So let them win the battle But don't let them restart That genocidal feeling That beats in every heart even more heartbreaking given what's happening in Gaza right now, but I'm still glad this exists.
@@scorpion3128is it? Was this a warning to Jersusalem and the jews to "dont let them restart the genocidal feeling that beats in every heart". I feel like he was saying that any nation is capable of committing genocide, including the one that was born out of a genocide.
I have been listening to Vampire Weekend a few years back especially when this album came out. It's quite surreal to witness that most of songs in the album were almost like "foretell" of what's going to happen the following years : from Trump, black lives matter, Covid-19 pandemic and now, surprisingly, the genocide that happened in Palestine. So many casualties; innocent children killed; collapses of hospitals; doctors pleaded for ceasefire at a press conference amongst the martyred bodies; innocent babies lost their legs; surgeries done without anesthesia; and recently, a devastated doctor was forced to amputate his own daughter's injured legs at home in the kitchen with militant tanks outside his home, without any anesthesia, nor proper surgery equipment; and lots of other unimaginable sufferings. What are their faults? Did they cause the Holocaust? Didn't they the people that helped you? How could a human heart endure to see these kind of things done to fellow human beings these modern days? How come the hate? I just wish all Jewish people agree to live in harmony and live rightfully. Why so ambitious. We are all just the same. Walking flesh and bones wishful of good endings. Peace.
I'M DONE, I'VE COMMENTED ALL THEIR NEW SONGS I know I loved you then I think I love you still But this prophecy of ours Has come back dressed to kill Three stones on a mountain Three small holes in a field You've given me the big dream But you can't make it real O, wicked world Just think what could have been Jerusalem, New York, Berlin All I do is lose, but baby All I want's to win Jerusalem, New York, Berlin A hundred years or more It feels like such a dream An endless conversation since 1917 Now the battery is too hot It's burning up in its tray Young marriages are melting And dying where they lay O, wicked world Just think what could have been Jerusalem, New York, Berlin All I do is lose but baby All I want's to win Jerusalem, New York, Berlin Our tongues will fall so still Our teeth will all decay A minute feels much longer With nothing left to say So let them win the battle But don't let them restart That genocidal feeling That beats in every heart O, wicked world Just think what could have been Jerusalem, New York, Berlin All I do is lose but baby All I want's to win Jerusalem, New York, Berlin
I did watch an interview with Ezra Koenig and he did say that a part of the reason there was such a gap between albums is because at one point he was struggling to make sense of what he really wanted in life and became quite depressed. Hit home.
This song is partly about the Palestine Israel conflict and the Balfour declaration. It’s so beautifully written and sang. I’d say as good as imagine by John Lennon.
¡REJOICE! The victory is won all you want to do is win, is your heart pure? Straighten up, the burden is light and the yoke is easy Don’t let anyone tell you, who you are; know that you are Created, we all are if we are successful is because we’ve been ever so allowed to, not because we don’t work for it, remember a living wage? Too political? Sorry it’s 1am and I’m high in the Sky super high Anyway, chin up? I know it sounds awesome All I wants to win Enjoy the sound Remember the truth🥳 The victory is ours The struggle is real Let’s stand united
It's like meta bridge from past to present, like short but endless eternity of human history stuck in 3 minutes. It's like planet Earth. Such post cosmopolitan song. I'm crying.
I just finished my 2nd full listen, and yeah... I'm loving what I'm hearing. This is a beautiful album, filled with nuances, originality and lyrics to dissect for the next years. This guys are like a miracle for this generation's ears. So much magic in just one hour. Please listen them with headphones and try not to smile with what you hear =) You're saving my winter, VW. Now, please come back to Chile hehe.
Sweet compelling folk tune. Light and lyrical, yet such heavy serious subject matter at the core. Luv to hear a new version by Bob Dylan, similar voice. Memorable ode. Thanks, Ezra and Vampire Weekend. Vive les folk pop and retro freaks...
I bought the album on the 10th because my dumbass thought it came out next month. I loved the album start to finish but this song especially. It's simplicity is beautiful, it gives me shivers every time I hear it and I personally don't think the album could have finished on a better note. Thank you for this beautiful album, hopefully I'll see you in Manchester 💖
This will nicely add to the list if you know what I mean: Angkor Wat Mechanicsburg Anchorage Dar Es Salaam L.A. San Francisco Oakland Alameda Berkely California Cape Cod Providence Phoenix Waverly Lincoln Santa Barbara New York
You forgot new mexico, Washington heights (a-punk) Manhattan (white sky) Hudson Bay, Babylon, Riverside(Hudson) New Jersey, Hyannisport, Wellfleet, Provincetown, (Walcott)
The most 'Modern Vampires'-vibe song of the album, and honestly the most painfully bittersweet too. (Also what do you guys think of the meaning of the song?)
3 cities important to Jewish identity: Jerusalem - root of Judaism, NY - location for diaspora Jews, Berlin - a remembrance of horrors of the holocaust.
I heard the extended live performance of this song at Austin city limits and it was incredible but it drives me crazy that it’s not available for purchase at all. I’m still holding out hope that they’ll relent and release the live version.
Why so many songs with Danielle Haim, but only a couple that actually say "ft. Danielle Haim"? 🤔🤔 Edit- I've figured it out by now, but the replies are still super helpful regardless 👌
I think it has something to do with the concept of an actual duet and simple background singing. Usually in a duet both have solo parts for which both are credited as featured artists.
I love poetry and all but have no intent on trying to understand what any of your songs are about, I’m just gonna or the words be. Anyhow I love this album.

Michael Milburn You’ve obviously never been, there’s plenty of Arabs in West Jerusalem too and no problems. Go and see for yourself before listening to media Bullshit.
@@TheIcarusEffect different projections cater for different considerations. The traditional map we see (Mercator's projection) is built so that distances are accurate between places, where as Peter's projection conserves area (sizes of continents) so while Mercator's projection is great for getting from A to B, it doesn't actually accurately represent the size of the continents. So spatially correct may have been a misleading way of saying "The continents look proportionally correct"
Sabelo Xulu but isn’t the problem that arises from the Mercator’s projection a result of trying to translate a curved surface onto a 2D plane (i.e, to capture the surface of the globe in a flat image one needs to adjust it somehow). Surely the issue doesn’t arise with 3D globes themselves?
Why was the video of their performance with Danielle Haim on Jimmy Fallon taken off from RU-vid? The coda was just outstanding. It's very sad not being able to find it anywhere...
Hadn’t heard this until I saw them live at Glastonbury 2019. They did an extended version with extra drums, guitars etc, it was euphoric. Absolutely great end to their set 🌍💞 The last 8 or so mins of this clip ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JheodnXy4vU.html
About the Balfour Declaration and how it didn't turn out the way it was supposed to. Also maybe a metaphor for how things that start with good intentions can become really complicated with time, which is also a theme from "We Got Married in a Gold Rush".
I just copied and pasted this lol but I think.... 3 cities important to Jewish identity: Jerusalem - root of Judaism, NY - location for diaspora Jews, Berlin - a remembrance of horrors of the holocaust. Ezra's jewish identity plays a huge role when writing lyrics. In Everlasting Arms he questions his faith: "Could I have been made to serve a master? Well, I’m never gonna understand, never understand". And in unbelievers also has religious themes.
I remember being in college in NYC when they first started getting buzz and I went to see them with my GF at the time at some dive in Brooklyn. Hearing Oxford Comma and Cape Cod that night for the first time made me instantly fall in love with them. It’s that feeling you get when you hear a band doing something nobody else is doing and it was so original and unique. Right after that they started getting the blog treatment and the secret was out. Although even to this day they seem to be an acquired taste in my circles. People either love their sound or they hate it. Which is odd because for me anyway, each album has been totally different than the last. Yet still maintains the signature sounds and melodies that make them so unique. Just like each album of theirs, I too have grown mature as well. So with this album I can hear how much they’ve matured and crafted their sound even further. Just like modern was completely different than contra, and contra completely different than their debut. Different, yet so distinctly them. Which is hard to explain but I feel like each album they’ve released coincided with a life event for me that made it fit perfectly into my life at each time. Maybe because I was in school the same exact time they were and I’m the same age so we’ve gotten old at the same times haha. If this was their sound when they first came out I actually don’t think I’d like it at all. But being a little older and wiser, just like their sound, I’m in love with this album. It doesn’t seem too long ago that I was holding a beer and a joint in college listening to the kids don’t stand a chance, and now I’m sitting here and rocking my own baby to sleep listening to the father of the bride. Thanks VW. Good memories 👍🏻
