We traveled Alaska in our 2013 Ford Transit Connect micro camper van through the month of September! We start our road trip in Homer, Alaska at the Homer Spit Campground. After exploring the boardwalks and taking a shot of Duck Fart from the Salty Dog Saloon we make our way to Two Sisters Bakery and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. We end the day free camping in Cooper Landing. The following day we hike the Exit Glacier, drive through the town of Seward and most impressively SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS!
we traveled to Katmai National Park September 2nd, 2022
We visited Kenai Fjords National Park on September 4th, 2022

The excitement in your voices is contagious! Alaska visitors bureau needs to hire you both as spokespeople! 😂 So glad you saw the Northern Lights too. What an amazing trip. Can’t wait for more! ❤

That would be a dream! But to be fair, most people who travel to Alaska probably have the same excitement in their voice haha Thank you so much for watching, we really do appreciate it and you!

Exit Glacier is such a great learning experience on just how profound climate change has been progressing and accelerating, especially in northern latitudes. My first visit to the glacier in the early 80s allowed us to easily walk up to its face as it was still down on the flats.

You are right! It is a great learning experience, it really puts everything into perspective to see it with your own eyes.

I've always sworn off of visiting Alaska, because I hate the cold. You may have just changed my mind. Such lovely places!

We were there in the off season, when it just starts to get cold but in the summer it is even warmer! Definitely don't let the cold keep you from visiting :) Thank you so much for watching, we really do appreciate it!

The Northern Lights was always on my bucket list and eventually saw them in Iceland. When looking for a parking space - no wonder no spaces. Parking is shocking :)

We hope to see the Northern Lights in Iceland as well! That sounds amazing! Parking spot and all :)

Back in the mid-to-late 1950s (I was much younger then :-) ) I could occasionally see the Northern Lights from my back yard, about a half-mile south of the Salem, MA, line. Unfortunately the development of shopping malls and their light pollution just north of us a few years later wiped out the view.
@mikeandheather
@mikeandheather Год назад
Wow that sounds amazing! We saw on the map that the northern lights, when they are really strong, do reach the lower 48. That is incredible that you were able to see them! Thank you for watching, we really do appreciate it!

@23:00 Mike looked like "Blair Witch Project" good job buddy and you're still alive! Nice video, I still contend you need 10-15min videos. I'm a subscriber so I'll watch but newbys may forgo your channel. Super happy you're having fun and traveling, you'll remember it always! Be Safe Drive Safe!

@mikeandheather Год назад
You are right! It does have "Blair Witch" vibes haha Thank you for the suggestion, we will keep that in mind! Honestly, we have no idea how long the videos will be when we are filming and often times we forget to "end" the video and just keep going to the next day so we are forced to include more footage or the video would end to abruptly. BUT we are working on getting better with into's and outro's so hopefully it will get better going forward! Thank you so much for watching, we really do appreciate it!

I love your videos! I’m considering doing something similar, would you ever talk about how you balance working/traveling. Ie are you just doing exploring on the weekends?
@mikeandheather
@mikeandheather Год назад
Thank you for the kind words and for watching, we really appreciate it! We both dropped down to part time work while we were traveling. We quickly realized that the pace we were going at was too hard to explore and work full-time at the same time. We mostly full-fill our hours with 1-2 mornings during the week and then use the weekend to work as well. (and edit RU-vid videos) When we have a full day planned and still need to work that day we get up really early before our travel plans start and get our work done beforehand. When that isn't possible (due to not having internet connection) we call our day early and work at night after a day of exploring. We didn't film when we worked, we would just start the video after getting our work done that morning. We also didn't film every day, some days when we worked and edited a video, it was a lot of us just sitting around the van and wouldn't have made the most interesting content haha We also used our PTO to take off of work completely when we wouldn't be able to work, like on the Alaska Highway. Honestly, we were not making money while on the road, we were breaking even with how much we were earning and spending. We saved up some money from working overtime before we left that we used to fund our travels as well. We have talked about what we would do in the future if we continue van life to make our work life balance better. We decided that we would schedule designated rest/work days in-between the days we explored the area, and travel slower. (more van life less roadtripping) This would save some money and sanity haha The hardest part was feeling like we always had to be doing something because we didn't want to miss out on any experiences but there were a few times we felt a little tired and burnt out. If we had scheduled days were we did nothing but work, we wouldn't have felt guilty about not doing anything because that is what the day was scheduled for. We always felt like we had to be doing as much as possible because we never knew if we would ever be back in these places again or how long we could realistically travel like this for. That being said, we wouldn't trade this experience for anything! It has been totally worth it and with a few adjustments to our schedule we think it will be even better. Sorry for the long response, hope that helps! Best of luck in your van life journey as well!

I've got a question for Mike, since you are quite tall, do you get uncomfortable driving Appa? Have you had to make any extra seat adjustments? Thanks! Love you guys!
@mikeandheather
@mikeandheather Год назад
Thank you for the kind words and for watching, we really do appreciate it! Thankfully my height is not an issue while driving. We did not have to make seat adjustments, we just made sure to not build our bench on the driver's side of the van to make sure I could put the seat all the way back! You can see how I fit a bit better in our van tour video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LRrqbaR5a0g.html I will include a link to another video where you can see how I fit in the rest of the van here just in case you are interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fEzCltIEkiE.html Hope that helps! Thanks again for watching!

Thank you for letting us know! Our camera settings were a little off (and will unfortunately be off for a few more videos haha) neither of us had camera/editing experience before starting our channel so all this has been a huge learning curve. We really do appreciate the constructive criticism, it is helpful! Thank you for watching as well :)
