I have no problem with the prices of these new headsets. If we don’t have companies developing this we won’t move onto better and cheaper headsets in the future. Over time the price comes down and the hardware evolves. We should be praising these companies.

It is not important who can afford the xr4 and who can't. The important thing is that a new standard is being set and we get an outlook on what we can expect a few years from now. Just like you had the expensive aero a few years ago and now we have an even cheaper and better Option with the crystal light.

I really don’t understand why some people get mad at the price of high end VR equipment, and by extension RU-vidrs who make content about them. It’s like getting mad at BMW and Mercedes for making expensive cars, and the people who drive them. A quest 3 or a Varjo XR4, it’s all VR and all good. I’m looking at purchasing an XR4, but if the only headset that was available was my old Rift S, I’d still be happy using that.

The high end is where the features start. They will make their way down to more affordable headsets in the future. Using high end allow us to see where the industry is going. Never Change.

Great video ! Always hard to record "throw the lenses videos" but it really intresting. CA in the crystal seems to be much more visible, is it in real live comparaison ? If yes, it's sad Pimax gave up on almalence.

I love the fact that the VR1 has round lenses. I hate the way my Aero lenses are designed. The XR4 lenses are designed the same way so I know that I won't like it.

Thank you for the through the lens footage. I can understand people being frustrated with the cost of everything nowadays but it is really odd to take it out on you. You don't decide the cost of these headsets. People don't get mad at car reviewers when they test out a 100k+ luxury/sports car. It's nice to get a good idea of what's possible even if we probably won't ever buy something that expensive. In the case of the XR-4, knowing how much of a difference in clarity/sharpness the 5K panels make can give some hints as to the potential of upcoming headsets like the Crystal Super or other unannounced ones. Anyway it's unfortunate to hear Varjo still hasn't completely figured out the lenses just yet. For the price they're asking, you'd expect the QA to be rock solid. Hopefully they get that sorted out quickly or they're going to have a tough time convincing consumers to put down that kind of money (which at $4k is already going to be challenging). I wish the 55 PPD mode didn't require eye tracking. It'd be awesome to see some through the lens shots of it to compare and get a better idea of the difference. By the way if you watch the MS/Asobo's FSExpo 2024 developer update presentation they touch on their enhancements to aerodynamics modeling with no limit on the number of surfaces modeled and how easy it is for existing planes to get updated. They showed one aircraft which they claim they were able to update in only an hour. They also said its optional. So with luck it hopefully should be too big of a fuss to port the planes over.

I really appreciate your reviews. I'm still on the fence of whether the XR-4 is actually worth the upgrade from the Aero. I fly mostly DCS...and with the 5090s around the corner....hmmmm

Does it have the same limited vertical fov like the varjo aero has which is the most disappointing aspect of my aero and makes me not want to use it?

the funny thing is now that I have a Pimax crystal light, those thru the lens do not do the headsets justice. looks way better

13:20 The fact that we as the community view the idea of eye tracking as something akin to a miracle is an indictment on Asobo. I love MSFS but they are so far behind where they COULD be in a lot of technical areas.

I mean, every bit of competition, even if in highest end of the market currently, trickles down to and benefits the mass market eventually. The high end competition as well as the lower/mass end of the competition spectrum winning is a win for all. It's not a zero-sum game. Something I tell people who are jealous of first class flyers on commercial airlines for example is how the first class buyers are actually subsidising the cost of econ seats. The 1st class guys are paying a hefty premium for floor space which results in cheaper tickets for econ seats. It's a win-win!

It's kind of ironic that one of the main selling point of this headset is the ability to use high resolution pass through... but there is no pass through. Great review!!! I'm really interested to see what the final product has in store for us. In other news, after watching the Microsoft presentation MSFS feels a bit dated and Asobo seems to be honoring their promise to make msfs 2024 a real sim. I bet that will be months worth of content of exploration and testing.

As a VR enthusiast (yes VR first, I only started playing MSFS after I already played lots of VR stuff and would probably never have tried it in 2d) a headset like this just seems too limited. 95% of my time in VR is playing games with roomscale movement so I cannot imagine going back to a cable. And if I was I'd probably be better suited getting the Crystal Light with a 5090 when it releases for the same price (or less probably) instead of this or the somnium :D Regarding the somnium, got my email to order this week (reserved a spot early). I had thought it should be around 2k, instead it is now 4,5k€ with taxes for ET, MR and HT. No thanks lol I was a meta hater but the Quest 3 converted me somewhat. If meta can keep improving the next generations as much as they improved the Q3 over the Q2, considering their pricing it simply is the best option for 99% of people. I appreaciate you showing off stuff like this, the future for VR is great. But I just don't see myself buying something like this at this price ever :D

Just watched Microsoft's and Asobos's presentation in Las Vegas. Not a word about VR, not a bloody word.

A commenter on a previous video referred to the Somnium VR1 pricing as "arrogant". To me that summed it up in a nutshell. A lot of people seem to be personally offended by the existence of high end products they can't afford. The sour grapes effect is quite strong.

Varjo just sent me a message, saying they increased the price to 5.995,00 Euro for the XR-4 from 3.995,00 Euro. I'm speachless.

P.S.: For me (like I said, VR not really FS enthusiast :D ) the biggest improvement in MSFS24 will be the actual missions to play. In MSFS2020 I usually just fly around a cool area and then get bored because I got nothing to do but in 24, especially stuff like firefighting and medevacs will be awesome if done well

My next headset if the VR1 and I am on the list ... I won't buy another Varjo product after they essentially abandoned the Aero IMO without even finishing it. They made everyone think local dimming was coming and it never did and never will, making the Aero terrible for night flying. The more open nature of the VR1 is much more appealing to me.

I'm so glad they make high end headsets its great some people have the money to buy the latest technology so thank you to them, the vr headsets R&D is heavy on cost. Be happy if you can't afford it because someone else is paying for the technology that will become cheaper in the future because of the past investment for others.

Probably drop the living and breathing cliche. The aircraft doesn't have a cylinder level simulation, so the concept only applies to A2A as far as I know.

In their defense Somnium VR1 is stupidly priced... an extra $400 just to get the clear version, just why? Wasn't that supposed to be a special limited edition anyways?
