How much does living in a van cost? In this video, I break down the cost of living solo in the van for the last two months, and include my fixed and variable costs.
* Each person's costs may be different - depending on your budget and lifestyle. I'm simply sharing what I have spent over the last two months of solo female van life. (and also what I saved when I moved out of a house).
The costs are broken down into these 7 categories:
Food (groceries)
Fuel (diesel for the van)
Accommodation (paid campsites)
Van costs (fixed costs like registration & insurance, and variable costs like repairs)
Alcohol
Eating out/takeaways
Miscellaneous.
Figures given are in Australian dollars, but I also give a conversion to US Dollars, Euros and Pounds sterling.
How was your guess? Were you close? I actually guessed it to be a little less than it is. Oops!
When Nigel returns to the van in the next couple of weeks, we will do a video on what it's costing the two of us (and I already know it won't be a straight double my solo costs!)

Daily costs are relative to location. For example, in outback Queensland, NT & WA the cost of travel is higher due to distances between places. Food tends to be 20% + higher compared to populated coastal areas. As a single, I was spending on average $310 per week in outback Qld, where as in Victoria this has dropped to around $230 pw. Budgets help keep costs down too. eg; Excluding dining out and takeaways, $10 a day for food works for me and free camping allows more dollars for activities.

Absolutely! The fuel price is so much higher in the outback too. We paid $2.05 a litre for diesel in Cape York.

There was a large variation when we were on the road, so that video will be a bit more in depth. This last 9 weeks has only varies around $20-30 a week

This was super informative! It was great to see the real cost breakdown, as my partner Brandi and I are preparing to go full-time on the road by spring next year, and we are starting to budget for what we will need. We are in the US, so the dollar conversion was awesome for us. Thank you for all the info!

You’re welcome Benjamin. My partner Nigel will be back from work next week and we will be hitting the road again in January. We will do another video on the costs of travelling as a couple as we already have three months of figures. A lot of your costs will be less - I think gas is about 30-40% cheaper in the US than Australia.

@@nigelandsueadventures awesome, looking forward to it! Good to know about the gas prices, hopefully the global prices stabilize for everyone soon!

I am American and "retired" doing pet/house sits on the side. My insurance is covered for health and meds. All figured before emergency savings and tithe I would spend about $850/mth including fuel here in Washington State.

@cjkennedy1246
@cjkennedy1246 2 года назад
@@nigelandsueadventures I only get to travel for the sits. I have lived tiny for many years after my husband died in December 2010. I didn't have a car until 2014. Went from place to place - about 14 moves including a stint in my car. But I do love to travel and have traveled both in and out of the US. I currently live in a fifth-wheeler trailer. Looking forward to doing a van conversion. Waiting on God's timing and provision.

Great video, very interesting. Looking forward to the van costs. So pleased that I found your channel, giving me the inspiration to start van life. May need to get back to Australia first though, unless I go for it completely and try driving to Australia from the UK 🤪

Awesome a lot less than I would think..I hope to have a van very soon to convert but it's not going to be for full time living..but the fixed costs just for it to sit under my carport waiting for adventures ..won't be too bad..I will living on fixed income but want to factor a camper van and trips into my funds

I actually thought that it would be a fair bit more, about $450-$500 a week. Mind you, our booze bill would be somewhat higher 😂

@@nigelandsueadventures Ha, my wife is as much a soak as I am. We have not decided yet on a small caravan (4 metre ish with an ATM of around 1600kg so that my Outlander can tow it) or a Class B van. Either version will have lots of solar and batteries so that we can have a little luxury. Hope to see you on the road sometime soon.
