3 Node VMS VAX cluster (Vax-3900) running on 3 Raspberry PI systems. (Simh emulator) Note. One of the VMS systems is build using Charon on a W98 system 12 years ago (December 2000)
I worked on the AN/FPS-117 Over the Horizon Radar in the eighties. I think we had a 40-system VAX cluster running the radar. Took up a huge building just to house the data center. I am betting we could have run it on these Rasberry PIs! In the space of a small Bedroom.
Mark. This is a small DCL script written in 1988 by Peter Smith. In 1991 I made a small modification. I found that version and can mail it to you if you want. (Later I made other modifications to run it on AXP as well, but can not find that version now)
Regretably, I had a draft copy of VAXCluster Principles that has disappeared from my library over the years. I wonder what the relative performance is for a R.Pi board running VMS in this configuration as compared to a real VAX.
no way! I still have the draft speck Roy Davis wrote, got to 'play' in Franklin MA with this this is Awesome! 8 ) P.S. I'm not gonna shower and spill some coffee on my shirt!
i have R.Pi 4B 4GB can i do the emulation on this R.pi 4B? and where do i get the download ? do i need to run it as a cluster or can i just Run VAX/VMS and try to install sotware programs to do programming on the emulator?
Hi Ron, It has been many years ago (2012-2013) since I did this experiment. Probably I used RPI v2B but I don't see any reason why it would not run on a $b. I don't have VMS running anymore, so I can not check anything, but there is no reason why you need a cluster. I just started the VAX-11-750 emulatior and installed things from the original VMS containers.
