Van Der Valk Final Opening - 1992 

Huge balls up by someone at ITV not using this great theme tune in the new series.The new Van Der Valk opens with something that sounds like a funeral march.Someone should be hauled over the coals on this one.

Very original format, way ahead of it`s time and a refreshing change from thos e `all action` American shows. No one in the Netherlands who I have spokn to knows anything about it !! Great series, and as for the Dutch - great people

I just discovered Matt Monro did this song and it's on youtube if you do a search. It's called "And you smiled". Amazing tune! Amazing Matt Monro ! Heaven in three minutes.

Just a word of advice from an englishman who had never seen electric trams before , they are almost silent , & come at you from the "other" side , (we drive on the left , so look for oncoming traffic from the right ! they drive vice - versa. ) these facts led directly to a slightly more mature man than myself , on the same club visit , saving my life by yanking me back by literally the scruff of my neck out the way of a fast oncoming tram that I hadn,t seen or heard , one night in Ostend , Belgium , it was karma , because I had just refused to leave him behind to fend for himself in a " lively " bar in the middle of Ostend , when the rest of the lads wanted to move on . ( roughly 40 of us , combine factory works visit ). And for the guy below , yes , I agree , the theme managers have missed a good memory of the original Van Der Valk by leaving out the original "Eye Level" in some form , even if abridged , but there are musical "whiffs" of it if you listen in the current program . I,m a lifelong Mike Oldfield fan , & Eye Level is still one of the finest pieces of music written , trying to capture the public perception of what Amsterdam might feel like at that time . I suppose time moves on , but they could have honoured it more .

This IS from 1992. The first two seasons of "Van Der Valk" was shot in 16mm outside, and videotape inside. The 3rd season of the show was all-film. The final seasons was shot on 1-inch videotape and digital videotape and both seasons were shot on location in 35mm film.

I loved Van Der Valk when I was younger I refused to go and play with my friends until it was finished, I was the best show ever.

1992 was the line in the sand, telly and music died and were buried before 1995. Nothing but a small handful of programs worldwide are worth watching it is all shite these days. The best has been made and that is sad. No commercial entity comes close. Itv is average at best. The bbc is below average as are all us tv networks. Only glimmer of light is some hbo productions. What a dire state the telly is in.

Samsung was originally played by the Nigel Stock, sadly Ronald Hines who later played that had also sadly died along with its star, Barry Foster RIP.

Interesting to note when the 1990's series was released on DVD, each episode was prefixed with the 1969 colour skyline ident, when that had already been discontinued a couple of years prior to transmission!

I Just bought the whole 11 disc DVD box set series of this, as just watched another favorite of mine "Puppet on a Chain". having lived 50 miles From Dover most of my life, My visits to Holland and France and Belgium were quite often, as only needed a visitors passport that cost around £1.00 valid for 1 year in the 1970's. Looking forward to a couple of Dutch royal cigars in the evenings and a glass of wine, Cheers Commisar Valk!! :)

Wanted to let all u Eye Level fans hear this iconic theme tune cos u won't in the revamp Sunday.!! What a let down cannot believe they ditched it.An insult to the late Barry Foster and his team😟😟

1-inch tape was a kind of composite analogue videotape on large reels which was completely obsolete as a production format by the nineties. I didn't think 1990s Van Der Valk used any video transfer in its post production process until the broadcast master was made. Fades were all opticals and all credits were done on film and not on an Aston, except the episode title, which I seem to remember being a superimposed video effect. I am an editor and also liked Van Der Valk!

Perhaps they should bring this in for the new series due to film in September 2020.

Aside from the series itself of course, this-alas-was the last Thames Television on ITV Network ident as you say here before alas Carlton took over in 1993 and it became the ITV and nasty mess really that it is today, which is a shame of course. Thank you anyway!!

1 inch tape? This is from 1992 not 1972. The original series was shot like this. I think this later series was shot entirely on location in Amsterdam, probably on 16mm like Inspector Morse.

Was there ever a recording made of this arrangment of Eye Level/Van der Valk?

Nothing much on TV now no more than crap television. Now I remember the 70s and 80s and 90s they were much better than the xfactor, bake off, Keith Lemon and nothing but reality TV we have now. As for Keith Lemon as my late Mum used to say I wouldnt pay him in washers and to think they took Benny Hill off the telly because he was sexist, now he had talent he was funny.

Now network dvd gone bust. So no more classic dvds.
