more vulnerable to go bankrupt since it's mainly a videogame hardware and software developer, unlike Sony or Microsoft. So they went for the Apple strategy of giving a premium look to their customers and injecting the idea that "Nintendo games are only played on Nintendo consoles". This is why they are so conservative and protective with their IP's. This also explains why their games almost never go on sale and why they charge you $60 for a 5 year old game.
Portal 1 and 2 where both ported to android for the tegra 4 and k1 and continued support up till the shield TV (Tegra X1) which is used in the switch today. With this game being optimized for ARM and the switche's chip... It only made sense for a port to release to switch.
ive seen some people say this already but i think the reason valve has a "monopoly" on the pc game market is because most other pc game stores either dont have much or came too late. so many people already have hundreds of games on steam, so why change to a worse client that gives free games that are mostly trash every week? at this point i dont think that steam can be taken over unless there was a client that somehow had "crossbuy" with steam
While other companies, including Epic were declaring PC gaming as "dead" and console gaming as the future, Valve focused on making Steam better. Now Steam is a juggernaut and those other guys regret their previous bets and want a piece, but they don't want to do the actual work required to make it happen.
The reason why is because it stole assets from a tf2 leak which isnt cool (I mixed it up it wasnt leaked assets since all of the assets are public for tf2. But what i meant was the code that just got ported to source 2)
I can't believe you glossed over the fact that Valve's introduction of the trading card system was solely and directly inspired by Nintendo's initial venture into playing cards.
Nin literally did this to Cadence of Hyrule. Dev wanted to add some Nintendo characters to his game and got offered to make a full on Zelda game instead. The only difference is that they dont reach out to modders and studios, but they don't mind if you reach out to them with your idea.
Nintendo HAD several monopoly policies, back when "they saved the video game industry". Steam is also a huge corporation, but it has a more friendly aproach to people than Nintendo.
I found valve through nintendo, I loved playing warioware on the gamecube but i lost the disk for it and I tried to look up if there was a version for on pc(I didn't really know that nintendo primarly keep their games to their console), I ended up finding a custom gamemode for TF2 and that's when I learned about valve.
@horiz9095 no Nintendo is better off collaborating with the Japanese company Toho so the Heisei Godzilla would be in smash not Valve's Heavy ever since Valve is a American Company
Valve made a PC to play Steam games on. Console game emulation has been a thing on PC since the 90s. Valve doesn't facilitate it. They simply do nothing to prevent it.
Forte VFX1 preceded the virtual boy for half a year as the first commercially available headset. Sega also had a VR headset planned to be released in 1993 but never came out. If Sega was in a better place financially at that time, it could have preceded the VB by years.
The trick is to develop your fan project in secret, then release it all at once. Comply when Nintendo demands it, but it doesn't matter. It's already out there. AM2R and the Link's Awakening port are easy to find.
Honestly think Valve is worse in many ways both are greedy af but Valve just does nothing makes no games since 2013 and just collects money from Steam at least Nintendo makes quality experiences every year that I enjoy but their games aren't for everyone.
Hey man, great video had a good time watching it Also i just saw your sub count and im surprised it's this low, so I've subscribed, can't wait to see what content you will release next
Nintendo is completely against modding and hacks and fangames and Valve has to completely rely on them a lot of the time. They're like polar opposites yet both extremely influential
Ive ever only seen them go against fangames that are just blatant copies of their games though? Like the mario 64 pc port and links awakening pc port, pokemon uranium is an exception on that
@@CharmedReally7 They can take down the built game binaries as they contain art assets made by Nintendo. Nintendo cannot legally take down the reverse engineered source code for Super Mario 64.
@@shyguy85 yeah cuz technically hacks are changing the code of the game, which is owned by Nintendo. There is a lot you can blame Nintendo for but yall keep blaming them for doing a thing where they're obviously are in the right in for doing.
While both have been through the ropes I do enjoy them with the exception that one wishes not to fix their games when broken and one wishes to tear down games made by fans and other people are having fun with when there is nothing wrong with said actions
So recently there's an article that Valve send a DMCA strike to some of the fan creations, deep in my soul I knew Nintendo and Valve had a lot in common! However, just for the record, I still respect their developers and employees, but I will always despise their DMCA legal team. If Moon Channel feels like it. You can make a video about why valve is doing this just like how we made that video on why Nintendo is overprotective of its IP So that way we can know the information about the situation that valve is doing. Deep in my soul, I still have faith in both companies, but their DMCA legal team can be really frustrating and annoying!
Going from the NES to Valve's inception is quite the time jump that isnt obvious to someone who doesnt know the exact dates The world didnt just go from Mario brothers to Half Life over a weekend
The major difference between valve and nintendo is that valve opporates more freely about games since anyone can shift to any project they want and create any project they want While Nintendo's work's is more of a planned process where they find a beloved game by many (mostly mario) and then make a sequel to said game In conclusion:valve operates more freely, while nidtendo operates safely
Valve doesn't operate more freely, their employees have to work on what the senior employees "prefer" otherwise they risk getting fired for being "unproductive"
The biggest difference is that Nintendo actually makes games. Nintendo publishes a dozen plus games every single year, while Valve has published something like two dozen games in their entire existence. It’s a very different thing to keep your quality record sky high when you’re releasing games every month versus having the freedom to cancel game after game internally because you make billions of dollars distributing other people’s products.
valve got a good employee pay system, instead of hours its based off actual working, sounds like a great workspace being able to move around and work anywhere in the building 👍👍👍
nintendo is great but they are opressive. I wanted a switch but their continued focus on money over community has prevented me from engaging with them. Valve has actively uplifted their community with countless tools, as well as allowing leaked source code to be used unpunished (albeit with no support to the teams working with it). I also respect their management organization and its incredible to see horizontally organized companies doing well.
Realizing I could play all the Xenoblade games on my Steam Deck allowed me to finally just get rid of my Switch. I hope for a future where Nintendo pulls a Sega, drops out of hardware and just focuses on making games for other platforms, including PC. I would buy them all so fast, even though they're easy enough to emulate.
