Last week, I took a massive risk and tried something new with the way how Guitar videos are done on this show..... and here's what you had to say about it! We've held over the 4th of July sale until SUNDAY NIGHT! get in on these last minute deals at: www.spectredigi...
and the Prism pre-release here: spectredigital...
About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

I work at a distribution warehouse for vinyl records and we’re in the process of moving to a bigger warehouse because vinyl keeps getting more and more popular and we’ve been running out of space. It’s awesome to see and I think the vinyl resurgence is an amazing thing for the music industry.

This is good to hear, I had actually wondered if the vinyl resurgence had come and gone by now. I like it but on a large scale it was something I could have seen being a temporary trend.

@@chrispodesta8105 here is something that is even cooler, resin printers are getting where they have the resolution to print records, not quite there, but oh so close with the current 4K and 8K printers. We will surely see commercial printers in the next 3-5 years and probably consumer printers very very shortly after that that can produce the resolution to print a 45 a home, 12in as well with a special format bed/printer build.

The clamps you look for to make the quick release speaker thingy are destaco clamps! Used them heavily when I was in the car industry bending exaust pipes. Them clamps are excellent to put the pieces in a sawing machine for example to not let them slide while in the fixture. So - Destaco clamps!

Your advice about spending money on stuff vs spending money on experiences is incredibly valid and true. I tend to lean towards the stuff side while my wife tends to lean towards the travel side and to be honest, I am so grateful for the experiences. It doesn't even have to be an all out expensive 3 week trip to Europe; try a 4 day weekend in Miami or a concert in Montreal or camping at a race track. The world is full of fun places to see and explore.

Glen, I personally would love to see more longer form videos. I also would like a "behind the scenes" follow up video, Q and A, etc. not on every single long form video, but certainly on some of them. Seeing how things are actually done is one of my favorite parts of your channel. Keep up the great work!

The vinyl vs. CD is actually quite interesting and very layered comparison. The "CD always loud, vinyl more dynamic" is pretty much the the tip of the iceberg and very very minor thing because mostly it's just the mastering and has almost nothing to do with the media format, it is same kind of thing as with early stereo LP's. Those who don't know for example The Beatles sat through the mastering of their albums only to the point the, then standard, mono LP mastering and the stereo mix was done just because it was a new shit in the town without them. Yes, there was minor dynamic and whatever differences between mono and stereo LP's but mostly the difference comes from the mixing technique and the audio engineers themselves. But generally the audiophile community is fucking weird. Like if the tonewood is the greatest myth in guitars, just wait until you learn about magical crystals in router affecting the streaming music quality, $2,000 aluminum shelves to minimize the resonance of electronic circuits and wooden volume knobs to stop radio signals affecting the tone. Oh, and don't forget to get completely separated fuse box and power line for the audio equipment so you get clear electricity for them. Against them the Gibson Guitar Club sound sane with their "made in USA" and "hand made to perfection" arguments.
@csmith29581
@csmith29581 Год назад
Google synergistic research if you want a good laugh. $500 fuses, carbon fiber stands for your speaker wire, the list goes on. The one thing you don't see is sound treatment.

Vinyl masters are highly compressed to keep the bottom end from making the needle skip. Look up The Ob La Di Oh Bla Da story. Let's crank up the bass in the mix. Play a test pressing. Oops. Skip, jump, skip. Not a great idea.

The good think about vinyl is that will force the return of dynamics, instead of pushing sound all the way up to the limit of the recording medium.

Living in this "I want it now" time has made a lot of things terrible or intolerable. Those that listen to pieces of songs and then click onto the next before it finishes drives me nuts. Being impatient at a fast food restaurant is ridiculous. It would be nice for the world to take a step back and relearn patience and the fulfillment of really watching or listening to a completed piece of video or music. Maybe it's coming back around a little with LPs, but most people need to just stop, sit down and enjoy something completely and gain respect for the work that people put into making amazing art for us to appreciate and use as a mental checkpoint for times in our lives. Like you said, Glenn, memories are super important and some are much better than others. Thanks again for being you and bringing us killer content!

There is something that surprised me some time ago, and I still don't have the answer to this question. Since I started playing the guitar, I've tried all sorts of amplifiers and different types of speakers. I was really into tube amps, and I enjoyed changing speakers in my combos, but I was never truly satisfied-I always felt like something was missing. About two years ago, I switched to modeling at home . I have a Positive Grid Mini and Go, as well as a Fender Mustang LT40s. By chance, one day I decided to connect one of them to my big JBL Partybox 310 using the headphone jack. And it was a huge surprise. Not only did it work, but it sounded much better than anything I had experienced in the past. That's when I realized the potential of a simple headphone jack. It made me wonder why more musicians don't do the same thing-connecting directly to a PA system or similar sound system , like the JBL, for example. I still don't have the answer to that question, even though it sounds much better than any guitar cab or speakers I have ever tried in my life. PS: It would probably solve the problem, by the way, regarding Line 6 amps because I suppose their modeling is very good, but the weak point seems to be their speaker (yes, Glenn, I'm looking at you).

My GenZ sons, 18 and 13 have been buying vinyl as a way to support their favorite unsigned artists that do not tour. It gives them a limited edition collectable that they can hold in their hands as well as knowing that 100% of the funds go to THE ARTIST doing the art/work. This was before either of them even had turntables. It does not hurt that both their mother and I have an art background and actually create things for a living as an example for them to follow.

Oddly, one of my favorite things about vinyl is that the album art is so much bigger. It's something you can look at and display. You also get the liner notes - I remember part of the ritual with a new album was listening to the album while reading the liner notes. These are all things that have been lost in the streaming age.

Some days I don’t play as well. But it’s still about having fun and enjoying the experience 👍🏻

I always went for walks and did not just snooze in the hotel rooms. The only story I recall about a guitar is it getting busted. Out of the blue my mom and dad Showed up 1100 miles away with a new bass. They drove from IL to Minot ND. I still think of this my folks where so cool. I was only 18 at the time I'm now 57 so it a great memory. Good advice.

A bit late to comment, but I haven't seen the video earlier: About the WAY too bright LED's; As a light tech, one of the most important things I always check for is that the lighting doesn't blind the audience or distracts from the performance in ANY way. Light is there to SUPPORT the show, not to overrule it. You can destroy a show with bad lighting, even if the band is absolutely awesome. That's why there's a dedicated tech for the lighting, so audio can focus on the sound, and the band can focus on their performance. You don't want any of them to have to worry about any of the others!

I worked as a lighting desinger for a small venue this past spring. I had a few lights behind the band that I used for the silhouette effect but only when it was appropriate. For example when the band would walk on stage to make the entrance more dramatic or at a more ambient part of a song to enhance the moment. And I would always ask the band if they had moments in their set where they think it would fit. The trick is to save it for a few special moments in the set. I want the audience to see the band and connect with them. Not blind their eyes for 90 minutes.

GLENNNNNN!!! Long time fan and I may be 3 of your subscribers lol. To start I want to say I'm sorry this is a long comment but I wanted to try and be clear with my question. I am a contract musician and I got a gig recently where the band wants me to have stage volume. So I decided on the boss katana artist so I can still run straight to front of house for a clean signal chain. The problem I'm having is I can't just go to a store put in my hearing protection and try a cab at a higher volume. Trust me I've asked every last store here. Now I'm thinking of getting a convertible cab or half open because in smaller venues the subharmonic build up in closed cabs cab can sound terrible in different rooms. What I need help with is what speakers to look for. I prefer a rounder mid range and high end response but there is alot of modern speakers that have a piercing high end with alot of attack which is fine when doing riffs with lots of notes and articulation flying by. When I'm playing with distortion though I'm either chugging or soloing. So rather than rolling the dice I figured I'd ask you for any speaker suggestions to look for when shopping around.

I hear so many people shit on the concept of vinyl simply because it must be an archaic, dumb hipster thing. Glad to hear you mention the aspects of not only ritual but also the fact that the mastering is nearly always superior on vinyl releases that are done correctly (ie: not simply a copy/paste pressing of the cd master).

Regardless of the discussion about quality, I like vinyl for the fact that it makes me sit down and listen to an entire record, or at the very least the side of a record, rather than a track that is just a part of a playlist. When the music is written as a part of an actual album, I find some value in listening to it as such. In a way it is akin to watching a movie in the theatre, where you are wholly concentrated on one thing, as opposed to watching it at home where you suddenly realise it is time to feed the cat, vacuum the living room, call your parents or whatever.

Universal Audio is somewhat affordable now. I have been a windows protools guy forever and I just installed Luna and purchased a Mac Studio. I also got the Sphere LX microphone as well. All I can say is that my eyes are open now!!! The quality of my recordings have gone up exponentially. The UA plug-ins are amazing and the UI control interface is amazing. When are you going to make the step to UA gear?

Watching another channel, it was mentioned that recording engineer for The Beatles, Geoff Emerick, wired a speaker for use as a microphone for a "wider range of low frequencies" (I guess it would be the ultimate in a "big diaphragm" mic.) You can hear it in the Revolver album. I've played around enough to know that speakers can indeed be microphones although impedance matching could be interesting. I thought I'd mention that for some ideas for experimenting in the studio.

I was at a Clawfinger show in Germany a couple of month ago and the supporting band "Enemy Inside" also had these god damn LED towers pointed directly at the audience. They blasted that thing on full strobo nearly through the entire gig. Couldn´t see shit and had to leave the venue for some time. Thought it was just a question of time until someone gets strechered out because of a seizure. When the main act entered the stage and did their show, none of that BS was necessary. Just normal lighting, an awesome show and a lot of fun and memories. Just cover these things up with a angled reflector of some sort ffs. Same strobo effect, but noones going fucking blind.

Bands these days have to do all they can to get an edge in the market. Even locals spend thousands on merch, banners, lights, etc. it would be nice, however, to just see a band play, without a huge show put together by inexpensive DIY LED strips! Nothing wrong with a few people, in street clothes, making amazing noise on a beer soaked stage! Cheers!

Hey Glenn~ Long time fan but first time asking a question: You often highlight the "snake oil" aspects of physical gear but within the realm of DAWs is there a certain plugin that comes to mind as falling within the area of snake-oil-bullshit? Cheers and best wishes from Tokyo,Japan! (was crazy to see you here in photos with Jason, bought my first guitar in Japan from him.)
