The only problem he got, really, is the car itself. There's no real way that a Type 35 Bugatti could've done anything against a Maserati V8RI, let alone a 6CM and an Alfa Romeo P3. Though that makes me think the race could've been a lot different if he raced his Alfa Romeo 308C instead...

Same here, the car being my absolute favourite. But, if it's any consolation for us, there weren't much footage of it because it had simply ran away from everyone. I remembered watching the livestream of the event when it came, and the car just mopped the floor with the rest of the grid at the qualifying session! The driver is lapping a 1:33s while the second fastest is 5 seconds slower!

Considering the crash/fatality rates of these cars in their time, are they A. being driven more conservatively today? B., driven better? C. Has tire technology made them more predictable and better handling and in turn, safer? D. IS their mechanical condition better with the near unlimited care and attention they receive from their current (wealthy) owners ? I would presume the track layout is considerably safer than the public streets they were so often raced upon...but all in all, they don't seem to fly off the track, ejecting drivers and rolling and tumbling as they seemed so prone to do back in their heyday...
@jcgabriel1569
@jcgabriel1569 6 лет назад
The drivers were mindful of the dangers that they could get if they had an accident so they try to keep some distance between the wheel of their car to the wheel of other drivers' car, You can see that around 2:02 when Mr. Majzub tried to pass Mr. Gans around the corner but swerved slightly to keep some distance between their cars. During the Goodwood Revival back in 2014 there was a crash at the race for these sort of cars. An Alfa romeo just like the one that won in this video collided with a backmarker and then rolled over. THE LACK OF SEATBELT actually helped as it allowed the driver to lean to the side of the cockpit preventing him from being trapped underneath the car. After the safety car period (of which there were none in the 30s) another accident occurred, one driver had run out of track and hit the tyre barriers at some speed, throwing the driver out of the car, just like what you will probably see in a 1930s Grand Prix accident footage. But seconds later, after he stopped sliding on the grass, the driver got up and ran to the marshalls at the side of the track as though nothing happened. You can actually see that since the channel had the full day coverage of the 2014 meet(because I had watched it here) So, it's the combination of the driver's awareness of what they're driving and modern safety helmets that's the answer. I'm not saying that those cars were deathtraps (I love them, especially those Alfas), It just that they are machines that could go as fast as a modern performance car but they were intolerant of mistakes.

Exactly. The legendary Tazio Nuvolari (who may have driven at least one of the cars on this race, I mean he owned the #33 Alfa Romeo in period) said about Monza Race track, according to Earl Howe; "If you would drive flat out for 9 out of 10 kilometers of the Monza race track, you're going to run off the track and crash into a tree. " That came from a man who won 3 Italian GPs at Monza and whose two closest friends died in a race accident at Monza.

Another reason is the qualité of the road. In 1935 they were runnî'g on the sand or something like that.

well, just guess. goodwood is a relativly safe track. they all wear modern helmets. the tires are produced by modern standarts. idk if it´s the same with spare parts. also fataliys dind´t occured afaik that often but sky rocket in the late 60s and 70s when the cars got real freaking fast. these here are fast but not that fast where a slight driving input mistake kills you instant.
@pmp1337
@pmp1337 4 года назад
The track is an actual track and not a road filled with potholes or not even paved! Drivers are using modern helmets with better visibility than those googles with little glass windows they used and their leather "helmets". They are pointing to each other for the opponent to pass, they would never do that back in the day when fighting for a place... Tires are better, lubricants and fluids are better. I doubt they were badly taken care back then, probably the teams were better and bigger than these teams and some were supported directly by the brands, the design engineers back then knew a lot more about the cars they designed, there were no computers to help, they had to draw by hand and do math on paper.

Look the nimble, unfaired, underpowered little Bugatti of the twenties compared against 10 years more modern, more powerful, lower racing cars, and still put up a fight. Tiny tires, no top speed, and there she is, the lovely, screaming blue speckle in permanent drift, waiting the hairpin to cancel the much heavier opponents. As well, what beasts Alfas were back in the day, simply another league.
@barondegil1
@barondegil1 8 месяцев назад
Type 35 is definitely a great car! Why is it so fast compared to more modern race cars from the mid-30s? First, the later T35s featured a supercharger, making them much faster than the early naturally aspirated cars, without forced induction. Secondly, in the pre-war years, racing tracks usually had longer speed sections and fewer corners, unlike the Goodwood track, which does not allow more powerful cars to reach the maximum speed, which is beneficial for the T35, which is very nimble in corners. And finally, thirdly, the racer Julian Majzub, who drove the Bugatti, is an excellent driver, one of the most experienced and gifted in these historical races.

@@barondegil1Christian Glaesel in the Alfa os taking it really easy in this race, he can leave everyone else far behind if he wanted to. His fastest lap in the race was done on the final lap, a 1:37, which is still 4 seconds slower than his pole time. Sean Danaher in his 6CM, well, he's quick, but not that quick. Looking at his lap times from some earlier times he raced the 6CM, hes driving it as fast as hed done before... Michael Gans in his V8RI, apparently, the car is badly overgeared, hence it uses 16" tires (whne it actually used 18-19" in period) to try to gear it down. Also, it seems that the car is starting to run rough... So, yeah, the reason why the Bugatti is mixing with them is because the cars ahead weren't being driven to the limit...

Why do I get the feeling that the cost of a set of modern tyres is as much as the cost of the car itself back in the day.

@jcgabriel1569

Down the Lavant straight, they should be doing 130-140 mph, which is quick, considering the fact that it isn't actually straight and it is not that long. But if you're talking about the top seepds that these cars could do, those Bugattis could do 140-150mph, that silver Maserati about the same. The no. 28 Maserati could doa lot more than 160, and the winning P3 could reach 170mph!

@@lucywucyyy I understand Lord March doesn't allow "replicas" to race. A, because they're not historic and B, drivers might be willing to take greater risks with cars that are worth £100,000 than cars worth a few million. When Jaguar started manufacturing what they called "continuation" lightweight e-types a few years back, Lord March said they would not be allowed to race at the Revival meetings.

Not even a roll bar? That's mad. But seeing that some are sitting on the right hand side, I'd get even more nervous if it was a counter clockwise circuit!

The wisdom of the time, is it is better to be thrown from the car instead of being pinned underneath it, with the nasty result of either being crushed to death of being burned to death with the car. And, the main advice of the time is; don't think of what will happen if you crash, *just don't crash!*
