After a couple months full time in our Van, it’s time to empty the solids tank of our Natures Head composting toilet! It may not be the most glamorous, but it’s real life and if you’re looking for which toilet would work best for you we want to give you as much information as possible.

This video made me hit the subscribe button! So many idealized van life videos out there, but it’s so nice to see the practical side of van life. I wish more van lifers would think about what they wanted to know when they started and put that content out there. Great content so far, can’t wait to see more!

Hi! Just found you guys! I’ve never seen such a great how to on a natures head. This was so helpful! a Ram promaster 159 WB is one of the 2 vans I’m considering. I hooked up already on watching camper van transformation. But this is the first video I saw about the decomposting toilet. I always wonder how they clean or emptying that thing.. can you put a bag in advance so all you do is take the top off and quickly seal the top of the bag, pull the bad out and dump it ?

Certainly pushing the TMI boundary here but a couple questions all the same. 1) We spent about two weeks in a small caravan in the Nordics (two adults, two sub 5) and found with their cartridge style we could make 3-4 days on average as essentially our only toilet. As it was maybe 150% the size of your urine container it was just as easy to enter a restroom and deposit it into the toilet. It doesn't seem much different than emptying the urine every couple days, what turned you off those style toilets? 2) (This certainly edges TMI but...) One of our kids was sick for a day or two, as is typical with kids this sorta defeats the isolation between solids and liquids..... Have you dealt with looser solids yet, particularly with the young one? How does the solids side hold up?

@@jordanjenny8367 Tremendous help, the kids are still younger and while work prevents a true vanlife style it does afford me travel opportunities on occasion (the aforementioned trip was two weeks from Stockholm to Nordkapp and back to Helsinki in December) I admittedly have less options. I did however find the cartridge easy to deal with (smell was near none in use, but much as yours ripe when changed) and in winter grey water is generally deposited on the ground so attention is paid to using biodegradable soaps. I haven't been through all of your videos, if it hasn't been covered I'd be interested in the seating (safety, comfort, etc.) for your little. Safe travels my friend, sub'd for good measure ;)

It's inspiring. I was wondering if it was possible to have an ecologic toilet in a van. I have the anwser now. I didn't really understand what to do with the solids when it's empty. Is it possible to put it in a compost or is it ok to drop it in the nature, or are you forced to put it in a trash... ? (I'm sorry, I'm a beginner, I'm not even posessing a van yet and my english is not so good) For what use is the electricity ?

probably shouldn't drop it in nature, I assume this is marginally better than going for number 2 in the wild. Normally you dd need to dig 6 inches in the ground for your cat hole, in a *sunny spot* (shocking really) and it has to be away from popular trails (because the place will get filled, human population is too great), rivers/lakes and underground water ways (as to not contaminate water), trees/bushes as to not ruin their roots (I think) and at the end of the day it takes 6-12 months to decompose. This would technically be better in that the decomposition has a headstart, and the added materials usually help speed it up. Plus you aren't going for a number 2 out in the open if you are shy.

You can continue the process at home. Fully composting feces so they are safe takes 1-2 years, depending upon climate. Throwing feces away in regular garbage is irresponsible and illegal. Some use the fully composted human feces like regular compost but I'm too squeamish to put that on my veggie patch.

Dumb question...no toilet paper goes in the toilet correct? Just in a garbage can or something?...I don't know much about compost toilets. Thx. Informative video.

In another video they mention using a small garbage can for paper. Personally I'm not sure it's a necessity but it would certainly reduce the load (no pun intended...).

@@jordanjenny8367 Hey guys, I'm looking at purchasing one of these toilets in the near future. Thanks for the video - it really helped, but I had a couple of questions: 1. You said toilet roll isn't great in with the solids, but I was considering something like 'Thetford Aqua Soft Toilet Paper' (search on Amazon for it). I use it in my current chemical toilet and it works great there. Is that something you've tried before? 2. Do you put chemicals in the urine container or is smell not an issue for that?
