It is marketed as a “commercial film” but it is a big slap on the face when movie makers and actors feel like they can get away by giving us just a hit song, a fight sequence and comedy scenes that are merely used as fillers. It’s extremely frustrating to see leading stars taking such undue advantage of the loyal fans.

As a huge Vijay fan, this is exactly what I felt too. How long is Vijay going to use his old movie references? How many more "I'm waiting?" Tbh, Vijay was overacting in many scenes! Ugh! Few scenes had humor, agree, but still. Suddenly, there's human trafficking lol just to have a Vj fight. Like, seriously? Where's the story dude? Kaththi and Thuppaki had serious story and that's why they are Vj's best films so far. Why can't the director/Vijay himself get it 😭 I'm so tired watching movies like Beast and Varisu. Actors do these movies as they are quick cash grabbers. Reviews mean nothing to these kind of family sentiment movies. A large portion of family audience will set the boc office on fire. I am in no way encouraging these movies, but they sure mint very good money
“Vijay was overacting in many scenes” you guys found this only now? The last movie he was serious in his work fully was in ghilli. After that he forgot the skill of acting. Kaththi , thupakii all worked for the story and screenplay. He stopped taking movies seriously long ago. He is in now only to make money, evident from the news abt his salary 100crs, 120crs per movie.

I wonder why stars like Vijay, who is at the peak of stardom- are not ready to do films with a better approach to their style rather than the platitudinous stuff that is over catered. Audience are ready to accept unique, valuable content and appreciate it, regardless of its flaws. Films like Vikram are a great example to showcase that content is the quintessential factor that determines its success.
Kamal and Chiyaan Vikraam and even Rajni Sir are willing to experiment and subvert. But Vijay who I also love is not as willing to upset the apple cart of his fans.

As someone mentioned in the comments why stars like Vijay going back to this old format instead he can make content driven films. I just wanna add Vikram is such a wake up call for Tamil cinema to push its boundary. You can make a multi-starrer movie, where the protogonist literally becomes the "hero" in the interval. This could not be possible back then. I appreciate Loki and obviously Kamal to green lit this, It was a brave attempt, that got paid off in a huge scale. Those who say you have to cater these audience the "masala" film, should think that the same audience celebrated "Vikram". It's all bullshit. I like Vijay, he can make commercial films to talk about his political agenda once in a while. But for the rest of the times, he has every potential to make content and character driven movies. And he can literally turn the Tamil cinema around. Hope he does that even after Loki's film.

This is how a review should be done without "insulting" the movie team. I like V Studio Kodangi too; his sarcasm never misses. 😂 This is my honest opinion on Varisu and Thunivu, I felt both movies were "meh". Some parts I really liked but as an OVERALL experience, both delivered nothing more than watching the "stars" shine on screen. Thunivu had a great setup and plot points (banks scams, mutual fund, heists) but none of em' were strongly memorable. Varisu stayed true to its genre and felt like full of fan service, no-brainer entertainment, but due to the series of cliched/ generic events which we've already seen in past films (one word: predictable),it offered nothing at end of the treatment. This time, both films were equally good and bad. I couldn't decide which one to prefer.
I think vikram is the wake up call to every big stars that you need to do something different,you don't need to be in the every frame of your film,yes we can't change the industry all of a sudden but Vijay took the first step with master,i don't know why he's trying to do a film like varisu,lets wait for thalapthy 67❣️❣️❣️

As he said in his interview with BR, It's ok for vamshi to avoid reading reviews after release. But atleast if he spent some time watching the successful films of tamil or malayalam industries (2021-2022) he shouldn't have come up with this in 2023. General Audience wait for his movies because of this only, it has a swag which everyone like, and once in a year he do a movie. We have lot of other stars to do class film, let him be an entertainer with dance fun and action 🤷♂️

Been following BR since The Hindu - Friday Review column where he writes a movie review almost every week. The class he has is unmatched till date by any other critic. Vijay needs to go through a major transformation. That’s it!
"Not using vijay's potential/ we need more focussed films/ these are just random scenes put together incoherently" there are still many people who throng to theatres just to relax without any focus and feel entertained without using much of attention span. Film watching is a relaxation not a classroom experience for them. I think they still form the majority and there is a transition happening from that group to intense film viewers. This film will cater to the first kind. Director has definitely used vijay's potential very well for this genre... His body language and cute gestures. Its just that latter group view acting only when the actor does an intense sad scene/ action scene. The problem lies in the perspective.

Huge Vijay fan, just returned from cinema. First half was largely everything im looking for but 2nd half is awful. This movie didnt need any fight scenes should have been full comedy/family drama. Songs are excellent, Vijay dancing was also best Ive seen from him in awhile, Rashmika as an actress wasted, prakash raj wasted, suman wasted. The 2 brothers of Vijay are 2D. It was hard to believe the relationship between the brothers or the father is real. Only the mothers relationship is believable. I wish they stop adding fight scenes fir the sake of fight scene- they ended up looking silly. It was bad in Sachin, its alot worse in this movie. Overall comedy with Yogi babu, Songs and Vijay/mother scenes are good, rest not upto the mark. I wish Vijay / producers would give directors freedom to make the movie they want rather then chinging script / adding random scenes and blaming "thats what fans want"... rant over i think 😅
The biggest problem here is this movie has been made as a typical telugu movie in Tamil language.There are lots or telugu movies like these..The director copied many telugu movies and made one movie..this movie will not run in telugu also as audience are bored of watching same old stuff..They need content which is lacking here.

Stars like Vijay & Ajith are beneficiaries of the low standards they set. After one ordinary movie, if they even make a slightly better one, it's celebrated. As long as their fans and we as an audience don't demand better, we will continue to get only these kind of movies.
I believe Vijay is passionate with his outings and as performer he tries to bring in new flavors. I wouldn't call him an actor. He is a performer. And he is always trying to improve his acting also with each outing. He is a great performer who i believe has the aura to captivate people whenever he appears on the screen or the delivery with his dialogues and on liners. But that ain't gonna help him forever if the story is weak and the other characters around him are weak,even his character is written weak. See for example KGF works because everything that i mentioned above is well written. Rocky Bhai is well written,jagadish,kathiresan are well written characters. The characters standalone. Oflate thats a big miss. JD is well written grey character who gets screwed in the end in the name of stardom. Action should have a strong 'why' if not it doesn't work. Even though the action is very much limited in varisu. It didn't work. If only the directors can read this comment section,they will understand that audience are sensible enough to accept a strong hero character but not stupid enough to accept them with poor outdated writing.
If I have a significant complaint about something in Varisu, it would be all the stunt sequences; nothing was realistic or lifelike. The stunt sequences were not suitably designed.
Vamshi as he mentioned it's a commercial family entertainment, i think it is very well worked for family audience and it has ability to run long race in theatres. Many people thought movie will be below average and many didn't trusted vamshi. But he utilised Vijay very well for commercial movie. It's good to see this kind of Vijay after long time. Though the movie feel average for some Vijay fans and non Vijay fans but for them thalapathy 67 is on the cards. I will say varisu is super Hit film and not average or below average. This movie is far better than films like beast, bairava,Jilla.

The characters felt so one-dimensional and Vijay is like Superman minus the costume and powers. Also I don’t understand why they have to include a “message” in every Vijay film. I’d rather watch a film where he plays a flawed well-written character than a guy who saves the day in every frame.
The people I felt for most in the movie were Sarathkumar and Prabhu...from Suryavamsam, Nattamai, Chinna Thambi and Parambarai (yes even Parambarai) to this. And I have to disagree with BR. Vijay looked haggard in the movie, his makeup and wig were atrocious, he looked too old for Rashmika. He seems to have lost his charm. And without any explanation for his antagonistic behaviour towards his dad, I just felt "what a spoilt brat". A badly written Mahesh Babu movie in which Vijay acted with an Allu Arjun wig.
I think theeran athigaram is the perfect blend of commercial and content. But H Vinod himself struggling with Ajith. Both Vj and Ajith should leave this mass masala siht. They can try what big Malayalam stars doing

Yesterday i watched varisu, it was a totally disaster, cleashe story, repetition of thalapathy's previous movies and that was so cringe, chewing gum scene, iam waiting, vaathi coming spoof scene etc. There was so much scenes like this I don't know what is actually happen in thalapathy script selection ? there is a scene with Yogi babu having a Cringe expression on his face when Vijay says something about Rashmika. That expression from YB pretty much sums up the movie 😃
As a vijay fan I will always be bias for his movies. His mass moments, dance and comedy. So I really enjoyed the movie. But if I think as a reviewer you can find alot of faults in the story. So it's the perspective that matters. If you want to review a movie then this movie has its faults. But as a fan i missed this thalapathy for a long time. And this is a nice movie to give before a Loki movie. If he acts only in that type of movie then as fan we will be bored too.
I don't know why everybody are extremely critical about Varisu. Varisu first half I was in the cinemas the whole theatre enjoyed it and we our family enjoyed it and the second half was racy and good. There were loads of surprises that Vamshi has created for Vijay, and they worked amazingly well. Vijay looks sharp and handsome and has done a fantastic job. Sarah Kumar and Jayasuddha amma have did a great job. I didn't find any graphic glitch it was very minimal, songs were great to dance was great everything was good. 4.5/5

The focus for Vijay seem to be giving 2 movies a year and not leverage his infinite audience pool to give honest blockbuster entertainers... I also feel for Vijay, coz his experiments like Puli and this one failed not because he tried something new, but because these are badly written movies!

I watched Varisu last evening & as I was stepping out of the theatre & seeing a very happy, fully entertained audience have realized that BR should not review these brand of movies anymore & quite clearly his views are far removed from what the masses love to watch. The problem with BR & a few similar critics is that they seem to not be able to comprehend what the audience expects from a huge star & nor do these people appreciate how difficult it is for directors like Vamshi Paidipally to create content that entertains the masses. If this was easy to deliver, in the same manner BR speaks almost nonchalantly of this genre, we would have every star movie doing so well & the industry making lots of money. Tamil cinema is blessed to have superstars like Vijay & Ajith who are able to command strong numbers at the theatres even in an OTT driven eco-system, by their mere star power. These stars are the people the industry at large should be thankful to as the concept of theatres & entertainment remains relevant thanks to them. Directors who are able to comprehend this mass hysteria these stars create & serve up content that stirs the pot so beautifully each time while celebrating what the star is all about, are extremely special & should be nurtured & respected. I watched the Vamsi interview with BR pre- release & was so happy to see he is so sure footed about his craft & how he understands the huge responsibility he has while handling a movie like this & a star like Vijay. I came out thoroughly entertained & today Vijay is amongst the most talented mass superstars we have in the country now. How well the director has ensured the hysterical fans have their whistle worthy moments is something that's very special indeed. I understand now Lokesh Kanagaraj is filming Vijay's next & I'm very excited as I wait to see how he delivers in his own inimitable style.

Being a typical masala film you cant expect more , End of the day you come to theatre for wholesome entertainer. Today audience watch all types of movie so I definitely feel Varisu is winner when the dust settles after few days family audience will come more . 90's vijay I liked and slight touch was there in movie. I disagree strongly for the first time with u sir.. yes it was an old story but did it manage to entertain the masses is the question here.. it is a festival season and people want to feel light hearted n thats wat the movie promised n it did deliver.. Vijay's mannerisms brought us back to vaseegara decade n many felt refreshing tbh.. i agree about the villain part, but it is actually just the subplot to move the emotions. Movie wasn't great but definitely entertaining!
I saw varisu today.. the reason i went to watch vijay is to see him. We get to see once a year, just to see his swag, screenpresence, that aura,just to see heroisim... But on film point if view, as a true fan..is this enough??..doing a family role is all 5 yrs back stories.now as an calibered actor like vijay we look for something big..this is the time..vikram movie is a wake up call..i was wondering the money spent for this family story..theu could have put this effort in preparing writing a strong script..that punch feel effect... Seeing film companion interviews itself we will understand which level of thinking cinema pple need. But poor tamil cinema lovers ,vijay lovers ,pple who likes ..im waiting,kathi style fight, cup mukyam bigile dialogue,reference of old movie scene repetition, cringe love comedy n all has become a mixture for audience n happy for it.i wish vijay does a seriois love story with trisha in maniratnam direction, lokesh movie t67 is were i have hope.. only lokesh knows to pull it off.
