That's one of the best heavy duty awnings I've seen, and that roof rack + tent is sick, it's not as convenient as those simple pull out awnings so I wouldn't be too happy in the heavy rain but if I want something as ageless as the van I haven't seen anythning better.
I was driving new years eve day and a silver later model syncro turned in front of me. They slowed and looked at me (in my 74 bug) an I watched them ! It was one of those fun VW moments !

I just watched the videos for the VW california series and the God's honest truth is this VW Syncro the only thing it's missing between that and the brand new high-dollar vw's is the stove and the fridge and the God's honest truth is you can toss that in there on your own the Synchro is just amazing and if I had the opportunity I'd be driving one of these things in a heartbeat
You don't need to pull the knobs to put it in awd. Syncro's are already in awd. The two knobs are for: right one usually rear differential lock, center one usually a decoupler to take it out of awd. I had the same exact same '87 van including color except mine had the full factory sunroof. Great vehicles and you're right they will go anywhere.
Yes. Unfortunately, Volkswagen stopped exporting their camper vans to the USA in 2003. This is partly the reason older VW camper vans sell for a high price. They're getting harder to find.

Patric, hello there I had zero there ever was a 4X4 model, of that van,,it seems to have a better heating system, than the older. Air cooled systems, what does he do for a potty? any small refrigerator?. So it seems to be able to sleep 4 with,the pop up tent, overall, quite a vehicle, was it petrol, or diesel ?.... The guy that replied saying he will never get $26k for this synchro obviously doesn’t know anything about these. I’d say on the west coast he’s looking mid 40k if he throws in the sink the sink and stove kit. I’d pay 26k anytime. Please let me know if it’s available.
When I was going to buy my Syncro, there was just one decision - to own it now or never. It's probably easier to find a living unicorn than this beauty! :-D
Your obviously not familiar with Synchros. This van without any bells and whistles he’s put on will sell for over 30k in one day. They only made 18,000 synchros and are very sought after
