In this episode of Van Camping, we travel to a very remote area in North East Oregon. From the small town of Imnaha, Oregon, you follow twenty-four miles of steep, narrow dirt roads through an amazing country filled with wildlife and spectacular views. You eventually reach the Snake River, which divides Oregon from Idaho at a location referred to as Dug Bar. I spent two weeks at Dug Bar, Van Camping, catching smallmouth bass, and adventuring into the Hells Canyon wilderness. On this Van Camping adventure, we saw Deer, Elk, and Turkeys and enjoyed the antics of a bear feeding along the river's edge from the comfort of my camp chair and the shade of my awning. This area also has historical significance. This is where Chief Joseph led his people, the Nez Perce, across the snake river in 1877 when they were pushed out of their homelands in Oregon.

4 years ago I was on my Bicycle tour ride from Detroit area to where I live now in Utah, I made it 1500 because early snow stopped me, so I finished the trip by Amtrak and greyhound. Traveling the Plank road trail, back country dirt roads and the Nebraska cowboy trails along the Elkhorn River. Only been to a few places in Utah so far. I’m a retired truck driver traveling really simple these days like they did during the wagon train days. Slept along the pony express/ California/Oregon trail in southern Nebraska.

Dug Bar Ranch is now part of the Nez Perce National Historical Park, owned by the Forest Service but leased to McClaran Ranch. There are several outbuildings and a ranch house here: you can look but do not enter. "Dug" is a contraction of Thomas J. Douglass' surname. Douglass constructed a cabin here about 1880, but three years later his body was found where he had been ambushed and shot. Subsequent ranchers here were Leonard Johnson and then Doug Tippett. Both sheep and cattle were run here in the early days. Today, you'll see cattle and horses. Closer to the river are an outhouse, boat launch, and area where you can camp. A grass airstrip is used by visitors and cattle ranchers who go out to spot their herds. The Western Rim National Recreation Trail begins here, following Dug Creek up to the crest of Summit Ridge.

What a peaceful perfect place to hang out. Beautiful. Bet the river would have chilled the Pendleton nicely. Suggestion for hash browns, add lemon pepper and a splash of vinegar to kick it up a bit. Danner should sponsor you. Enjoyed the fishing commentary- have you done fishing specific videos? Great video ❤
