In his new book, CNN anchor and "60 Minutes" correspondent Anderson Cooper tells the story of the Vanderbilt family dynasty - from his great-great-great-grandfather, Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt, once the richest man in America who built his fortune through steamships and railroads, to his mother, socialite Gloria Vanderbilt. Cooper talks with correspondent Mo Rocca about how the wealth and privilege in his family tree marked succeeding generations.

The Vanderbilt family is not different from many wealthy families around the world. The old saying goes. First generation makes it, second generation works it and third generation spends it. I don't think they were crazy. It just proves the point that if you never worked for it then there is no value to it.

Thanks, Biltmore, for being beautiful!

I was a child/teenager the last time I toured Biltmore, but is that the two-story one that when you enter from the main entrance to the home is kind of in a bit and to the left/towards the beginning of the regular tour? When I was visiting they were filming "Hannibal" that day in that room and happened to be on a production break and a docent person let us peek our heads in and there was Anthony Hopkins in his creepiest form, just casually standing in that library. It creeped me out terribly and the rest of the tour was a nightmare for me as I felt like I was in a giant haunted house or something lol.

The Vanderbilt family are a prime example of the proverb “rags to rags in three generations” - the first generation makes money, the second spends it, and the third sees none of the wealth.
@janet1717
@janet1717 3 года назад
If you read their story, the second generation, the commodores son, doubled the fortune and then some. Your statement about them is not entirely true. Gloria’s grandfather died early of drink and debauchery. His grandmother was a twin, and her sister had affair with the Duke of Windsor. It’s a very, very interesting story.

A ridiculous statement in this case...this family didn't start in rags and hasn't ended that way.
@wdm5552
@wdm5552 3 года назад
But the second generation of Vanderbilts, exemplified by William Henry Vanderbilt, increased the fortune from $100 million to over $200 million. The third generation saw -- and spent -- plenty of that wealth. On such houses as Biltmore, The Breakers and Marble House, to name a few of the most extravagant and costly houses ever built in America. I don't believe any of them wore rags.
@exaudi33
@exaudi33 8 месяцев назад
@@janet1717 Gloria's father, not grandfather, died of drink. His sister-in-law, Thelma Furness was the twin sister of Gloria's young mother. Thelma did indeed have an affair with the then-Prince of Wales, later Duke of Windsor. It's an even more interesting story if you can get your facts straight.

If young people even know his connection, him and his mother are seen as postive outcomes. Timothy Olyphant as well. All three people talented in their own right

My paternal Grandmother was employed by the Vanderbilts in Newport, RI. There were times when she had to travel to their other places or risk loosing her job. With four children and no other means of support she had no good options. She kept the job by farming the older boys out,the youngest boy (my Dad) was left in an home for boys and the daughter went to an aunt. Not happy time for any of them. I am happy for Anderson Cooper’s forthright interview. It seems that time, and an open, insightful, mind can challenge the weight of the past. I may need to read his book.

I always knew "the Vanderbilts" were part of American history. But, as a kid growing up in Dutchess County, NY, in terms of something that I could see and touch, we had the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY, that was so impressive. And yet it was described by an architectural historian as "modest" for a Vanderbilt house. Oh my!

Anderson Cooper is gifted, remarkable, resilient BECAUSE HIS MOTHER WAS THE EXAMPLE. Unfortunately, his dad died unexpectedly and Gloria Vanderbilt kept picking up the pieces of a very troubling life of LOSS. And don't get me wrong, EVERYBODY is going to pass away, but very few people can handle the unfortunate trials that she had as a young child being kidnapped herself; her husband died young at 50; her other song committed suicide, her shrink and personal attorney STOLE her money and even though she sued and won the case, she never received the restitution due her. And so you see, even the very rich are marked with bad times. As for her jeans, some of us are working with too much to wear them. But she was CLASSY and INSPIRATIONAL. And therefore Anderson could not be any less FABULOUS! I love that platinum hair of his. Congratulations to you Anderson Cooper for a life (so far) well lived.
