Cool video Rich!! Very well done!! That VH debut is one of my favorite records and one of the best ever!! I’m sure this shootout will be helpful to many people! Good work!! Have a good one! Cheers, Jon
Damn, Rich! Now, that was an accurate comparison. Changing the VTA….Bravo, sir! Love that record. It’s an amazing part of the history of music. Yup, soundstage and imaging are hugely important to me. The phantom center image is kinda like a magic trick…lol. A lot of people really don’t care and just wanna hear the music, Killer vid, man. Very cool the new Bellman sounds good and is readily available 👍🎶😊
Great information. Obviously you are a real audiophile and vinyl lover but I would like to know if you have an opinion about the CD versions of the first six Van Halen albums? I am curious if the 2015 remastered versions of the CDs sound better than the original releases?
Another great video, Rich! I only had the 1978 Jacksonville pressing until I recently picked up the MOFI, and I was blown away at how fantastic it sounds!! I am keeping my preorders open for the rest of the Roth-era catalog on MOFI based on this debut pressing. It's that good! Thanks for the excellent video, I'm really enjoying your channel, VU!
Thanks, Andy. I preferred the Mofi and was pleasantly surprised. I meant to cancel the order but placed it so long ago that I forgot. I'm glad I didn't cancel, and looking forward to more VH Mofis. Cheers, Rich
Well done Rich !! I only have the 1st press and a early 80s reissue so I would enjoy hearing the copies you have. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the pressings you have. Take care !!
Great video Rich and welcome to the RU-vid VC! Great job on your shootout and I look forward to future content! One thing you might consider sharing is your equipment list
The MoFi is cut very bright, not natural sounding. Actually, the Chris Bellman cut was over seen and approved by Eddie. My best sounding one is my rare original test pressing with LW1 F.E. / LW1 in the dead wax.
Great video. Up front, honest, and a great job describing why you liked and disliked each pressing. I had very similar results. I have each of these pressings except for the DCC. I found my least favorite was the OG, and my favorite was the MoFi. The MoFi to me was like listening to it for the first time. There was so much life to it, and I heard things I'd never heard before. I think what I liked best was Michael's bass guitar on it. I felt like he was finally heard on this, and not buried in the mix. And I totally agree with you on how we each hear things differently and have different preferences in what we like and dislike. There is no wrong answer. You like what you like!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting on my video! I'm glad to hear that you had similar results with your pressings and that you enjoyed the MoFi pressing in particular. Hearing different perspectives and experiences from fellow music lovers is always great. I completely agree that there's no wrong answer when it comes to music preferences, and it's awesome that we can all appreciate different aspects of a song or pressing. Thanks again for your support and for being part of this community! Keep on enjoying the music and the journey of discovery!
Awesome video Rich!! I'm a huge VH fan and VH 1 is an album that's extremely important to me as a guitar player. The effect it had on me the first time i heard it....very few albums have done that to me. Interesting comparison video, while i agree that the OG might not be the best pressing sound wise....i always believe that first pressings are always closest to what the band and producer were going for...therefore the most accurate sounding. I've thought about getting the Bellman cut or even the RTI.....but I own a VH 1 Test Pressing...which sounds incredible so i find really no need to get another copy. Looking forward to your next video. Mark Anthony K Projekt Gemineye
Thanks, Mark. VH 1 is an amazing and frustrating (because I can't play it all) album for any guitar player. I added a brief section on the recording and intent. I think they nailed the in-your-face live energy on the OG, which is what they intended. The most important thing is listening to music you enjoy regardless of the pressing or format. Thanks again for the comment, Rich
I’m glad you liked the video. I don’t have those copies, and that’s probably good for my left ear. I think I gave myself tinnitus listening to 5 copies for a few days straight.
Cool great videos. Sibilance on the mofi. The hi hats especially. I have some communications Mofi on this topic. Many of their recent DSD cuts have the sibilant hi hats. It is especially apparent on the Hotel California.
Thanks for watching and commenting! 😊 Interesting point about the sibilance on the MoFi pressing, and I'll have to check out some of their other DSD cuts to see if I notice the same thing. Hotel California is a great example - I'll have to listen to that one. Always great to hear from fellow music lovers and get recommendations for further listening. Keep on enjoying the tunes! 🎉
45 rpm does not have a wider frequency range. A good cartridge has a frequency range well beyond the hearing range of human hearing. What it does have is wider dynamic range.
I really enjoyed your take on these albums. Very informative. That said, I would like to see a video without script reading. Just my opinion . Might be less accurate but would be more natural and enjoyable to watch.
I am surprised to hear you say there's "no discernible difference" between the (1998) DCC edition & the (2009) Warner/RTI edition cut from the same DCC metal parts! Ha! That was not my finding at all over here. Here through my system the DCC is vastly superior to the RTI and not by a small margin. The RTI is narrower, more beamy and a hair less dynamic than the DCC. Yet, it is still prefer it to the 2015 Chris Bellman which I find too thin & bright. Too bleached sounding. It simply does not have the naturalness, depth, or organic feel that the mighty DCC nor the 2009 RTI possesses. And while I don't personally own the MOFI 1-Step, I have heard it live at a client's place a couple of weeks ago and heard the same damn sonic signature I heard through some HQ sample videos on RU-vid. It is too tipped up and relatively thin/bleached sounding similarly to the 2015 Bellman cut. Just not my cup of tea. The only thing I can think of is that the 2015 Chris Bellman and the MOFI 1-Step is being liked in systems that err towards the polite or softer side of the sound spectrum. I just can't see them sounding wonderful in more resolute, full-bandwidth type systems - unless of course that's the type of sound you favor or there's some serious HF hearing loss going on. All my best, Oz LTBS
Oz, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the different versions. It's always interesting to hear how people perceive the same music differently. I agree that everyone's ear, system, and preferences are unique, and it's great to discuss our individual experiences. I appreciate your detailed description of how the DCC and RTI editions compare in your system. It's fascinating to hear how the DCC is vastly superior to the RTI in your setup, with the RTI sounding narrower, beamier, and less dynamic. I'm also intrigued by your comments about the 2015 Chris Bellman and MOFI 1-Step editions and how they may be better suited to systems that lean towards the polite or softer side of the sound spectrum. Talking about music and sound is always great, and I appreciate your input. Enjoy the music you love, and let's keep the discussion going! Thanks, Rich
@@VUmeters You are very welcome Rich! Also' let's not forget you said your DCC was picked up "used" so perhaps it's got some "wear & tear" given the fact you said it is not a super quiet pressing. Mine I bought new so it is in absolutely pristine shape. It is ultra quiet so perhaps mine is just a better sounding copy. All my best, Oz
