I ordered Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. It's my first D&D book. 🙂 I also got some character journals that have character sheets on some of the pages (one for main, about four or five in the back of the journals), and I got a set of 6 D&D dice all in different colors. 😊 Since I'm new to D&D, I use my imagination without things like a battle mat or miniatures. I honestly can't wait to play Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft if it's an adventure. 🙂 Super stoked! Happy to have found this video. As always, amazing work, Nate. 🌟

I’m wrapping up Strahd, and I’ve run a ton of Call of Cthulhu. My favorite horror system hands down though is ALIEN. Very clever system, fun to play, easy to learn, and amazing world building. It actually makes the prequel content... good. More importantly, it creates enough threats with other factions, ship to ship combat, double agents, etc., that you aren’t always inevitably waiting for the classic xeno to show up. It may not show up at all, and it’s still a great time.

I have been really excited about this book. Yet, the more I hear about it the more disappointed I am about what it isn't. I was so excited to rediscover D&D after 30 years away. But, I don't feel like the target audience anymore. I really want to be positive... I'm really glad you are enjoying this so much. I'm hoping I love it too. I love Mike Schley maps - so that's really great to hear he's in there. Thanks!

Brian Cherry: while I dislike the current direction of WOTC, it is possible to use some of the modern 5e material and ignore some of the more dubious ‘pandering to a certain’ material. If you have come from older editions, you are probably used to mix and matching the rules to your own tastes - I know I never played in a group of AD&D that played strictly by the rules! Yep, it is certainly annoying to be paying money for the material that may annoy, but to be honest I’m more annoyed by the poor quality of some of the materials used to make the books, than the little bits of ‘WOKE’ shite I can ignore.

@@Fruitbat-tb3lg You are 100% right. The quality of some of it is really sad. Icewind Dale is an example of a book which is trying so hard to be something inoffensive it ends up making little impression at all. Different adventures are written in completely different styles, with vastly different amounts of "read aloud" text. And in the end, they can't write flawed characters anymore... well, except one type.

@@briancherry8088 I’ve not bought that book yet. To be honest, the excitement of new D&D books has wained of late. I’ve been buying RPG books for the last 30 years and to be honest, it is more a lingering habit than a passion now. I sold a lot a few years back and I can still use much of the material in a game if I wanted. I think the makers of Dungeons and Dragons are just following the latest fad - it won’t last forever, hopefully! 😎

You continue to have some of my favourite content reviews. Short, pretty insightful, hitting the main points of interest about a book or product, and more impartial than many. Some people try to be hypemen for the new book or their sponsor, but you actually feel more impartial in comparison - so I don't listen to them but do listen to you.

If you want a horror RPG alternative to D&D, Dread is an excellent option. I haven't played many RPGs besides D&D, but Dread is aptly suited for the horror genre. The only game mechanic is players pull from a Jenga tower to determine success/failure. The tension players feel when they pull from the Jenga tower will spill over into the story. There's a video somewhere on RU-vid of Wil Wheaton playing Dread with a few other people, if you're interested.

A couple of years ago, I ran a 5e campaign which focussed on a coven of Hags. There was one trip into a demi-plane of dread, which involved a little girl and her birthday party. It was always her birthday... Mummy turned out to be a Zombie Lord, adapted from 2nd-edition AD&D, and the apparently lovely treats were, of course, rotten flesh, maggoty fruit and so forth. The little girl was in thrall to the Zombie Lord. The PCs' powers were thwarted somewhat by the "Odour of Death" which could affect things like saving throws or impose "Contagion". It was horrific enough. Going back further, most of a 2e campaign revolved around undead and Ravenloft. I found a good horror campaign has more to do with the players' attitudes than game mechanics or the struggles of the DM to set the tone. Even when the PCs' spirits ended up in puppets, it was still more amusing to the players than scary.

I wanted to echo Alien and Mothership RPGs both of which feature better horror mechanics and are more suitable to running a horror game. Also, some of the OSR games like B/X, Five Torches Deep or Old-School Essentials are definitely better suited to horror than 5e given how much more fragile and less powered the player characters are. Of course the default New World of Darkness where you played mortals, rather than vampires, Prometheans, etc., is also better suited to a horror game.

It could work. I would actually recommend one of the adventures that comes with the starter set or essentials kit. However, those are not settings, but rather adventures set in the forgotten realms. If you are looking for a setting, this one is fine if you like the flavor and feel of it. But it’s definitely unique. Would not necessarily make for a standard D&D game.

I'm actually reading through a pdf of 2e's Domains of Dread that everyone lauds, and I'm most of the way through the Domain descriptions and I really don't see much that stands out yet. Necropolis doesn't even have a stated Darklord and Dimentlieu is unremarkable altogether. The Darklord's curse is "the women he finds attractive see him as repulsive" and he seems more of a jerk than truly evil. It seems like the biggest difference lies in the later parts of the DoD book with Fear/Horror/Sanity checks, but those are vastly just tables and modifiers, focusing more on on how to interpret a character's reaction to spooks into various debuffs, but so far I haven't come across anything that helps show great ways of evoking fear or creating good horror scenarios.

@vigorouslethargy
@vigorouslethargy 3 года назад
@@irontemplar6222 I'll concede on the Darklords not having stat blocks. That's kinda dumb, although most give at least a "treat them as x creature" to give reference. After finishing the 2e Domains of Dread book I can say in my opinion that it really isn't leagues above this. While some of the detailed domains in 2e are cooler than the 5e ones, there's also some pretty lame ones as well. The "Curses" section in 2e is detailed, but it's overly wordy for what the end result is and takes sittitng down and using your class, alignment, background, emotional state, justification for the curse, power of the curse, and wording just to work out a percentage of success. To be honest I don't think either version do a great job of distilling a good procedure to make a horror campaign fun and exciting, but the 5e breakdown of different horror genres I found much more valuable than the "Tenets of Terror" chapter from 2e.

Curse of Strahd is a full adventure book, whereas this is setting guide. This book does have one short adventure in chapter 4, but Curse of Strahd is pretty much all adventure. One big storyline. Someone can feel free to correct me (because I haven't read the whole thing) but I think CoS takes place only in one domain of dread: Barovia. Van Richten's Guide includes many domains and therefore will give a DM the ability to create their own Ravenloft adventures that have very different tones, themes ,etc.

Horror (in small doses) is great, but imo as a long campaign is defeatist. The horror aspects of DnD needs to be a varying rollercoaster ride and not a long race at a sprint. At times inject horror, but at various and infrequent moments. That heightens the horror, such as in (older) 2 hour horror movies. You need light to show dark, but dark all the time, as everything is now... SUCKS! (pun intended) This is why I feel (imo) CoS is way too long. So, I took Ravenloft and converted it to an annual "one-shot" my group plays each Halloween. But... to each their own.

I'm actually in a CoS campaign for the first time right now, level 5, and having a blast. I don't know what (if any) aspects our DM is tweaking from the book, but we've felt a consistent sense of survival being the name of the game. We've had to think critically in order to overcome encounters or find ways of escape when out of our league. And we haven't found a single gosh-darned healing potion as of yet. All in all, it really comes down to the basics in ttrpgs: how much the DM immerses you, and how much the players feed back into it via their characters.
@MarkLewis...
@MarkLewis... 3 года назад
@@vigorouslethargy (spoiler free but comments) I'm glad you like it... now, but chances are it's going to get repetitive and frustrating. I'm pretty confident your DM is going to nerf, shorten, and change things in the fear that, if they don't, the players will (soon or sooner) lose interest, as well as for the DM to lose interest to run. Kind of like the initial excitement everyone gets in starting "Tomb of Horrors" but then, actually playing it, most everyone HATES it! I DM and play in a group with 2 other DMs, and the 3 of us, (all different styles) take turns DMing. I plan my own (Homebrew) campaigns, as well as run pre-gen modules, (Icewind Dale, Phandelver, Tiamat, etc...) with my converted (original) Ravenloft being one as well. I plotted out what a full CoS campaign progression would be, (Death House and all) and quickly realized there's just too much to coordinate for just 1 enormous campaign of (not cat, but) "bat and mouse" repetition. Put apropos... It will be exciting and even funny at first, but then will quickly, over and over, slowly drain the blood out of you... drop by drop... in enervating frustration, for 2 or more years! If your group does somehow complete the CoS module... Congrats... but tell me if the ending payoff was worth all you went through? Anyway... I hope CoS is awesome start to finish for you!!! Hear from you in 2 years! 🧛‍♂️

It's interesting, but has issues. Honestly, in order to enjoy this, you cannot read the older editions. If we keep in mind that this is a reboot, essentially wiping the slate clean, then we have a decent supplement that introduces new campaign ideas in a realms where doomed personalities rule and are tormented at the same time. That being said, it's severely lacking compared to the original 2e and 3e material in world building and background. Perhaps this will change in future supplements, but for now, its as deep as the Dungeons and Dragons 80's cartoons is to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. The gender swapping of a few darklords may seem a bit peculiar to fans of the older editions, but it does not really spoil the environment or setting. Of greater damage is that a lot of these darklord's tragic and horrific stories have been replaced with new backgrounds that don't have the same impact as the original. Some are so bizarrely low on the horror scale that you wonder how they got drawn into Ravenloft in the first place compared to various villains from Greyhawk or Toril. They should have just introduced these new characters as new darklords with new domains.

Content warnings are a fing joke. In real Ravenloft, the heroes have limitations. The place is literally a "Sinkhole of Evil" Some spells are limited or weakened and others, specifically evil spells are enhanced. Villains and monsters can be more powerful.
