Variable or Dynamic partitioning OS in Tamil
To overcome some of the difficulties with fixed partitioning an approach known as dynamic partitioning was developed.
Advantage of dynamic partitioning
1. No internal fragmentation
2. No limitation of process size
3. No restriction on degree of multiprogramming.
Disadvantage of dynamic partitioning
1.External Fragmentation
2. Difficult implementation
Compaction - is a process in which the free space is collected in a large memory chunk to make some space available for processes.In memory management, swapping creates multiple fragments in the memory because of the processes moving it and out. Compaction refers to combining all the empty spaces together and processes.
compaction is the solution for external Fragmentation.
Placement Algorithm
1.Best fit - Chooses the block that is chosest in size to the request.
2.First fit - Begins to scan memory from the beginning and chooses the first available block that is large enough.
3.Next fit - Begins to scan memory from the location of the last placement, and chooses the next available block that is large enough.
