I'll never do anamorphic (I don't even prefer its look over regular lenses), I'll never work on a set (at least not as a videographer) and I generally don't care to learn about any of what he's teaching here. That being said, a fantastic video. Just enjoyed hearing a man talk about his passion. That's all. Made my day a little brighter.
Just so you know the new Gh5 II already took care of the IBIS and de-sqeeze in camera for these 1.8 Anamorphic lenses. But yes the I can't wait for the GH6, as its legacy will be an anamorphic beast on a budget.
If you have used GH5 mark 2, can you maybe say whether the preamps are cleaner compared to the regular GH5? I find that when I feed mics into my GH5 the audio is noticeably hissy, esp when I use Rode Wireless Go with the Go lavalier.
@@yawningmarmot I am sorry I can't say. I normally just record externally at this point. Can't say its not a pain in the butt a lot of times though!! Hopefully someone will reply with a good take. But aside from audio the gh5 mark 2 does have a ton of subtle upgrades that really really add up.
Great "Rouge" poster on your wall. I love Kieslowski films, my favorite being "The Double Life of Veronique" (also staring Irene Jacob). One of the shots from that film that has stuck in my mind is of Veronique facing the window of the train car she's in. She's staring into a marble, in which we can see flashes of reflected light on the windows of the inverted buildings as they pass. Thank you for your review today. You've given me a lens think about and also made me want to make time in my weekend for a favorite director. I hope Chris and his family all get back to good health soon!
Wonderful enthusiastic review, Jordan! I too would love it if Vazen go back & redesign their other lenses along the lines of the 28mm - a set of compact anamorphics would be a joy. I love the textural quality of how the de-focussed backgrounds are rendered - and that is something you just don’t get with the Siuri lenses - great though they are for giving us affordable anamorphics. Yes, they are expensive, but their Hollywood counterparts wouldn’t leave you much change from selling your house. Could this be the lens that gives the the GH6 a real reason to exist…?

So the Laowa Nanomorph 27mm has been teased a while ago. It's not out yet, and the 6mm isn't either. There is a direct comparison to Sirui, who also have a wide anamorphic and their cine housed MARS is MFT as well. And having the kind of wide angle barrel distortion that gets pronounced by the squeeze is what I would want. Sadly an Elite Anamorphic costs 29k on ebay. But that's the look I kinda want. I was close to buying the Voitländer Super Nokton 29mm a few times. But that is really expensive for MFT lens. But the Vazen is like twice that. And I don't think you can do desqueezing for stills in Capture One. Which is what I would like to do.

Vazen 28mm also has an Amber Flare version (Only availble in RF mount). It almost cover Super35 Sensor area as well. The video will be ultrawide with 16:9's desqueeze.

Would love to see you do a review of the budget ($1600 USD) Sirui full frame (1.6x) that just came out. I could even lend one next time you're in the Seattle area if needed.
Sadly, most people who watch DPReview TV aren't going to be interested because it isn't super sharp and isn't super fast. And while I cringe every time I hear the word "cinematic," I have to admit the footage shot with the Vazen 28mm looks pretty darn good.
I guess I'm just an old camera nerd. Don't have anything remotely new (besides my iPhone) but I enjoy the reviews. I wonder if I still have film in my F3.
Out of all of the anamorphics that are not in the tens of thousands, this one has the best lens flare. I actually would prefer it to be a bit more subtle but it's not too overbearing. Overall, though I guess I just really prefer crispiness first, so I'll stick with the Sony GMs.
As a total videography noob, I'm just curious what the benefit of using anamorphic is over just cropping down. So far, it looks like flares and bokeh look are 2 big reasons. It seems like unless you have an anamorphic projector with a desqueezing lens you're going to lose resolution anyway, so in terms of cropping versus anamorphic lens it wouldn't really matter unless you had that specific projector setup or an Ultra wide display. I know, I know. I'm a caveman.
So... The vertical fov is 56mm, and the horizontal fov is 28*2/1.8 ~= 31mm. Hmmm interesting. Would be cool if they made a whole set that's similar in size.
I don't think this is 100% accurate. The crop factor is based on making the diagonal field of view equivalent, but since M4/3 and FF have different aspect ratios, they'd have different vertical and horizontal "crop factors", even before the anamorphic squeeze. I found a calculator which, if accurate, suggests the vertical FOV was more like a 50-52mm lens on FF (still pretty darn close to what you said), and the horizontal FOV was 31-33m on a full frame, about what you said (the range was because the calculator attempts to correct for focus breathing). Those numbers assume a full readout. If your FF camera crops to 16:9, you'd need a 43-44mm lens to achieve the same vertical FOV at the same distance to subject, and, as you would expect, if you crop to 2.4:1 you end up with that 31-33mm lens giving you the exact same frame size as this vazen on M4/3 after desquezing
But the equivalence of 56mm... Can be a little limiting isn't it? If they make a more compact 15mm T3.5 or something would be amazing though, just saying.
Am I the only one who would love to use one of these for photos? The look seems fantastic for landscape shots with some good foreground and out of focus background. I just need to get rich first I guess 😅
I meat okay. You really don’t need much more than an 28mm anamorphic lens for travel or videos for DPReview. And T3 or or T4 lenses even if longer would be a much greater bother for narrative work at the level the Vazen are targeting. Btw this snobby poo pooing of 1.33x anamorphic lenses is uncalled for. The most gorgeous anamorphic lenses ever, the Panavision Apo Panatars are only 1.25x squeeze. But sure I get where you’re coming from if you think an ultra wide 2.39:1 aspect ratio is “cinematic”.
Definitely! I've been doing alot of photography with with the Sirui anamorphic lenses, the only thing that will get in the way is the weight and bad close focus abilities.
So I have a Vazen 40mm 1.8X. GH6 and GH5S + Atomos Ninja V. So what can I tell you guys. GH5S have 3.3K 422 10 Bit 24/25/30p on Card and 3.7K Raw on Recorder. If you take 3.3K on card, through HDMI output is not full screen VIEW. Its only 50% with this desqueeze. If you take 3.7K you have full screen View on Ninja. The same with gh6. BUT gh6 dont have 422 10bit. We have 420 10p on Card. And also non full screen view. If we want 60P on anamorphic mode we have to crop image...So Iam disappointed about this all.... Show less
Are you guys bored or something? That adorable lens for MFT costs $3,250.00 and the point of shooting with MFT as opposed to having an Alexa is not to spend a fortune. I hate to say this but this is total BS. If I have money to buy/rent that lens it means I don't shoot MFT. I mean, really?
Optics might be good but the housing is such a low quality. Flange screws are prone to snapping due to unapropiate sizing of screws. Also a screw controls the iris, yeah, one screw...Optics are ok but again...housing is BS
"Cinematic" just mean "looks like cinema" Anamorphic lenses were used to shoot ultrawide aspect ratios on standard film, and they came with distortions that people are now nostalgic for.
