Hi Nathan! There are some bass players who would ding you for using just one finger on that repeating note. They'd say it's not efficient and you should be alternating with two fingers, even if one finger simply sounds more consistent in situations like that. And if using two fingers on one repeated note doesn't sound consistent then just practice until it does, instead of using one finger. Obviously on something like Dean Town, you'd have to use two fingers because one finger can't play that fast. But in this case, I don't see why you can't use one finger if you have plenty of stamina and won't tire it out. But the people who go around telling people to ALWAYS use alternating fingers no matter what, they'd say otherwise. What are your thoughts on this?
@NateNavarro
@NateNavarro 3 года назад
Hey, Rob! In the words of EVH, "If it sounds right, then it is." In my experience, musicians with legalistic mentalities towards trivial aspects of technique, music, and in general are often not very good hangs and lose out on gigs because of it. Just be cool, sound good, and have fun. :) Here's more on my own reasoning for using one finger here, copied from an earlier comment: Yeah, it's for a more consistent tone. As we know, the bass often functions as a blend between rhythm and harmony. In this section, the bass heavily leans towards its rhythmic function. The steady pulse of the pedal note provides momentum to the groove, and each note needs to be very similar in tone and volume to do this effectively. This is why it's played with all downstrokes (pick), on the original. I played it with a single finger because, while I can match volume between multiple fingers, it's not practical for matching the tone precisely. As Nicolás mentioned, each finger has a different weight, length, and strength. In addition to this, there is added tonal variation when using multiple fingers due to the different points at which they hit the string. Use you index finger to pluck the E string above your neck pickup. Now use your index finger to pluck the E string above your bridge pickup. Go back and forth, and you'll notice quite a difference in tone. Even small differences in plucking location can cause noticeable change in the strings' overtones. This is nitpicking in most contexts, especially where left-hand muting, non-pedaling basslines, faster tempos, and/or heavy signal processing is/are taking place, but I found it to be the best option here. But, if what you're playing sounds fine with another method, just to what works best for you. :)

@@NateNavarro Just a question: wouldn't it be better if this was played with a pick, just repeated downstrokes, slightly muted? For more precise phrasing? Great job otherwise, it sounds really consistent.

The function of a bass line is NOT to create an independent melody that is in "competition" with the melody of the song, but to support the groove, and - used sparingly - to create "temporary tension" in the song in a kind of "musical counter-movement". The human brain is not capable of perceiving two different melody strands at the same time - and especially not "equally". ...🤔...

Can anyone tell me how the song is in Cmajor and the guitar solo comes in Bbminor? These two keys have nothing in common, still sounds perfect. Please explain
@brixelfumpf
@brixelfumpf 3 года назад
In my opinion it works because the C and the Bb, the roots of the respective keys, are only a whole step apart. A whole step is often used as an approach note in all kinds of music and it sounds reasonably smooth in most cases. It does feel a bit abrupt, but not too harsh which really gives the song a boost of energy when the key change happens. Also, because the key modulates downwards, it sorta gives the listener the feeling that they, you know, jumped! And sure, the one key is major and the other is minor. But mixing major and minor tonalities is a very common thing to do in rock music. It's been done since the beginning. I really like the way it sounds here, it makes the solo sound a bit edgier and darker than the rest of the song. Also very nice cover, I like how intricate some of the breaks are which makes sure you can't really play the entire song on auto pilot like some people say you can.
@michaelhansen8959
@michaelhansen8959 3 года назад
@@brixelfumpf the approach is more based from alt dominant C idea. Play all notes around it. The root is Db on the solo riff. So you have 5 flat notes in one jump. Also in Db the C is the maj 7th note. So, there is some parallel connection. Because the band start on Bb( 6th of Db) , a whole step below the C, it flows very well and eventually it resolves back to the Cmaj with a semi tone. Very technical and cool modulation in this sweet song. Love it!
@michaelhansen8959
@michaelhansen8959 3 года назад
Keyboard solo is also interesting. There we have a Cmaj chromatic mediant progression. First I thought it was a mix of the 2 keys. But, it's different from what we hear in the solo riff.
