We felt the OEM Vanagon Diesel fuel filter didnt offer fine enough filtration for the smaller injector nozzle orifices on the TDI, plus I wanted to keep the sweet original filter housing, so we found a filter that fit the original housing and gives filtration down to 5 microns.

Karl is right. The stock TDI filter has a thermostatic tee that diverts fuel back to warm things up. But that would require re-routing the return. Plus the thermo tee is fragile (plastic) and expensive. I like your idea a lot better and will do that when I make the jump to a 1Z this winter. BTW I bought my Westy from Karl around 15 years ago when he lived in MD. Absolutely great guy, he has forgotten more about mTDI swaps than the rest of the diesel T3 world ever knew.

Great thorough vids, very clear explanations, am I right in thinking the AHU conversion is pretty much the same as for a 1Z?

34k on 1.6na fuel filter, works fine. MPGs great and the mTDI is fine. Not sure why you're the only TDI conversion with this problem. I've gone 34k on two filters, the change interval is 20k.

Have you validated these claims? What issues were you experiencing (missed that in video if mentioned)? I'm running a stock 1.6na fuel filter flange off of my Diesel Vanagon. I use the TDI spec'd filter for it. I've been all up California and out to Arizona so far, about 6k miles on a new long-block AHU mTDI setup. No issues, purs like a kitten. We're both using Karl's pump, so something seems amiss here.

No, youve got exactly what im running then, if by "TDI specd" filter you mean a filter that goes as fine as the OEM TDI filters go. I have the factory Vanagon Diesel filter housing and a 5 micron filter.

Interesting. Do you have an 82? I think the filter housing on yours is different than mine, because every AHU OEM filter i looked at in no way came close to fitting the housing on my 83. Mines a screw on type, the AHU ones werent. You should make a quick response vid showing your solution. Baldwins are great filters by the way, very well known in the diesel world.

okay, I just found what filter I am using, too many notes. I'm using a 1.6na filter housing and a Bosch 457-434-106-851 filter or N4106. Not sure of micron level, but has been working perfectly for me no symptoms.

Cool...thats a thread in allright. And i just looked it up and it says it goes "as low as 6.5 microns", so if theyre honest about that rating we should be able to use that one too. Good score.

jtlachappelle hello and thanks for the videos! I’ve referenced them several times as I am in the middle of a 1z swap into an 82 dv. Since I have the same spin on bracket in my van, I going this route and even bought the same filter, however, I keep coming across info indicating that the Bf587-d is a 20 micron filter. Just wanted to give you a heads up!
