Eddie wrote this tune in a closet while on tour humming the notes into a tape recorder so he would wake up Valerie. There is no way this dude is forgetting how to play it.
You can tell Eddie practiced his ass off for this tour. It really shows here. A few years ago he would have struggled with these songs. Nice to see him clean and sober.
Like wise Monster's Of Rock 1988 first time Arrowhead Stadium Kansas City, Scorpions, Dokken, Metallica, Kingdom Come. Plus four more times KICK ASS Always
EVH is the greatest rock guitarist of all time. He's back! He sounds as great as he ever has! I could fucking cry! (happy tears, of course) Thanks for posting, dude!
Just looking through VH videos and see your reply. I’m an EVH fanatic of course as well as guitar player/gear collector. You are an amazing guitar player too! I’ve seen a bunch of your gear videos. The Bogner stuff...think it was the Helios video. Phenomenal stuff, Doug! But yes....I agree with you that EVH is the GOAT.
Anyone who complains that they need Michael Anthony back is missing the point. I love Mikey but Wolfie is a very formidable base player. And yeah he can't sign back ups like Mikey but the new album and subsequent tour never would have happened without Wolfie. He is one of the few things still driving Eddie.
As a fan of 30 years, I'm more excited about this tour than the last one because Ed sounds much better for sure. It's funny to hear people complain about Wolfie... yeah, sure he's not Mike (I do miss Mike's under-recognized backup vox), but he sounds (and looks) much more confident now then he did last tour - he's grown up. From the looks of him, he'd probably kick most of his naysayer's asses haha.
I watch this video regularly. Now it has a different feel to it. What an amazing guitar player Eddie was. Big fan of him since I was a kid. Hard to believe he’s not with us. He will be missed, but his music and performances will live. \m/\m/ RIP
This tour and this song represents the return of Eddie's playing after the wrist bone spur surgery and another try at sober living for a while. He hadn't played this well since 1986.
Wolfie is actually a very good bassist. Then again, his last name is Van Halen. He covers the old Michael Anthony background vocals exceptionally well also.
I saw Van Halen back in the early 80s when I was in high school, on both the Fair Warning and then the Diver Down tours. They were amazing back in the 70's and 80's with DLR. I never went to see them when David Lee Roth came back to the band in the 2000's. I prefer to have that memory of them in their youth frozen in my mind forever....
Eddie was such an amazing musician. Most of us are already blown away by what he did. I hate to bring this up, but imagine what he could have done if he never touched alcohol? That said, I understand that alcohol might be the reason we even know about him, because he drank to deal with his anxiety and to overcome his inhibitions. I’ve read him saying that alcohol might have given him that boost to play some of the crazy stuff an otherwise conventionally-educated guitarist would have never attempted. I guess it was the elephant that was fated to live in the room with him. We’re lucky to have witnessed him. RIP EVH
well this was back in February - by March he'd given up the headset mic and went back to a handheld mic and his stage performance got much better. The headset mic was an idea that just didn't work - and luckily Dave realized it. Once he got the handheld mic back all the stage moves returned and the shows got better.
This is Old School Van Halen. Diamond rocks at the mic does his schtick. Does kicks, Eddie kicks ass! Al is on fire. I also have to say that Wolfy sounds just like Mike. His voice is great!, If I listened to this without seeing Wolf, I would think it was Mike.
Lol, pretty cool how Ed still remembers that solo so well after nearly 30 years. He nailed it with ease. His playing may of never evolved past 1985, but he still has his chops. Poor Roth, he looks and moves like my friend's little old Jewish uncle at this point. Hard rock is usually a young man's game; it must be hard to try to pull this off every night on a 55+ yr old body that's seen a lot or wear and tear.
Really? I mean, unless your friend's little old Jewish uncle can jump into the air and extend his leg over his head, I don't see what your talking about.
To me, it seems like these guys appreciate each other more, and realize what they accomplished back in the day, and how much it means to us, their fans.........
@grantfisher Thanks. I also got Hot For Teacher and China Town. Some of it is pretty blurry since I had to max out the zoom and have no manual control of settings on this camera.
YES YES YES YES YES OMG one of if not the most rocked out song ever from the GREATEST ROCK DISC EVER MADE 1984. Would love to see them add House Of Pain to the set and keep them both in the rest of the tour. NICE
..one other thing, with all of his goofy moves, Dave looks like some crazy dude you would see on a street corner, trippin' on something hahaha. And the hair - yeah, it's time to shave that. Oh well, it's still great to see him with the band again and having fun. =VH= is still my fave band after
@AetroyayorteA hey guy I've seen Dave several times and he headlined a festival date shortly after the tour w/Hagar and I almost did'nt believe it but he actually came out and sang most of the VH material note for note and really put on a great performance that had us going "wow I cant believe he is able to do that"
That's funny because the new album has bass playing that blow's Mike Anthony's playing away. Mike's playing in Chickenfoot is a lot better than it was on 1984 and every VH album that followed but compared to what Wolf layed down on the new album it's not nearly as good. The Whole Truth has one amazing song after another where as Chickenfoot is half filler and half killer. Wolf plays bass like he owns it and his songwriting/arrangement skills are badass. He saved VH!
It's the headset mic! Watch the later shows and see, with a handheld he's suddenly so much more in control... of those weird things his hands do when he doesn't have it...
This may may be a hot take, but I think Wolfgang is far better at guitar than on bass. I don't want to say he was born to play guitar, but he was born to play guitar!! Haha. I can tell he wants to do more but then he remembers wait, I'm on bass, I gotta dial it back a bit. I know he can shred some scales all over this song and to me it's the hardest van halen song to learn because of the timing and wild structure. It's very easy to mess up or get lost on this song. You gotta be tight. And they was tight. I can't wait to hear some new Mammoth. Wolf is so damn talented. R.I.P EVH 🙏 ☝️ remember to keep playing, or he's coming after you ❤
>>>Bass player must be using oil of olay he looks so young again Keep it up Mike you look mahvalis. That's NOT Michael Anthony! Man, what the Hell are YOU smokin'?! That's Wolfgang Van Halen...Eddie and Valerie Bertinelli's son. Shaking my head in stunned disbelief.............
Great song, great that they are doing it live again. Sounded good to me but does miss Mikes vocals. Big time. Like a lot of their other material. But like a good cake without the icing I'll still eat it.
I'll disagree with you on one part. Steven Tyler somehow or another has maintained his vocals over the years. but very few can. What's important here is Eddie is playing his ass off and they sound great live. I've got May 22nd tickets in Kansas City. Can't wait!!!
not bad for a guy who suffered a heart attack during the 2007-2008 tour your in my prayers dave GOD in heaven make dave STRONG so he can blow everyone away!!!! AMEN again! let's show dave some love people thx :(
Actually, I just saw Robert Plant a few months ago and the Stones less than a year ago and the both KILLED. I'm a HUGE DLR fan and I'm glad he is with VH and is making new music, but I wouldn't recommend using Jagger or Plant as bad examples of front men at any time. Especially comparing them to DLR in this video...
@rockinblackchick To see Roth doing Zumba or whatever you call his stage performance now, while wearing a headset (something only pop stars like Madonna and Justin Bieber do) and mushmouthing (i.e. singing w/o any passion whatsoever) and changing lyrics to classic songs like GGB (my fav VH tune of all)... that I don't need to see, and certainly not pay to see. VH was always a killer band live. Now they're just a product of the studio :(
Ah, but is he not merely playing the fool, Jonny Strouch? I put to you this: "Wisdom ceases to be wisdom when it becomes too proud to weep, too grave to laugh, and too selfish to seek other than itself." Double D, Diamond David Lee doesn't give a fuck, he's prepared to laugh at himself and put it on the line, always has done, I respect that. Still at points I'm like "Aaah, my eyes!!" but he's always done that too! Haha!
@AetroyayorteA i like when people say dave can't sing anymore he couldn't sing from the start lol dave has never sang all the lyrics it's about the vibe
DLR sounds ok - bit rough around the edges, but he's working his arse off on this tour, and he's given us a great album alongside the VH clan, so who cares if he fucks up?
Wow, I don't know what he's singing , but it sure ain't the lyrics to Girl Gone Bad. Roth continues to "Romper Room" the lyrics to some of their old songs. What a shame.
