Varnishing Too Soon - What happens? Experiment Results

I created a basic oil painting with stripes of colors and varnished different parts of it every month for a year. My goal was to find out if you really need to wait 6-12 months in order to safely varnish an oil painting. The results proved this to be true, but some of the results were rather surprising!

No cracking... just what I thought. I've never seen a painting crack from varnishing too soon.

Does it depend on the thickness of the paint?
@ryanoconnor7957
@ryanoconnor7957 3 года назад
@@roop298 I tried varnishing thick paint after 4 months and it didn't, I suspect the reason is because as the oil paint cures it absorbs oxygen actually slightly increasing its volume. But at the same time there is a little absorption into the dammar and painting substrate (eg. canvas) which seems to counteract that, and the paint doesn't really move. The dammar must be somehow flexible enough to adjust to the micro movements of the paint.

Hello, great experiment. But your paint is quite thin. I like thick paint. The art shops keep on saying you can use the medium that quickens the paint . I did find it made the color bleed and Miilky . I used acrylics when I studied fine arts but oils are lovely .

Samantha Navarro I use a wooden skull to place any unused paint from my palette. I put a really think layer of paint in the eye socket once and after almost 2 years it was still squishy. The paint had a completely dry surface but underneath it was still drying. It depends how thick you painted. Now when I make really think layers I used an impasto medium that helps the paint dry faster.

Should've applied the paints much thicker, at least on one side for the experiment. The paint application on your board is much thinner than most oil painting (impasto, multi layers, etc) which explains no cracking and faster drying.

I am so grateful for this carried out test! Although my recent works are heavy with impasto, so I could be waiting for almost 2 years to reach the point of applying final varnish (yet I will use synthetic resin instead or natural). I think only in archival qualities and less temporary gratification that could easily turn to woe. I have done and do myself some tests with good student quality paints to check their lightfastness, and I am surprised how well they perform! Another thing... Since you have varnished your test canvas with a low molecular natural resin, damar would crack, but not in this short period of time with a somewhat thin layer of paint underneath. It will also yellow over time, but that is 15+ years. You didn't have any cracks even though you have kept it in a harsh environment, for there wasn't any heavy impasto still oxidizing underneath the varnish that would have moved to tear it even in less than 12 months. Thank you again for the experiment, much appreciated, and stay safe!

There are a lot of variables that will influence drying to the touch vs drying completely. Oils dry by oxidation which means they react to oxygen and harden. Factors involved: humidity, how thin or thick you painted, fat over lean principles, earth pigments vs modern and synthetic, added medium, and substrate -meaning panel vs canvas. If you painted in layers using only thinner (gamsol) and no medium you would be theoretically creating a painting that would dry much faster than one where you used medium. If that said painting was created with earth pigments, and done in a dryer climate then you might have a painting you could possibly varnish without problems before 6 months. Everyone interested in painting should read Ralph Mayer’s “Artists Handbook of Materials and Techniques.”
@mariolastepaniuk4957

This makes sense to me too. This experiment is very helpful, however as you are saying there are many variables to take into consideration. And, thanks for the recommendation of Ralph Mayer’s “The Artists Handbook of Materials and Techniques.”, will look into it.

@@mariolastepaniuk4957 that book has a lot of good information. For one, learning the pigment codes and realizing the names of colors is arbitrary. Once you learn the codes you can flip over a paint tube and see what the pigment is. Like Burnt Sienna and Transparent oxide red are the same pigment.

Meh, I live in a arid desert and my oils behave wildly different from anything I've read online. Many people say oils take weeks to dry to touch but I've found that mine dry within a matter of days. If a thin layer is used with a drying agent the painting can even dry over night on summer days. Some of this stuff seems pretty relative.
@jennyc5132
@jennyc5132 4 года назад
Maybe only the top layer is dry? Just wonering as I use acrylics myself and sometimes they take quite a while to dry properly, also like liquid art.
@ericohm9474
@ericohm9474 4 года назад
@@jennyc5132 as far as I can tell mine are completely dry. I have a few paintings that I varnished maybe two or three days after painting the final layer and they haven't had any problems with cracking or crazing or anything. I've been keeping an eye on them as a little experiment for over a year now, still have a way to go but all of my experience with painting tells me that the drying process is relative to your environment and paint composition. I've had some liquid acrylics take days to dry and other craft acrylics that would literally dry within minutes of touching the canvas.
@ryanoconnor7957
@ryanoconnor7957 3 года назад
@@ericohm9474 you could try the nail test rule of thumb: push your fingernail into a thick part of your painting, when it stops leaving any kind of indentation it's half dry. Then wait that long again and varnish. I paint about as thin as in the video and my reds take longer than a week. Blues and greys take within a few days. Browns take overnight or sooner. But those times are all for "touch dry" where the brush wouldn't disturb them.

I believe cracking appears when an unstable or not fully dried paint is pulled by the varnish or topcoat which results in cracking.Another case is when the paint and topcoat are not compatible,thus creating cracking due again to pulling by the topcoat of the base paint.I am also surprised that no cracking appeared even on the 1 week old touch dry painting.i believe I need to test this myself on my works.Great Experiment!kudos!

What happens if you varnish a painting that has been drying for more than 8 months but decided to glaze the painting with Liquin fine detail liquid? After glazing it, should you wait another 6 months to apply the varnish or could you skip the varnish altogether. The glaze coat was rather thick. I wonder if anyone had experience with this situation...
