Milledgeville/Central State Hospital was once the largest mental hospital in the world with over 10,000 patients. I’m in my early 50’s and know people a little older than me who were patients there at one time. Know at least one person who had electric shock “treatment” there. Those of us in Georgia of a certain age understand when someone said “send you to Milledgeville” what that meant. Many families sent relatives there and completely abandoned them.
Ga native here and I was about to post the same thing. It was a common response when someone said something crazy that you would drop them off in Milledgeville.😅
Just to tell you how bad it was. In the late '50's My Uncle w/ Epilepsy was sent there in a straight jacket for months. When finally a new young Doctor came in and said "this man is FINE,, He has Epilepsy, He's NOT Insane" release him NOW! And they did. Thank GOD for that young Doctor.. I went w/ my Dad which was his younger brother to bring him back home. That place was brutal and uncontrolled ! The people that worked at that Mental Hospital will burn in HELL for the pure torture they put the patients thru..
In the 70s I went to college in Milledgeville. I sang with a couple of friends, one of whom lived with his parents in one of those abandoned houses as his dad worked at Central State. We used to rehearse there occasionally going over occasionally and sing for some of the patients. My attitude about mental illness began to change from that point. Feel like, with this video, I have visited a very happy chapter of my life. Thank you.
I live in Small town in Georgia about 30 Minutes away from Milledgeville, and there actually used to be a funny saying back when the mental asylum was still being used. Whenever someone said “Hey, I’m going to Milledgeville.” Someone would always respond with “Careful, they might keep you!” Just a fun fact.
I grew up not to much farther in Forsyth, Ga and whenever I would act up my parents would always say "you don't want us to send you to Milledgeville do you"
Yes, “send you to Milledgeville” was used as an insult. Having a learning disability, I was picked on and told that in my younger years. I had a cousin who lived in Milledgeville not at the state hospital but in the town on the north side. I think that Hospital could be used today because people with problems could get help there. Another town you could check out is Warm Springs Georgia. President Rosevelt started going to Warm Springs has a treatment for polio. Now there is a school there for people with disabilities. Also, they have a hospital for people with different disabilities like in a wheelchair. I went there in the early 90's and I loved being there.
What most ppl dont realize is Millidgeville was actually the original capitol of Georgia. Also on the grounds around back is a cemetery you can go to..... would've been cool to see you took a walk thru it. Also the asylum is said to be very haunted and a couple times a year a group host a walk thru. Loved the beach.....the sounds of waves, gentle wind and nature is so relaxing.....as the sounds of rain and thunder. Be safe on hne roads 🙏🕊️💜
I'm having a pretty stressful few weeks ahead of me. I quit my job, I'm moving to a new city, taking steps in a new direction to achieve my dream not too dissimilar to yours, Trent. This video calmed my anxiety, even if just for a short while, and for that I am thankful. Keep doing what you do :)
Same. Found out my Dad has Cancer a few weeks ago & my mum was diagnosed with a heart condition😢 I wish you all the best & pray you find your happiness❤
This was my first video I’ve watched. I went home and told my wife about it, and now we’re hooked. We turned on our smart tv in our bedroom, boiled water for tea, and laid back and watched 5 or 6 of your videos. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Really makes me think about how complicated life seems to be and how it doesn’t need to be that way. It’s not often that we see people who are comfortable with silence at all, and this man is truly living the dream for someone who can enjoy their own company and not have to fill the empty spaces with noisy chaos.
It's important to choose what u want to do with YOUR life , as in choose anything literally. Sum people jus don't belong in the modern loop , drive on brotha 🔥🔥🔥🔥 livinnnn it
I grew up on those my grounds from birth till marriage. My Father was the Psychiatrist over the long term care division. Those houses, there are MANY more, are the staff houses. Some were converted to assisted living for the patients. Most all have been sold to one man that is "supposedly" rehabing them to rent out. My brother tried to buy the house he and I grew up in and never even had a returned call. All the trees my Daddy planted, flattened. It is so sad and we need mental health BADLY and there is the campus- just being left to ruin- at least rehab it for homeless Veterans. There is still a Georgia War Vet. Unit I think.
I actually live in Milledgeville, that place is right down the street from where I live, they have haunted tours at the hospital complex (which you can find on the events section of Facebook) and they just sold that whole neighborhood of houses a few months ago.
I am always saddened when I see places like this abandoned and standing empty. In this age of homelessness, it could house so many people, and at least make amends for the wrongs that were done there. Great video!
I would rather live with ghosts than in a tent in winter. Anyway, there are ways to help them along., and new energy would help to disperse the old.@@GhostStalkerActual
@@GhostStalkerActualnothing can happen outside the normal laws of cause and effect we all recognize..no ghosts, no magic, no miracles, no witches, no afterlife, just this.
Part of my clinical nurse's training was spending a day AR Central State Hospital and it was horrific! The thing he we saw still sticks in my mind and heart!
Even after watching your channel for the past few years, I am still blown away with the amount of effort you put into obtaining different shots. I truly consider you to be the GOAT of van life content. Thanks for the entertainment over the years man.
I live in South Georgia - my parent & grandparents experienced a verrrry paranormal event back in the 1950’s/60’s while traveling to Milledgeville (the VA hospital) missing time but also time dilation
Just discovered your YT channel. Two years ago, before he died, my partner took me to Milledgeville. He owned 130 acres not far from there. We toured the grounds as you did and it was eerie and sad, but also it held a very special meaning for me. When I was about 9 years old, we got a phone call from my Grandmother. My Step Grandad had been committed to the insane asylum for several years and we suddenly got this call that he had died. No real cause of death was ever given. I had wondered about milledgeville and his death, for years. After the trip there with Stephen, I had more questions than answers, but at least now the far away place where they sent him, is no longer a memory without a picture. It was a very haunting but beautiful place when I went there. And watching your video reminded me of one of the last days that Stephen and I spent together. Keep doing these videos, because you don't know whose lives you touch with these trips:-)
This is my first video of yours, great work all around bro. One idea I had at the end seeing you warming up that meal using your oven is that you should consider a stove top pressure cooker and use the "pot in pot" method to heat using steam. It is extremely fuel efficient and it's great for cooking in general. I've used mine when camping and just set it some coals from the fire and not even used gas. Anyways, thanks for the video can't wait to check the others out!
I saw the title and I said to myself... I bet it's Milledgeville... That or it was going to be south-side Macon. I've lived here for most of my life and man, let me tell you, time has not been kind to the central GA area. I've been up to that asylum and man it really is like something out of a horror movie - and when I had to go up there it was a dark and stormy night too - I swear to God the only thing it was missing was that classic streak of lightning and some thunder.
Dude your videos are so amazing I love to watch them dude. My dad passed away last year, I just had a baby 2 months ago, my wife is a stay at home mom and I work 55-60 hours a week to make ends meet. On top of that I am full time in online school getting my degree. Even with that craziness going on I set time aside and I watch your videos on my lunch breaks everyday at work, I try to break it up until you upload again so I don’t binge it all at once! These videos are a great breather for me man. There’s lots of people I’m sure with different situations that find solace in your uploads. I truly believe you enjoy what you do and make these videos for you, that radiates to all of us and affects us in so many ways. Thank you again my man, I hope when you see the support we give you it makes it all worth it for you. You never owed any of us anything yet you make these videos and share them to the world. We love you!
Very interesting... I was a student nurse in the 1960s. Part of our psychiatry rotation was to study patients at Central State Hospital. Several nursing schools in GA sent their students there for a quarter. During the week, we actually stayed in the building with patients on floors above and below us. Other weekends we wenthome on Friday and came back on Sundayevening.. The houses were doctors and other staffs homes. We actually helped with EST (Electric Shock Treatments) The stories we could tell!!!
That would have been interesting. I did my psych rotation at a small facility near Phoenix that seemed to be more catered (not the right word) to treating depression and behavioral disorders. Although before our first day there I earned the respect of our instructor who overheard me telling the other student; there’s no reason to be afraid, these people are just like us but are having problems in their life. I was also a Nurse Extern at the county hospital and had to sit with residents from Arizona State Hospital when they needed medical care. I particularly remember 2 gentleman with the same name with schizophrenia diagnosis. They were different as night and day. Would also have to observe (sit with) patients who’d harmed themselves. I learned to be very empathetic
Huge employer CSH Milledgeville. Decent living wages with benefits and path to advancement. Emergency rooms struggle nowadays to find a bed in mental health crisis units. A suicidal patient was discharged back to home after vascular surgeon stitched the wound. I worked at the med/surg hospital. So many services were provided at the Culver Kidd building.
Why where there so many crazy people back then ? Seems like there’s a lot of these places But honestly, they appear to be repurposed and may have been universities or even plantation/ factory towns.
I've lived in GA all my life, and my great-grandfather got shock treatments in the 1950s at Milledgeville. My husband and I visited the abandoned grounds about 6 years ago. There's a place where they have rows of small grave markers for some of the hundreds of people who died there. I'm an amateur photographer, and as I was taking photos of the grave markers, I swear I heard laughter in the air. Creepy vibes and most likely haunted place. One question - when we went, there were patrols on the grounds to make sure no one was entering the buildings, as they are unsafe. Were the patrols still there when you went?
Growing up in Georgia as a child in the 1970s, being sent to Milledgeville from misbehaving was often used as a threat. Whatever you do, please don’t send me to Milledgeville!
First thing I thought of when I seen that place. Mom would tell me if you don't straighten up I'm going to send you to Milledgeville. Even the school principal would mention it when there was a problem student.
I absolutely love your videos. You put so much extra time and effort into making them the best. All the different angles, entrance shots, exit shots, all of it. You are by far my favorite RU-vidr. After finding your channel I've introduced my wife and kids and we all have sat down and binge watched. We love Millie, she is beautiful and sweet and the best camping companion. We are getting our first bigger bred dog(boxer) next month, we are getting a girl and my wife and kids decided they want to name her Millie. She's going to be our camping buddy. We look forward to your new videos and can't wait to see what the next adventure is you take us on. Thank you Trent and Millie for allowing us to tag along in your life. Till next time. The Savage Family
I absolutely love that you’ve got the whole family watching my videos. That is so awesome!!! Also!!! Your naming your new pup Millie?!? Ahhh!!! Millie and I are so honored. ❤️❤️❤️ thank you for your support and sharing this with me!
Please be careful out there, Trent. There are bad people and wild animals that could attack you and Millie. My friend and I just prayed for your safety. We love you kiddo, stay safe! ❤❤❤❤
My grandmother lived at that hospital half her adult life, due to they used to send people there who had Parkinson’s, seizures, what-not. She endured electric shock treatments here & HATED THIS PLACE.
This place is what the paranormal shows do research on. Very interesting. And Millie running on the beach with her own camera on back was hilarious, another brilliant day. Thankyou !!
Your video popped up on my U-Tube feed tonight for the first time and I had to watch it because of your subject. I was a student nurse at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta in the middle 60's and we did our psych rotation there. We spent 2 months there. It was very much a locked down facility. We as students were escorted to our wards and our classrooms every day. All wards were locked and we had a guard with us at all times. I am now 79 so I don't have a lot of memories there but I do remember how sad a place it was. You really took meback in time today. I subscribed to your videos.
I just got home from work. What do I see??? A 39 minute video from Trent! You have no idea how it makes my day!!! Thank you for your (as always) amazing videos! ❤ I freaking LOVE them!
Loved watching your interaction with Millie...She's super cute and full of energy...The beach visit , you used to go to, as a child, was beautiful to see...A few years back, I visited the family Bach and had experienced quite a bit of mixed feelings, when I visited it, as an adult...I wondered if you had similar emotions...Your research on the abandoned buildings was quite surprising because with everything that went on in that place, it did take quite a while, before it was understandably closed down...Things back in the day was just proof, how mental health, was dealt with and was sooooo wrong, on soooo many levels...I see your water system is back, up and running...Anyway young Trent...As usual, look forward to your next adventure, but until then...Take care and safe travels.
Ha, i recognize good ole Beaufort SC as the last spot you stayed at, the Sands beach. And i recognized the boat ramp by Harbor Island. To get there you actually had to drive less than a couple hundred feet from my old house. Small world lol
I had an Aunt there in the 60s we thought she was crazy til she went there for bout a yr and came back she was really crazy then they would give them electrical shocks
Btw…I live about 1 hour and 45 minutes away from Milledgeville. We use to say “if you ain’t crazy when you get to Milledgeville (the state hospital), you will be when you get out.” And believe me, it proved to be true on MANY occasions.
Northeast Georgia Mountains. and North Carolina. Visit old gold mines, abandoned moon shine stills. Water falls, fishing, hiking. I camp were no one goes. 10 haunted houses Chapel Hill NC. Creeks that sound like rivers and much more. I enjoyed your video. Thank You
I lived in chapel hill during college, and then fell 100 feet in the mountains just outside of Franklin NC, a mile into Georgia. I don’t know about the haunted houses of chapel hill, but that’s not surprising.
You fell 100 ft. You have been blessed. I fell down Blackrock Mountain in 1994. I was riding my street bycical got to the top, then started down when I fell off at the first turn back.I don't now the ft but I ended at the bottom. I've been Blessed over and over. Have a safe and happy journeys. Your companion is the best kind.I Love all critters Exploring is my favorite activity. I'm in Clayton Ga.
The cool thing to do when I lived there was to swim in the lake right where the warm water comes out of the power plant. I camped in my suv right on the bank.
The white building is old. It survived Sherman’s march through Georgia. It was closed because it was mandated to place patients in community housing. This was nationwide. I think it closed in 2010
You look like you're having a lot of fun it's really cool the biggest smile I had on my face is when you and Millie were playing with the stick at the beach there's nothing like the love we share with our pets
I remember when that area of Milledgeville was more active. Also when they closed it. Quite certain those bldgs are full of asbestos so I doubt any filming done there.
Beautiful video as always. I just feel at real ease and peace when I watch you and Millie, Trent. Thank you for bringing so much joy to so many all over the world.
I live close to one of the few remaining State hospitals here in Massachusetts. They served a purpose. I get the fact that sometimes they ran into problems. But as we see more crazies
If you think that's wild, try Pennsylvania, OH and a few other states along the eastern seaboard "abandoned towns". Also a few places in the Dessert West Coast. Fun, fun!!!
Optional boondocking site that is safe for an overnight stay is a large hospital parking lot. You can go stealth there and use the hospital bathrooms during visiting hours. Just don't announce your presence.
The Milledgeville property has such a strange history and the buildings are really interesting. I was lucky enough to do a photo shoot inside a few of the buildings. My profile pic was taken in the white building you showed and we also shot in the prison building that has a tunnel that is partially underground. Now I'm inspired to do a video about the experience. Thanks for the inspiration!
i like it when youre clean camping, keeping inside of the van neat and organized..i have watch a lot of dirty van campers like stuffs are everywhere like i cant even watch the whole video how dirty and messy they are living in a van..
Beautiful video. Thank you! Fort DeSoto in St. Petersburg Florida where I grew up was built the same time as the fort you visited. Even has the same huge concrete construction. Some of the buildings have fallen into the sea, so massive half submerged ruins on the beach and in the water.
When I was a child, if you misbehaved, you were threatened with being sent to Milligville. Everyone in my area of Georgia knew about that place, and it scared us kids into good behavior. 😅
New subscriber here. This is a beautiful video. I have lived in Georgia at least 45 of my 61 years and have yet to see some of the sights you visited. Now I have something for my to do list! I look forward to watching more of your videos!
I live in Effingham County, Georgia. Never heard of this place. Now im curious. I have a granddaughter that starts college this fall in Milledgeville! Maybe I will visit her and explore these grounds!
I live in NE AL i. the foothills of the Appalachian mtn’s., appx. nine mi’s. from the AL - GA state line. i’ve heard jokes all my life…”u better quit that foolishness, u’ll end up in Mlg’ville, boy!” but, I also know folks that were sent there - never returned. scary man! great show @Trent!
Just found your channel lastnight and I gotta say man, you do a really really good job, I subscribed, and I will be watching from here on out, great job and awesome dog too, I have 5 🤣
I lived in Milledgeville for close to a decade, between undergrad and masters programs at Georgia College. When we were in our freshman year, we would sneak into some of the buildings and take pictures. A girl I dated scooped a vinyl recording of irregular heartbeats. Super creepy. The facility is still 10% operational. Small clusters of people live around it, as well. There’s also an organization, I think Friends of Central State, that work to renovate certain buildings and making more of a presence there. Hell, I remember a church still being opened on the grounds. The facility is actually a 10 minute drive to Milledgeville proper. Hardly abandoned and filled with college kids during semesters. I ended up working at the public library there for a couple years and bartending cheap college dives for much longer than that. Picked up a lot of knowledge about the history of the grounds, horror stories of mistreatment of patients. It’s a sad, not too uncommon story of the neglect our government had (and still have in some ways) administering care to those in need. I honestly didn’t watch this video. Sort of turned me off when it was stated to be a completely abandoned city at the beginning. I get it’s for making a certain narrative, great for generating interesting sounding content, but it also paints a bad picture of a community that’s trying to stay afloat outside of being just a creepy college town. Just wanted to share another perspective.
What's even sadder than the decline in the quality of treatment for the patients who lived there is the fact that enormous numbers of people NEED to be institutionalized in places like Milledgeville, but we shut those places down. So now where do those people "live"? In cardboard boxes on the side of the roads, defacating and dropping their needles on the street in California and panhandling in the warmer states. Because a lot of people were mistreated in these facilities, we decided to just put them all out there on the street where they are "better off". Improve the conditions in the institutions? Nah. smh. Like others commenting here, I also grew up hearing people speak of being "sent to Milledgeville". It was a schoolyard insult. I heard about how horrible the conditions were. But if you want to see the conditions they live in now, go to San Francisco and Los Angeles and look under the overpasses.
