How you reacted is how all the guitarists reacted when they first heard him play - it was incredible!!! There will never be another one like him. What is just amazing is that everyone of Van Halen's song is a BANGER!! It is so weird! Greatest Guitarist - Greatest Front Man - Best Back Ground singing - on and on..... You have to check out their first album - it changed the Rock World forever!!! Never again but at least we were on the Earth enjoy him and his band - The Mighty VAN HALEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LISTEN TO THAT FIRST ALBUM - YOU BETTER BE SITTING OR LAYING DOWN SISTER!
@Johnny Bickle, you too huh? Ever since watching my first reaction video to Eddie's Eruption, I've been inundated with reactions to it. Thus far, @Gracie and only one other had the perfect reaction to this. It made my day. Thanks for posting this and Gracie, thanks for the pure, unfiltered reaction. Eddie has always touched the soul with his music
I knew you had beautiful eyes when your video started, but when you saw the force of nature Eddie was, they were big and even more beautiful. Eddie was self-trained, and played piano and drums as well. He was also loaded on alcohol when he did that magic in Eruption. Sadly, we lost him to cancer 2 years ago at the age of 65. His son Wolfgang Van Halen is an incredible guitar player himself, if you shut your eyes when you listen to him you would swear it was Eddie all the way.
The intro is 316, a song about his son being born on March 16th. The rest is Eruption, but greatly extended because, well, that's what live shows do lol.
@@bucknaked31 You're right, but it wasn't put on an album until '91 and named for his son's birth date. In any case, it wasn't part of the original Eruption.
Eddie did things on guitar that no had ever done before. Others picked up on it and did similar stuff later, but they didn't have the same feel or sound. And he never did the Eruption/Cathedral/Mean Street solo the same way twice. RIP Eddie.
Don't forget SPANISH FLY after the Mean Street section. Also, a well deserved shout out to Alex on drums because those crash cymbal crescendos at the beginning and ending just make it feel so much more EPIC, just like on the studio version.
after listening to this since 1978, its great to see you younger people getting just as moved by Eddie as we did 45 years ago, @Mike S - good memories dude... RIP
If you want to see more classic rock guitar vitrtuosity i recommend two songs by Deep Purple a. Smoke on the Water b. my Woman from Tokyo. Watch the live versiond from the early 70s. Fyi I am a 62 year old hobbyist guitarist semi retired attorney. I have lots of knowledge about great music from my lifetime. Just let me know what you're interested in and ill be happy to steer you in the right direction. It doesn't even have to be rock and roll. I know about many different genres....o would be happy to pour out my knowledge to you
This was the Live without a Net show, filmed in New Haven, Connecticut. This solo is an amalgam of several solos and improv. That man was a god. He was not "vaping", that's called a cigarette.
@@peterclyon 3:16 as a complete song was released on the "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" album, you'r correct. But this WAS played during the solo for this concert. it's kind of like 'Dee' by Randy Rhoads. Part of it showed up in an earlier live performance, in a different track. It wasn't released as a title until the Tribue album after his death. Dee was never actually finished, but bits of it got sprinkled in as part of the creative process. Believe me, when I watched Live Without a Net on tape back in the day (it's the only VH concert I ever watched), I had rented it after F.U.C.K. was released, I thought it was odd. So, cheers, right back at you.
You have to remember that Eddie was self taught and had never taken a guitar lesson in his life and after building his first guitar he became the greatest guitarist that has ever lived and not long after this performance GUITAR WORLD MAGAZINE gave him the title of THE GUITAR GOD. And remember at this concert he was totally smashed drunk and had no memory of playing the concert ever. Eddie did more for young people wanting to play the guitar than any other guitarist that has ever lived. For us that grew up listening for his playing our world got extremely dark and we felt a huge loss when he passed away. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen again. Our hearts were broken the day that the world lost the GUITAR GOD!!!
very likely Kevin, this was EVH's most sober gig(s) on that tour.. for he knew the two nights (sold out nights,-august of '86) in New Haven were being recorded for the "Live without a net" concert video..
I love your reaction. The first time I watched this it blew my mind. I was crying and had goosebumps, and seeing your reaction I couldn't help feeling those same emotions and I was crying with you. I don't believe there will be another as great as Eddie Van Halen. He is greatly missed. Rip.
I was a senior in high school when this was released and this song was unlike anything we had ever heard before. Just blew our minds. It was a great time to be a teenager cruising around town with the windows down blasting Van Halen.🤯 Thanks Gracie for your reaction to it. I'm sure we had the same expressions on our faces the 1st time we heard this 😳
I’m blown away every time I listen to this…..RIP Eddie!! I just found your channel and subbed!! I look forward to watching all ur vids! Eddie tried to mimic every instrument he could with only his guitar!
Great reaction 👏. I won't even sugarcoat it, you just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived! He had fun when he played, he didn't invent tapping but he mastered it. And come on, he made the guitar sound like a violin or a cello. RIP Eddie. They'll never be another.
Watching the pure wonderment & joy on your face as you watched his enjoyment, as he shreds for the audience (like a kid who eagerly wants to show mommy and daddy all the different things he taught himself to do) made my day (actually night 😉.) Thx. Cheers, 😎
I first saw Van Halen in Granada Hills in 1976 when I was 13, at a huge backyard keg party.. and 10+ times after that before they were famous...my older brother worked security all over the Sunset strip , (snuck me into alot of shows including Quiet Riot With RR}........... saw every tour with DLR . I was 13 when I first saw Edward Van Halen and was mezmerized...I began playing guitar because of what I saw and heard, just like TENS OF MILLIONS of other guitarists at the time. I had a career in music because I saw Edward Van Halen when I was a kid.
Yeah Mr Eddie Van Halen was one of the best of the best guitarists ever, a virtual rock god. He played the guitar not just as it was intended but like it was a tricked out piano. He is sorely missed, may he RIP. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I was a junior in high school in 1978 and it changed every rockers perspective on guitar he was nothing less then then a guitar God. My favorite band for 42 years. we lost an innovator.
this is definition of first time hearing i think real speechless and tears do not think they were fake going to introduce this to some 19 years olds i work with pretty sure they never seen it lol
The fact that it brought a tear to eyes proves that, as one of my cousins described, you have an artistic appreciation for music. If you enjoyed Eddie's playing then I highly recommend explore Van Halen's whole catalog of music. They got a lot of good music to hear.
Think of the guitar as part of Eddie, or was it Eddie was part of the guitar, he built many of his own and played piano from a young age but couldn't read music. He played like the guitar neck was a piano keyboard and he spent hours playing around seeing what sounds he could get from them
Not to mention that Eddie was so inebriated during this particular concert, he said he didn't remember the show in an interview about the live video. Eddie was incredibly shy and had social anxiety off stage, so he used alcohol to help calm his nerves. That makes this performance even more breathtaking! He was today's Mozart. RIP King Edward
Not only could Eddie Van Halen play a lot of crazy notes, his sense of artistry and musicality and beauty was brilliant. Not only all that, but his expressions of joy while he was doing it was infectious. Your reaction was perfect! The dude who introduced him at the beginning was Sammy Hagar, Van Halen's lead vocalist at the time of this concert.
Now watch a full song .i recommend Van Halen-Unchained. I love that great music moves you to tears.that is the power of great art in any medium .Another thing that I love about you is that based on the sound of your voice im pretty sure that you are Haitian 😚p.s. since you are crazy about guitar music you should react to another guitar virtuoso-jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child or Hey Joe or Purple Haze
Wow! Watching you react to this sure takes me back. In 1978 I was a sophomore in HS. When VH hit the airwaves, everyone I knew who were die hard rock fans were left just as speechless and amazed. Nobody could understand how he was playing, including my friends who knew how to play guitar. People became fixated and obsessed by the sounds he produced and the speed he produced them. I had the honor of getting to see him close up at 3 different shows, and my mouth was hanging open the whole time. Lol, as a kid in those days if you hadn't seen Van Halen, you hadn't lived. I've never played any kind of instrument so my understanding was zero, and the word amazed just somehow didn't begin to describe how I felt listening. The music world changed. Even the way it was written had to change. They had to incorporate something called "tabs" in music writing so people could "try" to understand how to play the way he did. I'm sure others in here can explain this so much better, but it's what I do know from listening to tons of interviews he did. He was actually trained as a classical pianist as a kid but...he couldn't read music! True fact! He had an incredible ear, and that's how he began. He even described how his piano teacher would play something, and ask him to repeat it. He could flawlessly do it. There's so much about him out there, and it's all incredible. The day he passed I teared up like I lost a friend. Had a hard time listening to him without getting emotional for weeks. He's a music world icon and as kids he was our hero. Great reaction Gracie! Good to see you having the same look of amazement we all have had.
Well I do know the man was every bit as creative as EVH, perhaps even more when you consider many of the effects he used that many try to copy were done without any extra equipment like wammy bars and pedals and such, which only serves to make his playing that much more intriguing. Many of the greats like Clapton, Page, Santana and others struggled to do what he did in a way that complimented their playing. VH had the curiosity and engineering skills to build his own equipment, to his own specifications and expectations, by altering existing components and scabbing together parts of different guitars to achieve his own signature sound. In that respect I think (imo) that he could probably duplicate a recording more closely than Jimi could only because he was utilizing components that were designed to make and replicate sounds more closely and consistantly, where Jimi was limited to his own creativity without all the extras which is impressive as hell. Using a right handed guitar and restringing it for left handed playing changed the tones of the strings right off the start. How he figured out the rest on his own is a mystery because there weren't many if any other guitarists who could help him, or that would try what he did if they didn't think they could incorporate it into their music. Thats about as close of an honest opinion I can give. Not being a musician myself, I find it difficult to critique anybody who can do what I cant. Im just a fan but thanks for asking 😉🎸
