The main oopsie I see in designs is the wiper feeding the base. Pot gets oxidized over time from not being adjusted and then the bias voltage gets wonky. Also, never put the pot in the collector-base circuit. If you lose the pot then amp blows up.

Yes, but how do you calculate the current going into the base when there's (essentially) no emitter resistor?

Current into base will depend on the transistor physical characteristics. To use a generic example, he just assumed 10% of current on R1 getting through base. Anyway, for a precise calculation, you'll need Gm value, HFE and Rπ, using what we call "BJT small signal model" to design this model appying Kirchoff's Laws on entire network. Hope it could help.
