This video has been SO HIGHLY REQUESTED over the years. As a graduate of Vancouver Film School (Digital Design) I often get questions like "Should I go to VFS?" or, "How was your experience at VFS?" or, "Did the program help you get a job?" or "was it worth the money?". Today I'm sharing the answers!
So if you've been considering learning a new discipline and wondering if VFS is right for you, hopefully, this video will help you make a decision for your future.

Ahh I really needed this! I agree so much with the whole online and in school experience part and was like is it worth it if it’s online? I’m so glad I came across this because I was thinking of the same thing and glad I watched this! Thank you!~

I have a question. You mentioned there were some who got into UX for VR. Did they need to learn something extra? Something that you didn’t need to learn? Like unity, 3D modeling?

Thanks for this! You are totally right about the portfolio vs education. I do have one question though. Did the diploma require you to spend money on equipment?

Great question! No the school does a pretty good job of providing gear while you're attending the program. I know for majority of the program I used a lot of my own stuff (computer, camera, tablet, gimbal) but they do give you some free options :)

I am planning to study film production there , so i want to ask you that do you have degree? if so then in what subject. is degree worth doing or i should just learn from diploma and get myself into work and experience field more sooner?

I'm going for a completely different course in Vancouver the next year, but was always curious about the VFS and filmmaking even though i dont have any knowledge about it. This video was really insightful and I'll probably give skillshare a shot after some time, just because I'm interested haha.. Thanks for this :)

That's awesome, yeah Skillshare is pretty dope because you can literally learn so many of the technical skills that you might learn at Film School, but it's all visually taught and at your own pace. I find classroom learning to be a bit more tough to pay attention and if you miss one thing, you might get lost and fall behind (which I did ALL the time). So good luck with your filmmaking endeavours 😛, help yourself to one of the free membership trials if you would like :) Happy creating!

@@Sourav0116 That is a great question, I have no idea actually hahahah 🤔. I think it's valid for at least the next month or two. So if you write down the code you could probably activate it next month. I should ask and find out though!

Thanks for this amazing video! I was planning on studying the 3D Animation /Visual Effects program. Do you think it's good for finding a job in the Canadian job market? I really love animations but I have a BS in Computer Engineering and since I am an international student, I want to be able to find a job so I can stay in Canada. Do you think I should go for this program at VFS or continue the CS field in another university in Canada?

Hey, that's a great question. Honestly, a lot of people who I know that moved to Canada for school had a hard time getting a sponsor to get citizenship/ PR because the job market is sooo competitive. BUT with that said, if you are extremely skilled with work experience and a strong portfolio, I think it's possible. Doing education to get into a country can pay off but you might have to be open to moving to another canadian city after your school program is finished, it all depends son where work is available :) Best of luck, I hope that helps

Im almost done with my application and i'm so concerned on it, everyone says they don't care about talent only money, that they don't care if your works good on your portfolio just if you can financially support it... It was my dream school but I guess its worse than it seems? I was going to go for Makeup in film & television and I cant find practically anything on peoples opinions on it... Wondering if its worth to apply :/ someone even said if you are a VFS graduate you wont be respected in the industry..

Hey Karina, I would say doing the makeup in film & television program is probably worth it. Though I would advise waiting until you can do the program in person. Otherwise you're paying an incredibly inflated rate to do online tutorials. :) Best of luck with it though!

Thank you for this video and information! I am international student and my dream is to work in the VFX industry.. I saw that if I’m doing the digital design program, I can than get into the VFX program.. do you this path can land me a job eventually? Or maybe there’s another resource you recommend more than VFS..? Maybe CGspectrum or think tank? Thanks a lot!

Hey Saar, honestly if you want to get into VFX Vancouver FIlm school is a great option. You will learn a lot and there are a lot of people you will meet from the industry. Although it's expensive, I do think it's worthwhile :)

Hi I’m from Mexico, I’m currently studying a bachelors degree in film production but I want to move to Canada and study film there since is more know and I would have more opportunities in the film industry. The question here is, well VFS is really expensive for me, but I could start to save money and work so I can get some and help my parents with the tuition. Is there more Mexican students there? Is there a lot of job opportunities after graduate of the program? Do you know infocus film school, I saw like 10,000$ less than vfs so I am considering it but I haven’t see any info about it

Hey, great question! Yes there are a lot of Mexican & latino students :) There are job opportunities, but your biggest challenge will be getting a visa & finding a company to sponsor you. I'm not sure about infocus, I have never heard of them, but i hope this helps a little bit. Bets of luck!

The timing of this video is insane😅, i was recently thinking about going to VFS for VFX and animation after i finish my Multimedia Design degree here in Mexico, and a lot of the videos i have seen about the VFS experience always are a bit ambiguous or have information that is not that clear, but your video answered a lot of my questions really well, even if its not the same program. I think i just want to study in VFS to have some sort of entryway to the canadian job market, even if i already have experience in the field 😅 .

Hey Juan, yeah that makes total sense. That's what I did too, I wanted to move to the West Coast anyway, so I found that doing a program is a good way to transition into a cross-country (or cross-continent) move! Either way, I think theres always something to be learned and if you're already good at VFX/ animation you'll have a head start and get to build on your skillset even more! Hello, I am writing a science fiction story about the adventures of a group of robots in the form of mythological creatures living in Portugal and I would love to go to the Vancouver Film School to do the television writing course. I would like to know if at Vancouver school I could find colleagues who could help me adapt my book for a TV series. I would love, for example, to meet students in the course of actors who could be interested in playing the role of my characters, for example could it be possible to create with the other students a team of writters, actors, animators and other artists to help me in my goal of giving life to my sci-fi stories?

Heyyy harmonie I'm from India and I'm interested in joining the make-up for television and films course at VFS but couldn't because of vivid situation so maybe next year but I wasn't sure if spending so much money is worth it specially for us international students and our currency value it's a lot of money but I've always wanted to settle in the west so is this a good way to go? Or I have one more option which is cinema makeup school in LA and it's really really famous and much cheaper than VFS so it's nearly impossible to get citizenship in US but I can find a good job in bollywood in India after I come back so what would you suggest? Please help cuz there are literally no videos on that my course of personal experiences 🌻

I studied there 21 years ago, it was a combo of traditional animation and 3D with Maya software...actors and actrices where always very loud ja, we used the cyber café for email home and there where no youtubers!
