One take, rusty as hell, mistakes and all. The OB-X8 was recorded in mono via an Avedis MA5 Preamp, into Pro Tools. A liberal amount of UA's EMT250 Reverb was applied.
@@ChrisPBacon3000 There weren't any mistakes. The intro sounded fine but then it just sounded off. Like it does when you play it on a modern synth trying to make that sound. Initially I thought he was releasing the right hand notes too soon but he isn't which leads me to say based on this demo that: Despite the Hype The OBX8 sounds like but not exactly like an OB8 or OBXa this guys effort is easily as good ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sc-Ld96kbN0.html&ab_channel=AlessandroBizzarri As is mine if I could be assed to waste 1hr filming it.
@@Lamster66 Of course the sound isn't exactly the same. That would be impossible, because EVH didn't run direct to digital. EVH most likely ran through tube pres/eqs/compressors/etc.. to tape. And when mixing, probably more sweeteners/stereo expanders/etc...
Thanks for posting this! Everyone complains about playing Jump, Tom Sawyer, etc on anything Oberheim but I think it's important to do this, especially for the OB-X8. The OB-X8 is meant to sound as close as currently possible to the original Oberheims and the iconic sounds of these songs are ingrained in everyone's memory. This is a great demo to see just how close Oberheim has been able to get. Is the OB-X8 sound a perfect clone of the OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8? No, but it's close enough for most people. Is it a fantastic synth that sounds amazing? A resounding yes!
I completely agree with you, and I’m not an analog tweak guy, so I’m pretty sure that somebody who knew what they were doing to dial in that sawtooth better than I did and make it sound more spot on because there are several patches that are absolutely identical to the original hit songs, the one used on why can’t this be love is just thunder
I disagree. The Jump sound can be easily made on just about any analog synth and isn't really a good example of what an Oberheim can do. Accurately nailing the sounds of I'll Wait would be much more impressive. Or even Tom Sawyer. But not Jump.
Cool hearing it on an Ob. Sounds great. Thanks for the clear camera angle, it’s helps. I’m learning it for my band. I should have learned it back in ‘84. I’ve got a MODX7, hopefully I can get it close. I’ve got to sing it too. Yikes, wish me luck.
Used to play this twice a night on my Memorymoog (new then for $2672+) at gigs to get people dancin'. That was the 80's, I've moved on. Jump is on the forbidden riff list now. Your version now is way better than 8 years ago. See you again in 8 years for your rendition on the OB-X256 VA.
Nice job! But he uses the higher octave on the bottom in the chorus. Plus the sound should decay slowly. Listen to the top of this song and you’ll hear the bottom notes decay so the top stabs pop out more 👍🏼 These adjustment plus a tiny bit of portamento would make it 100%.
You’re right about the higher octave I forgot to do that because it’s been years, but I don’t believe the decay that you are talking about is in the patch, I believe that’s an audio illusion created by the heavy reverb in the original, in the studio my Reverb sounded super heavy over the headphones but somehow it does not sound heavy at all in this vid
I dont have an Oberheim but a bike and with that bike I cycle past Eddy's parental home every day here in Amsterdam and when I jump with that bike it gives the same sound
Fantastic job! I just received my OB-X8 yesterday and I was extremely disappointed to find that a proper patch for Jump was not pre-programmed. I’m not very good at programming. Would you consider sharing your “patch sheet” or better yet showing how you dialed this patch in?
I’m happy to share however I can, if there’s a way to send you the SYSEX I’m happy to do it but I honestly don’t know what I did beyond twist the knobs at random and push buttons at random until things started sounding closer to what I thought they should, you have to remember there’s actually a large amount of reverb on the patch because I still don’t think I’ve dialed it into where it needs to be but it’s close
I’ve been playing in writing all my life but I’ve never been a tweak head on since and I still don’t understand how analog synthesis works, my entire life has been spent by and killer sound modules and then just modifying presets to my taste but never actually building anything from scratch that’s beyond me right now
Hey man I was doing some further tweaking and I discovered that if you take the basic brass patch from the OBXa bank, You can get a much better and in my opinion thicker sound for this patch
It really sucks that Wolfgang refuses to play VH stuff in his band Mammoth WVH. But that is his decision. He played Panama and Hot for Teacher this year at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert. But he won't play Panama when he tours with Mammoth WVH. Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony play VH songs though. And there are VH cover bands.
yeah it was, so stop acting like its fucking stairway or a fucking rickroll. your nose is so high in the air youre in danger of breaking your own neck.
@@MFitz12 thanks for taking time away from huffing your own farts to say some super clever shit again, McFitz. Everybody here thinks you're a genius. Seriously. just ask them.
Great playing. But the OBX8 is far from the OB-Xa. Actually the sample of the Obxa preset insinde Rom of the old Kurzweil K250 sounds better….. i don t think Tom has designed more than the ad in the cafe with marcus and dave. The last synth truly made by Tom was the Sem with his brand Marion Systems
I don't know man, I owned an OB8 for 25 years, and this thing sounds identical to it....it has the curtis filters and all. I can't tell the difference between my original OB and the OBX8 banks. I defy anybody to do so in a blind challenge.
Ok, admit it. When you buy a peice of Oberheim kit, new or old, this is what you do as soon as it's hooked up. How does it sound? Ok. I don't think it's really any better sounding than a lot of the VSTs or cheaper alternatives like a Matrix 6. But you pays your money and you makes your choice.
@@TheWarriorSongProject I don't know--GForce OBE is pretty killer--even Tom Obereim said so. And you can run multiple instances of it and fatten it up even more, if it's not already thick enough for you. Anyway, a synth that sounds better "in person" but not in recordings might be nice for a live band , but seems like a waste fo anyone who records music.
@@geoffk777 ok, so you don't like the recording, or you're just here to shit on the X8? I can't figure out which. By "in person", I mean "standing in the room where you can listen to the X8 against the soft synths in real time". There is no comparison.
@@TheWarriorSongProject Like I said in the beginning, the video sounds Ok, but nothing special. You're claiming that in person it's way better. Maybe that's true, but none of the clips that I've seen have really shown this. For $5000, I'd like to be more impressed. Anyway, if you're happy with it, than great. It's your money.
If you can build one on this level in the year 2022 for less than $5000 then I will be impressed. Until then, you just sound like you’re downplaying it because you can’t afford one. And frankly, they were this expensive back in the 1980s, and due to inflation alone they should Cost quite a bit more.
You know I did not have I brought on but I hear what you are talking about.., I sat down last night to dive into it a little deeper and within a few moments of switching over to the XA sound bank I modified the very first brass patch that comes up and within 10 seconds had a much better representation happening that I probably should’ve gone within the first place, but I began from the OB8 because that was the board that I used to own…
