--------
Vanilla Ice discussed his early career, starting with his first album, "To the Extreme." The album was repackaged by SBK Records and included tracks produced by Bay Area legend Khayree. Despite the lack of funding for marketing materials and videos, Vanilla Ice’s music gained traction through live performances and radio play, particularly on Khayree network K104. His single "Ice Ice Baby" was a major hit, especially in the South, topping black radio charts for nearly a year before crossing into pop audiences. Vanilla Ice also noted how the format transition from cassette to CD helped his sales. Vanilla Ice highlighted the historical significance of "Ice Ice Baby," which was the first rap song to top the Billboard 200 chart, and "To The Extreme" became the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time -- spending 16 weeks at number one and selling 50 million copies worldwide.

I was a mobile DJ when "Ice Ice Baby" hit the charts. I had a weekly gig at a bowling alley every Friday night for 4 hours. I had to play the song AT LEAST four times per gig. I would tell them, "I already played it." They didn't care, they wanted to hear it over and over again. HUGE HIT is an understatement. People just couldn't get enough of that song.

@@mikeg2491 Because Mario was working for Death Row. You know record companies have ghostwriters on payroll, right? He heard the story, presented it yo an attorney and got the man his money. He did it to his own DJ too, look it up DJ Earthquake. Mario Johnson. Check the writing credits. Everybody ended up hating Vanilla Ice because he's a pathological liar. Every time you turned around it was just more and more bs. The hip hop community isn't really forgiving for that type sht. Even now knowing fully we'll everybody knows this story-- he's still telling people he wrote it when he was 16. And if thats not ridiculous enough-- him and the DJ fell out because the DJ didn't want to give him the music part (minus the lyrics) because he didn't want someone else to hear his beats and claim it. But VI insisted he needed it because he wrote songs in his car. 😆😆 He was clearly taking it to a writer. Then released it without crediting (or even telling) the DJ. Dudes a whole clown.

@@gjd424 Ice Ice Baby was the first rap song to go to number one on the top 100 of Billboard. License to Ill by the Beastie Boys was the first rap album to go to number one on Billboard 200. Eminem was the first rapper to win an Oscar for a song. Hmmmm. If it wasn’t for Dj Jazzy Jeff and Fresh winning the first Grammy for Rap then perhaps they would have given that to 3rd Bass

We really can't compare Ice and Eminem. Ice was popping long before people knew what he looked like. When you did see him he was fly. The dancing is what sent him over the edge because Dancing is one part of hiphop you can't fake. They was playing Ice ice baby in the hood but I've never heard not 1 person drive down the street bumping an Eminem song.

@@jeezy8360 That’s not true. You’re comparing modern rap with raps back then.

I think that they marketed him that way on purpose. They didn't want us to know what he looked like at first. But Ice Ice Baby used to be slapping in every hood in America This can't even be debated

You can’t compare because Eminem is a different type of rapper than vanilla ice was in terms of lyrics and in terms of showman ship Vanilla Ice was a dancer on top of a rapper Eminem was just a rapper but he was a showmanship in terms of being off-the-wall
