This video is about the design of my folding sofa bed of my van conversion. This folding sofa bed design can be used in any van sizes.
The video is oriented for a do it yourself (DIY) van conversion project, but can be used for any purpose: in a house, wood camp or whatever situations...
What you will find in this video is the concept of the design of this folding sofa bed. You will also get the tips how to do it yourself (DIY). The dimensions of your folding sofa bed are yours to define to fit your customized camper van.

Eric, thank you for your videos! Your simple and functional build is having a big influence on planning my own build. Thanks so much for sharing! This bed design is so elegant. Love it. Here are a few video requests, ranked by importance (to me at least): 1) Sink/Water System: How to set up electric pump & water tanks 2) Table: Design of telescoping leg and 3 rails. Where to purchase similar leg. 3) Mattress cushions design 4) Solar: Which panel/battery/inverter did you choose, and why? Where is battery stored? Please detail wiring solar panel through rear door. 👍You have made the best instructional video on the bed construction I have seen. I love the fact that you went to the trouble to make the paper mock-ups to illustrate how the design works and how to calculate the dimensions. So many other RU-vidrs lack the insight to realize some things just don't show up as well in the real world as they do through a diagram. I'm looking forward to your electrical set-up and hope you will go into the same level of detail on the connections. I'm having a hard time understanding how to calculate the size of the battery, what needs an inverter, and how to run the wiring efficiently. Thanks for creating such a great video. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Eric enjoys Earth Hey Eric! I am going to start by taping an outline on the floor to see where I want to place stuff. I thought it would give me a good starting point for movement and access in the van. I would like access to leave through the back as well so may go with a single bed size. I am 5 ft 3 so think I will consider a shorter bed with extension options. I am considering a drawer system for a kitchen to come out the back from the shelving unit. Thank you for replying! I love the way you made up your bed !! Just throw the covers in the garage.....they'll be there until you open the hatch. 😄🤗 Your instructions are very clear. Excellent video. I really appreciate how you planned out your build, especially not drilling into the interior of the van. This is a great way to get your toes wet and see if van life is for you without spending $$$ money on a RV or custom van build.

You can certainly do this! A very good diy design.. it's clever and it works. That being said, I prefer the more compact VW rock n roll system which unfortunately you need to buy! And while I'm taking parts from a trashed VW, I wouldn't mind grafting on the whole sliding roof assembly from a 21 window microbus. 😊

@@ericenjoysearth2756 Hmmm, After the cushions, I would guess electronics! Now you keep your solar battery and the minivan battery separated. Have you considered one of the selecta switch and wire both batteries to it so if you are out and about and the sun isn't cooperating, the alternator could charge both batteries. Might have to drill a hole if you can't find a spot to pass the wires through the firewall.

Wow Thank you. on the 2x4 side studs I’m going to paint chalk paint clear wax by Annie Sloan, which will help it slide easily with out shavings or damage to the wood after sliding over and over again. Great video 💕

love this bed design, it really is the way to go with the space of a minivan looking into a way of making the front part that sticks out a sliding system though so when in sofa mode it disappears

This design is effectively awesome! You never have to remove your sheets or bed-cover! It is certainly the faster way to do and undo your! For the bed structure, I find a good use for it: I attach drinking water bottles to it. You can see this in some videos. No lost places. That bed structure is required to support the hinges. If you plan to sleep two it is a must, even for one person. Also covering them by making the bed longer will make you lose inside space.... Really it is not a problem ✌️

I didn’t remove it because of some situation that you may need a third person on board. Ex.: when you do a river run and a third person need to bring the van down the river... If you don’t have that kind of application, yes you can get more space by removing it. Thank you for your comment Murph! 👍

Bro, just want to thank you for this post. I took your piano hinge technique and modified it to my needs. Biggest changes worth mention is that 1. I used casters to help slide the platform up to bench position. 2. Didn’t bolt it down so that the rear so it can slide forward and turn into a “lounger” 3. Will use the “baby mats for playing” as the cushion since i prefer and harder more dense bed. And won’t need to cover them, just need to wipe clean. 4. Didn’t use any brackets, simple joining techniques like half lap joint, screws and glue is more than strong enough to make it super sturdy.

This is the most practical bed I have ever seen. I will build exactly like this one except it is narrower so I can slide my board under and some room left for my bike. I wish you could give the dimension of the other 2 boards that you lean on. Many thanks. I've been searching for so long.

Hi Eric! In the front portion of your bed frame, you have the two "arms" that stick out to provide support for the bed platform. Did you consider putting those arms on hinges so that they can fold inward while in couch mode? Since they do not have the legs on them, it seems like a frame-side latch could hold them while in bed mode -- and in bed mode, they are flush with the frame itself so they get support that way. I am asking mainly to see if you tried it and found it not to work. I know English is not your first language, and I know I do not always explain myself clearly, so let me know if I need to clarify. Thanks for making these; I love your explanations! (I live in central Florida)

I would not do this to avoid rattles… In some of my videos you can see that I tie drinking water containers to that piece of structure. I also use it to climb inside and outside of the van. It is really not a problem for me. I would not complicate… Thank you for your appreciation ✌️😃

Hey Eric! My husband and I just found your videos last night, we love them! We just inherited a van from my uncle and are just beginning our process of converting it. I was wondering if you had a sort of "shopping list" of all the materials required to make this. My husband wasn’t into “VanLife” until I showed him your design! We have a Grand Caravan and I took measurements and am so excited! California has locked down again so I’m trying to put my order together so I don’t have to make multiple trips to the store. I love your ideas and your videos! What type of wood did you use? I found nontoxic plywood but the wood is tuff to pick. Please help, the options are overwhelming. Thank you again for such ingenuity!

Good news Michelle! Also, Grand Caravan is a great van to built yourself a converted van! I used select plywood. I didn’t apply any varnish or peint on it exactly for the same preoccupations that you have. When it is warm, I still can smell the wood! I really would not liked to be stuck with a chemical smell... I will have to dig in my receipts to find the exact type of tree... It is called Select plywood because of the quality of the finish. I choose more the finish then the type of tree...

@@ericenjoysearth2756 I wasn’t sure if I should use kiln dried or green. I found that Douglas Fir is available here and untreated. Just nit sure if I should pay more for kiln dried or just go with green (which still has some moisture in the wood)

Since you sleep in your van, I would use the more natural wood possible. For this reason, I did not put any varnish or any other products to treat the wood.✌️

Awesome Bed Design, Eric! I love how you narrate your videos, you really do a great job of expressing your thoughts and explaining your how to videos. So it looks like your mini van has the stowable seats, so you did not have to remove any seats or you did one of them? I think you did say you had removed a seat. That really is a genius bed design and movable couch set up. Love it!

Really enjoy all your videos- quick question about the bed frame - it looks like you kept the smaller 3rd row seat installed rather than take it out? Any reason for this? Hello Michelle! I kept 1/3 of the last row of seats. I kept it for when I need a third person in the van. I just remove the bed and have access to it. It is useful when you do a river run. Someone may pick you up! If you do not have this need, you may remove it. Explaining the storage spaces is a good video suggestion! Thank you ✌️

I didn’t designed with four identical panel. Now, if I would do it again, I would try that to be able to interchange the cushion to compensate the wear and tear. So far everything is fine, but still it could make a better design! Thank you for your comment Mr T. ✌️

Could you share the size of all your separate cushions please? I'm in planning stage for a Sienna. Also is it hard to see out the back window when driving? Or do you put it in relax mode to lower height of that back rest cushion height for better view while driving?
