Cooking traditional food for a communal feast held in Iatukwei village, Tanna Island, Vanuatu. The slow food workshop was part of a "Kastom Skul," under the direction of Jean-Pascal Wahe. Languages heard in the video are Nafe (Kwamera), a language of Tanna Island, and Bislama, the national language of Vanuatu.
The narrator, renowed "kastom" expert Numalin Mahana, explains how "slow food" is made in accordance with traditional practices that avoid the negative environmental impacts of much of today's fast foods, which are fast to make but also fast to destroy your life. All traditional ingredients, tools, utensils, and dishes are grown locally or sourced from the forest, which serves as everything from a supermarket to a hardware store to hospital for the people of Tanna. Numalin describes how she receives "unwritten messages" by communing with nature, the mountain, plants, and water, and she applies this knowledge to create healthy foods that restore the human body and ecological balance.
