Not only were they great to work with, but some invited me into their lives and shared their culture, customs, and favorite foods with me. I don't know where you live, but in my state there is an annual Filipino picnic. Filipinos from all across the state and other parts of the country attend. I love the Filipino family values, how they include extended family, and their respect for the elderly. We could sure use a heaping dose of those values in our American society today.

Vanessa, thank you for your testimony! It was heart felt and well thought out. I am white, but married my Mexican husband 15 years ago after dating him for 7 years (I was 16 we when started dating). My kids are mixed too. I am obviously not a racist. However, 2 weeks ago at a bbq with friends for 20 years plus (mix of Mexicans, white people, and korean) I was accused of being a racist and hateful person because I said I love my president and think illegal immigration should be stopped. If feel it should be stopped not only because of the stresses and multiple issues that face our country because of it, but also because of the forced slave labor, horrific migration issues (rape, cartel travel, sex and other human trafficking) and the need to hide from authorities and issues that arise from that (not reporting crimes, increased poverty, dangerous neighborhoods, again slave labor). I am not an intolerant person and yet I was treated horribly by long time friends. I feel we should each be judged on the content of our character and not by our skin color. Final thought, your observation on low expectations was 100% accurate. Thanks again!

There are many Mexican Americans like myself that despise the modern left and how radicalized and crazy they have become. Just know that not every minority is a non-thinking zombie like those idiots that called you those names. A majority of American hispanics don't agree with illegal immigration and the open borders crowd. Keep strong and not be afraid to stand up for your rights.

I'm 1/4 Hispanic and who knows ?/64-1/1024 Native American, also. I too wish they just had a box that says "American." Am I supposed to pick White, or Hispanic or what and who cares? I'm an American citizen, that should be enough. Oh and for you haters out there, who think I'm a racist, well my wife is 100% Mexican American as is her whole family, my kids 5/8 Mexican American, my Dad, 14th generation mostly white American, a sister in law is Asian, some coworkers are Americans, who happen to be of the black race, and I love them all. When do we stop labeling people and trying to separate them? We are Americans, or legal immigrants (hopefully someday Americans) or illegal immigrants, race shouldn't matter. As for the illegals, I feel we need a solution that eventually includes the ones that aren't violent, but we need to stop letting more in first, until all of the non-drugged out homeless have full time jobs and our teens also have part-time jobs. Then after our borders(both on land and via air) are secured, we can make some decisions for the illegals, and allow more legal immigration as needs arrive.

Terry Kendrix yes, thank you for sharing this, I am conservative, not hardcore, not religious conservative, my one parent is an immigrant from Germany after ww II (which was horrible ) my other parent is a child of an aboriginal parent who was kicked off the reserve 100 years ago for being a halfbreed. My heritage I always joke that based on the events of the past century that I shouldn’t exist. I was taught that my parents and grandparents who faced tremendous hardship only wanted to make sure that either their kids or grandkids would be in a good place economically. They sacrificed so I could have the life and education I do today. When I hear that the left doesn’t value those hardships or discounts them and says I benefit fro white privilege and I should be guilty for it it drives me crazy. I know my families history. Being an immigrant from Germany in the 1950’s was not a good deal. Being a child of a halfbreed through the fifties and sixties and living in abject poverty was not a good deal. But when I try to tell a leftist these things they shut me up,and call me racist because I will not acknowledge my privilege. My families story and struggles do not matter because I am outwardly white, male, and well educated. Speaking out only invites more hateful responses from the left but I have to to honour my families sacrifices. I am only here today because of the hardship they endured and what they taught me.

Your walk away story is not very different from my own. I was a Bernie supporter during the primaries, it was only because of my husband, who had been doing a ton of research about all of the candidates, that I voted for Trump. I did NOT trust Trump. But I did (and still do) trust my husband. Milo Yiannopolous was a big part of my turn around, too. His whole thing about freedom of speech and how important it is to let people talk even when you don't agree with their opinion because that's the only way I can possibly know if they actually have anything worth saying. So I started listening. And I started responding to people only when I agreed with something they said. And the way I saw things really started to change. It was kind of revolutionary. In the 1920’s my grandparents escaped intolerable conditions in Europe (religious, economic). They immediately decided to become Americans and apply to become LEGAL citizens. Learning English was one of their primary goals. They did not get the option of pressing 1 for German. This is America and English is our language. Also, who has determined that we must give all of our wealth to 3rd world countries? That would be the left. They call themselves Progressives, because that sounds so much better than communist. However, take a really good look, there is no difference between communism and progressivism. Obama went around to many of these 3rd world countries (including Kenya) apologizing for America’s wealth. He didn’t care about our economy. He worked hard on giving it all away. I’ll be damned if some one will take away the fruits of all my hard labor And I do mean hard. I worked many 14 hour days to ensure a comfortable retirement. Yes, I care about the less unfortunate and I am extremely generous to a number of charities. However, I control to whom and how much. My government does not have that right. I weep with joy that there are some on the left who are beginning to see what is really going on with progressive ideology and what the real truth is. I applaud this woman’s ability to think and discover this truth. I hope that soon she will extend those same rights she cherishes to the pre-born and stop thinking it is OK to slaughter them. I hope she will discover that same hypocrisy in her own thinking. I applaud the progress she has made, there is still a ways she needs to go.

I am an almost 50 mother of 2 teenagers and have been very encouraged to see so many young adults speaking out about opening their eyes and hearts to a different view of our beautiful country. I have a niece that is mixed white and hispanic and it has never dawned on me to ask her if she has been treated differently by her peers. I wish more people could get past their fear to see that many conservative Americans are open minded and welcome the chance to have a civil, adult conversation about the many obstacles our country faces. Vanessa, thank you so much for this video. I almost got a lump in my throat when you started talking about how your mother responded to your views on immigration. Like you I am also mixed. My mother was white-English background-and my father is Mexican. I struggled a lot during my childhood with anger and sadness. I was born in Mexico City but moved back to Dallas with my mother when I was 2 because she wanted to be closer to her family in Ennis where she grew up and also wanted me to go to school here rather than in Mexico. I went to private school. Often times I was made fun of because to most of the white kids I looked Mexican. They made jokes about me. For middle school my mother let me go to public school because I had been miserable at the private school I went to. It was a culture shock. I found that the hispanic or Mexican American kids didn't like me either. I felt like I didn't belong anywhere. My parents played tug of war with me. My mother wanted me to be American and white. My father wanted me to be a Mexican and if he had had his way I would be living in Mexico. I always considered myself American. That doesn't mean I am not proud of my Mexican ancestry. I am probably the only one in my family who really wants to know more about my indigenous Mexican ancestry if anything. I am a conservative and consider myself Republican. Because I voted for Trump I have had relatives in Mexico criticize me. These are the same relative whom I remember as a child made fun of me because I did not speak Spanish. These are the same relatives who consider themselves to be upper class in Mexico and would never accept darker Mexicans or indigenous looking Mexicans into their own families. At one point when I was in college I dated a Mexican girl whom my own father did not like because he thought she looked very dark. That is the hypocrisy which only strengthens my resolve for my beliefs. It's funny how the people who call Trump and anyone who has conservative ideas racist are themselves guilty of discrimination. It would be nice to have a discussion with you about our similar experiences. Thanks for the video. It really touched my heart.
Oooooh this made me cry, you basically just described my childhood as well. Grew up in SoCal, had a much deeper tan, got the same treatment from kids. Then we moved to the east coast and it got better, but the Hispanic kids were unwelcoming because I didn't speak Spanish. I've since taken many years of it and can muddle my way through a conversation, but I've never really been accepted by either community. I'm realizing now though, that maybe that was a good thing - maybe that's why we're finally able to see identity politics for what they are, a tool to divide us. +Dream Diction don't confuse Hispanics in Mexico and Latin America with Spaniards. People from Spain who are of pure Spanish origin are white unless of course you consider Spaniards in southern Spain who have North African admixture from the time of the Moorish conquest. The Moors did occupy Spain for 700 years after all. Mexicans and other Latin Americans on the other hand have admixtures including Native American and Black ancestry as well as Spanish. But instead of getting off on this tangient why can't you simply appreciate the message we are trying to convey here? You are completely missing the point. People like Vanessa and myself were put in a circumstance where people expected us to align ourselves with one group or the other. At the same time we were isolated by both of groups at one time or another. The key takeaway from this video and our comments is that everyone must think for themselves instead of buying into identity politics. There is no need to insult Americans. I’ve watched a lot of these #walkaway vids and I must say I have found yours to be very important. I myself am very conservative. Thank you, I don't think you realize how much this hits home. I'm tearing up, to be honest! I have a really amazing partner at home, and together he and I have had our eyes opened to so many things -- I think he's swung further right than I have! Having at least one person in my life who doesn't judge me has been a lifesaver, I don't know how someone would do this if they didn't have some sense of support. It's really sad lately how divided we've all become.
I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter - I saw my mom just this past weekend and it was awkward. We stayed pleasant, didn't argue - but we only talked about movies and TV. It's like those are the only safe subjects left. Up until just a year or two ago I could stay up half the night talking to my mom about anything and every thing. It breaks my heart that we don't see eye to eye on things anymore. I think the biggest hurt comes from her thinking that I'm being "brainwashed" because I'm willing to listen to other viewpoints even if I don't totally agree with them. As a veteran, stunned by all the insane rhetoric and actions these last few years, your video is a great comfort to me - thank you. Long ago I swore a oath to defend The Constitution, have served during war, and always seen all Americans as American and consider my "race" as simply and truthfully "human", end of story. As a human being, I understand first hand how painful words from a mother that should never be said to a son or daughter feels like. What your mother said was awful. I truly rejoice your eyes are beginning to open, and want with my whole heart for you to see more and more and grow and know more truth. I can say personally that healing from emotional pain inflicted by your mother and others can only come through forgiveness. I found it impossible (personally) to do, till I came to a personal, saving, and living faith in the person of Christ Jesus, The Son of God. The fact people and peers all your life have given you grief about your being "mixed", or "too light" or whatever else does not surprise me (sadly). Jealousy is an ugly thing, and most women (girls too) hate any woman more beautiful than they are - men tend to be cruel in other ways more, but that is another topic. It is a simple fact God has gifted you with a unique beauty and not surprising you have been (again, a sad commentary of our fellow human beings - we are all sinful) picked on by both sides. I'm so glad you are here!! I can't ever imagine what you're going through, but I know exactly how underserved you are. That VA crisis line is so underfunded, so understaffed, it's sad. Our line, the NSPL, shares the same number, you get to the VA line by calling the NSPL # and selecting option 1... then you sit on hold... for a really long time sometimes. I talk to Vets all the time who are tired of waiting on that line to talk to someone that may be too busy to really listen. I sincerely hope you stay and keep fighting. We need your voice. I can tell you as someone who attempted many years ago that being here and staying has become amazing. It was hard for a long time, sure, but I'm living my best life and have been with the love of my life for the past five years. We've been taking this journey together and I'm really lucky to have him. It sounds like you have friends and family too who care about you and would miss you very much. Marc Lussier I'm not a veteran, and I've never seen combat, but I was raised with a mentally ill mother, severely mentally ill, from the time I was 3 until 22 when she was institutionalized. I have realized that I do have PTSD. When your 12 years old and you're locking your bedroom door because your mother tried to strangle you the night before calling you the devil's spawn, that does something to you. I inherited the depression as well. No medicine makes a difference I just have to trudge through it although I'm finding as I get older the depression is being replaced by anxiety instead of not being able to get out of bed now I can't get out of my front door, or my car, or Walmart fast enough before the profuse facial sweating starts and my knees come so close to buckling... I also have a severe Lumbar and sacral lack injury and it's so painful every single damn day. When I get it tomorrow I'm going to think of you. Somewhere under the skies there we are living parallel lives so far apart. The same but different different but the same. God bless you thank you for your service.
