‪@jazzbassoonpaul‬ is a mad scientist musician. He put a microphonic pickup in his bassoon, hooked it up to the Line 6 Helix LT, and started shredding, looping, and making multiphonic sounds.
Awesome stuff.

I'm glad you thought so because I had a hard time capturing it.

William Shakespeare catte was fascinated! Paul’s command of the instrument (and of circular breathing) is astonishing to watch. He can make his bassoon do absolutely anything. Thank you so much Paul!!!💙💙💙

I love Paul’s playing and musicianship. I have a DVD of him playing with Bella Flick and every bassoon player (student or pro) that came into my Woodwind shop always got to hear and earful of Paul playing jazz on the bassoon. He inspires them to expand the possibilities of this amazing instrument. I like the way he makes looping look so easy. LOL!!!

Love it! I love all of Paul's releases but good grief his 2008 album Frolic in the Land of Plenty is a masterpiece. Also features my drumming hero Dennis Chambers.

That was a fun watch. Sweet Bassoon Shredding dude! There was a band rolling around the Pacific NW 92-95 or so called Diamond Fist Werny I think, that had no bassist but amplified heavily-effected bassoon and played pretty heavy rock/grunge. They used it for alot of drones but he cut loose every now and then. You play better for sure.

This is incredible! My son play bassoon and I’m hoping this inspires some experimentation. Does anyone know what kind of mic is being used? I’ve seen people modify their bocal but this mic looks like it’s clipped to the body.

I think I did a video about all the gear he uses. If he didn't mention it specifically, you can contact Paul pretty easily on social media

I can't even imagine doing these things with a bassoon. I had one with me for a few months, even being a pro cellist, a decent flutist and sax player... It's just too complicated. All those non sequential thumb keys, flicking notes... Beautiful instrument nontheless

Frank Zappa said that the alto bassoon was the hardest instrument to play. I'm still stuck on the triangle.

There’s no such instrument as an alto bassoon. Frank meant bassoon I’m pretty sure

@@jazzbassoonpaul it's non standard but exists, similar to the octave bassoon or tenoroon. Musicians seem to be less inventive with (acoustic) instruments nowadays, might be related to the invention of electronic effects and synths
@jazzbassoonpaul
@jazzbassoonpaul Год назад
@@ericoschmitt there’s a quart bassoon and a quint bassoon but these are very seldom found. Frank Zappa over the bassoon-he said so. I never ever heard anyone mention an “alto”bassoon.

@910cadillacredd a distant cousin to bassoon. If someone asks me-I’ll tell when the two instruments split off from each other-in the 1500s. The two instruments are completely different from each other-totally different fingering systems and bores. No-there’s no commonly other sizes of bassoons like there are of saxophones. The tenoroon, quint and quart bassoons are more historical bassoons more or less. A few exist that you will find at an IDRS show here and there. I’m Germany there are kinder bassoons for small children to learn; that’s more common than any other variant.
