An introduction to the armour worn by the Adeptus Astartes, from power armour to storm shields. Apologies for the poor audio volume in the middle. Unfortunately it was an issue on recording. I will be upgrading recording equipment soon, so hopefully this won't be an issue in future. For now I recorded audio all the way up. If you have a sub-woofer now is the time to use it...
Intro Music:
Daniel Yount - Dark Times

A thing you forgot to mention about the Aquila armour; the armour only got its name after the Horus Heresy after the Emperor decreed that all loyalist legions were to bear his aquila.

In my opinion I think the Mark 8 power Armour is best suited for Devastator squads as it provides more protection but also can be quite useful for tactical squads.

is the power armor ever taken off, or if does it stay on forever?
@erikbeatty9711
@erikbeatty9711 8 лет назад
They take it off. A good view into how space marines work is Brothers of the Snake by Dan Abnett. Other novels about the space marines often discuss how they act off the battlefield. They can keep their armor on for years if they are going from conflict to conflict but occasionally will take it off during travel if they have chapter serfs to help don the armor again.

Hello there..i've got a good qustion.. The terminator armor it's supposed to be an armor that goes on top of the power armor? I mean..it's like a second armor that goes on top of the power armor?Or you can jsut fit it on top of an Astartes? In the space-hulk book.,,if i remember they were some short explanations about the Termiantor armor.. and i remember that against the Genestealers many terminator had the legs and arms hidraulic tubes damaged and they were unable to move..even if they were unharmed. And in the Horus-Heresy (false gods) i remember Torgaddon making fun of First Captain Abbadon that he was to big to fit in a terminator Armor. So my question it's. The Terminator armor it's like some Exoscheleton armor that goes on top of something.. Or just a more big Power Armor? I know that a Normal space marine can move it's power armor even if had sufferd intense damage.even without the fibre bundles muscles.Just with his brute force
@MrValenttinno
@MrValenttinno 9 лет назад
P.S I know that many captains were much larger than a normal astartes. But i don't think that any Captain without his Power armor can be as big as a Terminator.So that's why i thought that maybe the Terminator armor goes on top of the Power-Armor. But ofc i may be wrong Feel free to ilumiante me. Sorry for my grammar
@VaultsOfTerra
@VaultsOfTerra 9 лет назад
+Valentin Mitiu No, terminator Armour is separate to power Armour and worn separately. It is much heavier then power armour, and so is very difficult to move when damaged, plus they are a one size fits all sort of armour, where as power armour is easier to adjust if the Marine is larger or smaller then average.
@warellis
@warellis 9 лет назад
+Valentin Mitiu What you're thinking of is Centurion armor. It goes over standard power armor and is like armor over armor.

What silly about Space Marine armor is that in most artwork the artist didn't bother to draw it over a human body. I know Space Marines are supposed to be larger than regular humans, but if you look at a typical illustration of one and try to logically extrapolate the shape of the person inside, you get a ridiculous form.

It's funny in this galaxy-spanning empire only comes up with technology ever 200 years or so... No wonder the Tau are a dangerously underestimated threat. They develop technology at an extremely rapid rate, compared to the Empire of Man.
@DaemonicPact666

The original tau homeworld was covered by a warpstorm. The imperium first discovered it with tribes. after the wwarpstorm those tribes became the powerful tau empire
@samelpaso4433
@samelpaso4433 9 лет назад
douglas preston So the influence behind the Tau's technological advance was the Warp/Chaos? How did that work? They don't seem to be effected by the warp in the way Cultists or Chaos Space Marines are. I thought the Tau have a weak psychic presence and would therefore be less desirable to warp-entities. I forgot specifically how the Tau advanced so quickly, but I thought the arrival of the Ethereals helped unify the tribes. Then that unification led to their society advancing.

Watched it. Spotted a few mistakes, like how actually the knowledge to make power armour was never lost, it just devolved in most places to where only Mk I-style could be made. All the Techno-Barbarian Warriors were augmented, even those fighting against the Emperor. Thunder Armour was only designated as Mk I when Mk II was made. These mistakes and others, led to a few contradictions in there. P.S. Thanks for using one of my pics, but I do have loads more on armour if you ever decide to re-do this.
@Gabdube

"Padded breaches" is like textile armour, not so much "leather armour". The idea of leather armor is a very common misconception, and it's mostly due to Gary Gygax being an idiot sometimes. "Leather armour" was usually made from rawhide, not tanned leather. The hide was heat-treated with wax or oil, lacquered and made into small rigid plates resembling modern plastic. Tanned leather, on the other hand, is flexible and weaker against cutting and piercing; it was also more expensive before the industrial revolution, and therefore would not be a good choice for armoring when a simple linen gambeson is both cheaper and outright better. There's a reason why almost every people throughout human history used textile armour (from the stone age to this day), while hide-based armours were rare, mostly ceremonial, and mostly curiosity pieces (even in their own time).

Question. Why do the traitor legion (Chaos space marine) models mostly have heavily modified MK7 armour? Is there a lore explanation for this, or is it an oversight from the guys at Games workshop?
@VaultsOfTerra
@VaultsOfTerra 9 лет назад
It has become less common now the designs for the older armour types are so well know, but the lore theory is that, although Mk.IV and V were common with the chaos legions during the HH, they have had to loot newer armour as their old equipment wore out over the last 10,000 years, so they either took the MK.VII plate from SM supplies or looted them directly from the corpses of their dead foes, and modified them accordingly to show their allegiance and defile the armour's machine spirit. Out of lore, it is easy to take an existing SM mold and modify it for a CSM rather then having to create a completely new mold for a new model, although that is changing now forge world has been putting out Heresy era models, allowing for more heresy armour types to field in people's armies. I hope that answered your question.

I may be wrong but I think you made a mistake with regards to when the Terminator armour was created. Storm bolters have the same firepower as 2 bolters. Essentially a storm bolter is a double barreled bolter. And the thing about Genestealers is, they are nasty in close combat. Their rending claws will wreak some vehicles as well as power armor. And terminators aren't always the ones that go into space hulks. Sometimes full space marine squads will have to go in and deal with the threats if terminators are unavailable.
@shasoshadowsun3828
@shasoshadowsun3828 11 лет назад
They're the oldest standing members of the Chapter and have experience battling Tyranids, their armor is the thickest, they're the most accurate and have the heaviest weapon power. I'd say that sending in regular space marines is a likelier chance of failure, over sending in experienced veterans who have likely fought Tyranids before, perhaps even repeatedly, have better guns and stronger armor.

Great work you are doing here! I would like to offer some feedback though :) The difference in sound levels are a bit annoying, the sound levels vary through out the video and I have to turn the sound up to hear you properly but then everything besides the talk, like the music for the intro and outro (and other sounds on my computer), become very loud. Also, for doing re-takes it is often easiest just to note the time on a piece of paper so it is easier to find and fix when editing :)

It is worth to note that Alpharius (or Omegon... or both) is still alive so primarch armor does exsist. But if you mean armor from one of the dead/lost primarchs it's a good question, However if there is, I doubt that any space marine is actually big enough to use it.

I thought the Adeptus Mechanicus don't like to innovate and mostly just use old plans, but here they are innovating Power armor. Is the power armor an independent invention for it to be innovated or the "No innovation" is only for weapons before the Dark Age and anything after that is allowed to be innovated or re-designed?
@CtrlAltGiveUp
@CtrlAltGiveUp 9 лет назад
Warmach1ne 32 While creating new technologies and deviating extremely from current designs is frowned upon, creating new versions of existing equipment based upon necessity is quite common. The Mk VIII armour (which took ~8000 years to create) is simply the Mk VII armour with a few extra armour plates (a gorget and two leg protectors) strapped on. Innovation and experimentation wasn't banned before the Horus Heresy as it is in current 40k, but the situation was similar. According to the HH book Mechanicum by Graham McNiell, the limitations in creating new technology was more a fear of those who understood not only how something worked, but also why it works.

Sorry Baron but they were not. They had (or rather will ) suffered a special genetic failure which can't occur at "nowadays's" Space Marines -except Chaos Renegades- they had gone to mad sooner or later because of the extreme performances of their built-in enhancements.

Ogre Laca Oh but they were, again in some respects. Check the lexicanum. wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Thunder_Warriors "Even the few that survived the end of the Unification Wars were more than a match for an Astartes in single combat. They were made highly resistant to psychic attack, perhaps because of the sorcery they would regularly face during the Age of Strife. They had tremendous upper body strength that, when coupled with their early model of power armor, made them virtually unbeatable in close combat." Modern Astartes are better designed for the Great Crusade that the Emperor had in mind, being more mentally stable and living much longer and having a much more refined creation process, but the Thunder Warriors shouldn't be forgotten. The Emperor might have even allowed these defects because he didn't want the violent psychotics that had grown up on pre-unified Terra leading his armies.

BaronPraxis8492 Thanks, I've read it. But these are just word of an editor. They are not fans nor warriors nor intelligent men. (some of the house writers like Dan Abnett has no ability to question a British veteran about war..) Read this (WH40k WIKI): "Despite their many early victories in the Unification Wars, the Thunder Warriors were far from perfect. Some were mentally unstable, others suffered catastrophic biological failure after an unprecedented span of years, their own superhuman physiques turning against them in the end." Plus "Though the Thunder Warriors were superior in every physical aspect of their creation to the later Space Marines, they suffered from one flaw the later Astartes would not -- their lifespans were extremely short. " Plus " Unlike most Space Marines, the Thunder Warriors were cold-blooded, ruthless killers who possessed talents for nothing other than war. In many ways they represented the worst aspects of Mankind's nature rather than its best. As the Unification Wars drew to a close, the Emperor knew that He would still need the superior skills of gene-modified warriors in order to carry on his "Great Crusade" and conquer the galaxy. It was for this reason that He had moved to craft the genetically-engineered warriors who were truly superior in every way to average humans -- morally, spiritually and intellectually as well as physically. These perfections of the transhuman warrior template would become the first true Space Marines of the Legiones Astartes. The Thunder Warriors were discarded as imperfect tools that had served their purpose." Plus "The emblem gives the suit its most common present-day name - Thunder Armour. This early armour was produced on a completely local basis. There was no standard design, individual suits varied heavily and their exact designs were often a matter of personal taste. The main part of the armour is the massive powered torso which encloses the chest and arms. Coiled energy cables beneath the armour plating transmitted energy from the power pack on the back to the arms, greatly increasing the warrior's physical strength. Since the fighting on Terra during this period was primarily close-quarters, the strength of a warrior's chest and arms was of paramount importance. The legs of this armour are not powered at all, but are enclosed in tough padded breaches, though simple steel plates were sometimes also used. Although uncommon, the best-equipped warriors sometimes wore armoured greaves and armoured boots. However, this ancient suit of Power Armour was noticeably noisier than later models, perhaps due to the unpowered legs, making stealth operations nearly impossible in it. The Thunder Warriors were armed with an archaic, but large and powerful pattern of the standard Astartes Bolter." wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/thumb/3/35/The-Outcast-Dead.jpg/371px-The-Outcast-Dead.jpg (Here you can see the two survivors of the Culling:Arik Taranis and Ghota) SO... It is not about us, our debate BUT the Thunder Warriors and Space Marines. A future fight can be VERY dirty. I think of the ABC-protection which the Space Marines (fully sealed power armour) HAVE but the Thunder Warriors will be drowned in a gas, eaten alive by biological components (virus or a bacteria) or simply killed by radiation (alfa and gamma rays of nuclear warheads). That's why : let us assume they wouldn't use such things. When a modern firefight is in progress two components are vital: firepower and speed/agility. Even a man with a simple musket from the XVIIth century or a Turkish Janichar with his reflex bow would kill a Thunder Warrior from distance because of his un /underarmoured legs and lower body. (If you are boosted up to a mass of Schwarzenegger or Lou Ferrigno it worth nothing because you'll lose your agility, you cannot take cover etc.) The SM wins. Lets see the CLOSE/Hand-to-Hand COMBAT. The same size, roughly the same strenght (WS). A Space Marine is about my physique (strong and mucsular but agile enough, not slowed by overbuilt muscles) and a Thunder Warrior has huge shoulders and arms WITHOUT appropriate proportions of the lower body ( see a bodybuilder with arms of 60 cm and legs like columns he simply can NOT move). SM wins. A TW fights with a Thunder Hammer (Ghota, one of their best) or a mace or gladius-type powersword. The hammer/mace is a huge heavy and clumsy bludgeoning weapon, gladius is for piercing (see Roman Legionnaries). A SM ( CHARACTERISTICALLY a Dark Angel as their Legion is the FIRST not the puny Ultramarines) uses a powered broadsword or bastard sword or power axe. These sword are piercing/slashing weapons with a longer blade and hilt but can be used with one hand just like the axe. SMs may use battle knives or powered daggers (like Dark Angels sacrificial blades that can be seen on 2nd Edition models - especially Terminators). While a Thunder Warrior swings his hammer/mace or tries to thrust his blades into the enemy will be sliced twice by a Calibanian sword ( longsword) or stabbed by a two-handed grip ripost. And they can't even parry a SM's slash. That is pure artifier's and Swordmanship (technical) question. SM wins. Lets see the WAR!!! War is NOT a duel where a Thunder Warrior or a Custodian surely will kill a Space Marine (not a 42nd millenium but a 31st millenium SM). Though war is not about single actions. It sis about squads, platoons detachments and their leaders. In this field, both tactically and strategically Space Marines BEAT both of their predecessors. Why? Because TWs are brutal killers and psyhotics like Angron's World Eater Renegades, nothing more. Because Custodians are perfect bodyguards, nothing more. SPACE MARINES ARE KNIGHTS who use tactics and strategy, they co-operate they help one another because they are BRETHREN. They are resilient to psyhology (oh... a Greater Daemon is closing, everyone runs but DeathWings are assaulting) and they HAVE psykers in the form of Librarians - who are strong enough like a Sith Lord in Star Wars. They will kill TWs by dozen or a fry even a Custodian. So, I ADMIT the greatness of TWs or Custodians but these are just bodyguards or mercenaries while Space Marines are tru warriors, warrior knights. Quite a different kind and a different warfare. To be brutal does not mean you win, brother...

Ogre Laca Look I'm not denying that the Thunder Warriors were clad in less protective armor, nor am I denying that they were insane technobarbarians. However I must take issue that a 17th century musket could harm armor from 30000 years in the future. And yes, if you examine the picture, the Thunder Warriors did have armor on their legs. It just wasn't as protective as the powered areas that protected the chest and arms. "The legs of this armour Mark are typically not power-armoured at all, but are enclosed in tough padded breeches. The best-equipped warriors sometimes wore armoured greaves and armoured boots, and such additional protection was common amongst the Thunder Warriors." src: White Dwarf 129 (UK), Space Marine Armour by Rick Priestley, reprinted in Warhammer 40,000: Compilation "A Space Marine is about my physique" (wut, you're 9 feet fall and 450 lbs of pure muscle?) "(strong and mucsular but agile enough, not slowed by overbuilt muscles) and a Thunder Warrior has huge shoulders" (I forgot, space marine pauldrons got smaller over time) "and arms WITHOUT appropriate proportions of the lower body ( see a bodybuilder with arms of 60 cm and legs like columns he simply can NOT move)." (I'll agree that proportions in 40k are inaccurate to the point of hilarity but the Thunder Warrors I've seen look about as well proportioned as Space Marines, please link me to anything that disproves this.) Again, "Even the few that survived the end of the Unification Wars were more than a match for an Astartes in single combat." I must stress that the lexicanum doesn't like fanon and if they printed something, it likely showed up in official works somewhere. Besides which, it was the arms and chest that were powered so they didn't have to do all the running and jumping a Space Marine ought to, which insofar as I am aware, is not much due to the very heavy suits of power armor they have on. Remember, powered armor is still very heavy plate armor. The powered aspect means that they can move better, not that they can sprint around doing backflips. And yes, the Thunder Warrior armor is less protective, but the Thunder Warriors still had the might that this was less of an issue. Also that bit about the weapons probably doesn't hold much measure as there haven't been much in the way of technological advancements since the Horus Heresy, you know, what with the techpriests being too afraid to mess with DAoT tech and discouraging experimentation for the most part. Of course I'm quite sure that the TW were no match for the Custodes, who from what I've seen in The First Heretic, were more than a match for many Adeptus Astartes. And in that same book it spoke of how the AA worked together as a unit, something I wouldn't be surprised to find that the TW would've had problems with. In conclusion: calm your tits. I merely said that the TW were better in some aspects, not that they would curbstomp AA and should've been leading the Great Crusade.

Can space marines remove their armour for example walk around and fight. Without it
@Gauntlet1212
@Gauntlet1212 9 лет назад
Yes of course. But they are at peak efficiency when in armor to which they are connected through the black carapace, an organ that connects the space marine to the sub systems (machine spirit) of his power armor, making both into one entity.
