A "special" composer, with seemingly effortless ability as an orchestrator. Did he learn a thing or two from Ravel? Whatever the case, I adore this music!
There is a lovely "flow" to this wonderful composition, even where there are a few dramatic punctuations. The use of Christmas Carols is restrained, RVW introducing them subtly until the mighty "First Nowell" towards the end. Every part is worthy of attention but my favourite sequence is 15:47-21:12, where the baritone voice sings beautifully and the orchestra seems to evoke a kind of horizontal stillness around well-known Yuletide themes......astonishingly done!!
Just tonight, great discovery. I have been letting You Tube play all night since yesterday. A Chrome extension kicked in and allowed it to play continuously in the home here, and the most wonderful works have been coming up on the playlist. THIS is one I had no idea existed!
