VAN BROKE DOWN | stranded in boulder

This is my worst nightmare when I think about diving into full time van life. I'm looking at older vans too because that's what I can afford at the moment. I don't want to go into debt to have freedom. The newest I could afford is probably a 2005 Chevy Express. I'm looking at extended wheelbases and trying to find a taller roof top in local junkyards to put on it.

Those vans are known to have transmission issues. 1st to 2cd accumulator spring. And the torque convertor. I just dropped mine and replaced those and put a new pump in also.

You should always have $2000-$3000 as a back up in case off emergency broken down or something else.

I have a similar van “econoline e-250” and the seal blew out in my vans transmission. It is costly. They charged me around $800.00 bucks to replace the seal. They said it’s a costly repair because the size of the trans. Over all my van requires little maintenance even tho mines is a 1996 with 220,000 on the dash outside of rust and old gaskets needing replacement every so often it’s a good van. I think I will get over 300,000 miles out of it easily. Cool that they got yours back on the road with not too much inconvenience. 👍🏽👍🏽

I am in Las Vegas New Mexico and there are hot tubes from fresh hot mineral water with an historic castle as a back drop . Arm and Hammer World Collage with a meditation center made of prisms . Great area with lots of natural things to explore.

Transmission troubles are always expensive, even the cheapest ones. Pleased yours was affordable. And yes, had all ofthis happened in the middle of the Mojave, this inconvenience would have been a disaster. You were lucky. One way to mitigate painful events like this is to have the van periodically checked out for any mechanical doomsday issues that may be looming on the horizon. Nipping automotive stuff like this in the bud helps keep you from becoming a lonely figure stranded in the desert.

VanLife is exciting. I hope you have some contacts here in Colorado. I live near Golden. I'm now at my home and will be hitting the road again shortly. Do you have a portable power station? They can be charged by solar or the 12v outlet in your van. It's a really good idea to have one. I also saw your video where you spoke about your safety items. Bear spray is really good to have as well. I travel solo and have for years - I always make sure I have backup power and an emergency jump starter for my vehicle. If you are still in the Denver area then reach out to me if you wish. I can help ya with the power station if you do not have one. I have several. keep an eye on the transmission for leaks, ive seen front seals fail because the input shaft is loose , if thats the issue the seal will not last long

Could have been worse. You could have broken down in Boulder , Western Australia. That would have been an advenure!

You should let everyone know the name of the shop. They did good by you and treated you with total respect. If I'm traveling in Bolder and my Ford needs help that's where I would go. Only thing is I don't know the name of this Great shop.

I highly doubt it’s my transmission being that it was replaced and confirmed it was good during a full inspection a few months ago ..

I broke down in Beaver Utah, got me a i love beaver sticker so the locals would be mkre welcoming (it worked) people here in vegas (females) give me the dirtiests look...... wish people would travel more.... trading my van in next week for a new promaster, can’t afford to keep fixing her

If you get 160k miles out of a trans your doing good but dont expect it some engines last a little longer
