I love night cafe. I don't think it's ugly the way we're taught in school, I think it's ugly in the way it feels. It's an ugly atmosphere, but a beautiful painting of that ugliness. If that makes sense.
@tuanjim799
@tuanjim799 4 года назад
Yeah, it's not at all ugly in a "eeew, that's a shitty painting" way. It's just depicting something dark. it's beautiful in the same way that a Dostoevsky novel is beautiful, even when it's depicting some of the harshest, ugliest aspects of human experience.

This night café reminds me of the cafés I went to alone or with my friends when I was a student. I actually find it almost comforting. I remember the heat, the drunk old guys, the loneliness, the beer smell. It sounds sad but I don't know why... I liked these moments and I still do like remembering them. I felt real darkness there some days, real friendship other days. It inspired me to put real raw emotions into my music and drawing.
@eleSDSU
@eleSDSU 5 лет назад
I find it cozy, it remi ds me of the cafes I went to to play billiards, they had old men hunched and a backroom where people played dominoes, the one I went most times actually had green and red walls and that yellowy lighting only interrupted by the colder light avove the billiard table. Nostalgia can make anything beautiful and expressed by a master like van Gogh makes its job easier.

This is a realistic example of what a social bustling setting looks like when you look at it from sober eyes (even tho VG was probably not sober) looking at something from the distance of loneliness and mental illness. He may have been depicting the setting itself objectively, but it feels more like he is depicting through his on eyes which are tinged with this deep separation from the people around him even though he was right next to them. Maybe that’s why it feels and looks ugly. He felt connected in nature, so there is a love attached to it, there is a sense of oneness. When he is inside, it’s almost like it was synthetic to him, like walking into the matrix. It’s sad but honestly weirdly relatable. One of my favorite songs is the Nirvana song “Dumb” - when you’re mentally ill you can either pretend to fit in in settings like this, or you can see the truth of the experience which is lonely and sad.

I kind of like it. The colors are nice and the large shadow is intriguing big and silent. The focus, the man is off centered and facelessly staring at you, like he’s greeting/acknowledging you. And there’s pink flowers in the back. A very calm and quiet painting.

This is my favourite Van Gogh. I’ve been fortunate enough to see it “in the flesh” twice. It stopped me in my track, I felt I could hear him urging me “look, look! “. I read that he once wrote that if he painted a tree, he didn’t want people to see a tree, he wanted them to feel it. I certainly feel him in this painting. I could write a page about what I get out of it.

Van Gogh was a childhood idol of mine. I loved his work from the first time I saw it, and reproduced a select number of works in aquarel when I was 11. It was only when I reached adult phase though that then significance and uniqueness of his works really dawned on me, especially the contrasting colors and the oftentimes strange perspectives. The story of the man was a sad one however, and I wish he would have got the recognition he deserves, which unfotunarely only was reached post mortem. There are few artist who compare to his unique style, but I for one loved his breakaway from traditional art contemporaries and the way he, stubbornly believed in his own work. He was determined, devoted, and had a very peculiar relationship with nature, space and shapes. His work keeps on inspiring me. Great video!

Has anyone compared this painting to the "Liminal Spaces" effect. Cus this painting feels a bit liminal. "The Cafe Terrace at night" and "Night Cafe" are honestly my two favorite paintings from Van Gogh, I know everyone is always talking about "Starry Night" or his "Sunflowers" painting but these two are my favorite and I'm really not sure why too. Night Cafe for me is like in the same vain of why I like Hopper's Nighthawks. There's just something about those paintings that I can't explain the feeling but they make me feel in the moment if that makes sense.

The greens are the ones that give the sulfur yellows a sickly feel to the atmosphere. The reds suffer some desaturation, like being drained of life and they keep the yellows earthbound towards the lower register of the painting. Yellows almost want to rise for it is in the nature of yellow to chaotically expand its energy but here they become very tense due to the opposing and oppressing red. That's what may give a feeling of entrapment, almost to the point of asphyxiation.

This is a perfect example of art being the only true freedom we have. Freedom to create it and the freedom to interpret. I somehow knew this piece was a complicated one, which brings curiosity. The scene does show a bit of depression and a bit complacency, but is also relaxing. What gives it a different perspective is if you visit the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibits. Highly recommend it.

With the use of yellow you would also expect the counters to use purple tones if he was using complementary colours, but instead you get these radioactive greens and blues. But then the dado rail is more orangey (strengthens the blue). Still, comes across as otherworldly. Good analysis.

I think Van Gogh was painting a picture of his own personal hell. These’s no escape from this cafe. It is scary to even contemplate walking into. It’s like the mouth of some huge beast yawning open - not a perty picture, lol. I believe he painted it to exorcize his fear of “losing his mind” - but it backfired by showing him his impending ruin too clearly. I bet he hid it from his own view.

When you create a juxtaposition between the two paintings like that, it's like you are creating a distinction between the tumultouous inner works of the mind versus the reality of the world outside of it. Almost to say that maybe the interior painting is Van Gogh's mind and the outside paintings are where he finds escapism in the real world.

This painting is brilliantly used by Patton Oswalt in his book “Silver Screen Fiend.” He uses the term “Night Cafe” to describe places you enter and come out of forever changed, given that this painting marked a change in Van Gogh’s artistry for the rest of his life. Van's outside of cafe : feel good Van's inside of cafe : booooring What he needed wasn't just encouragement, he might have needed someone's sincere recognition'periodically'. Among those who paint a picture, those who are skilled and attract attention are praised by tens of thousands of followers even in the past or today, but for those who don't know how to do that, such a world is still a bitter and boring world. At least he didn't stop drawing because he had the ability he knew himself.

when you know exactly how a painting makes you feel, it's too "perfect" to be a masterpiece. That unknown unsettlement is what's captivating about the bar with character rather than the "good night with friends under the stars" ... never would have known this painting is considered an "ugly masterpiece"

It's funny how he romanticises other paintings and makes the 'ugly' one feel horrible. I think that threw me off in convincing me it was ugly

This is an incredible analysis!! beautiful video, too. its the painting Tenesee Williams references in the stage directions of the poker night scene of his play A Streetcar Named Desireand this has made the whole scene so much more poignant! I love this so much

Watching this reminds me how excited I am about the game "Dreams". Artists have already done amazing things with it.
