I've been sitting on this thing for a year waiting for a convenient moment to demo it, and I'm glad I finally did. It's a truly ancient (as old as me that is) image - not video! - capture unit designed for the ORIGINAL IBM PC - no bloody AT, XT or PS/2!
Raw images from the unit: gekk.info/vc1000

The 8-bit Guy did a video about a similar (but much more primitive) "video digitizer" for the Commodore 64 earlier this year including some information on how that one worked. This one works much better than the one he looked at though.

Most excellent sir. I know I'm 3 years late to the party but I really love this kind of tech. If you still have the means to do so you should use a black and white camera with color filters and combine the images to make rgb images from this device. I've done this with a number of weird cameras over the years and I would love to see the results!

that's a great idea!

At that time there were such devices for the parallel port. I had one available that had taken several frames and calculated them into one photo, which then no longer had any TV artifacts. A recording lasted about 1 - 2 seconds. The quality could keep up with simple digital cameras

I love how your video starts out like a 90’s tutorial “Okay folks, we’re gonna take a look at this...” and then less than a fraction of a second later you just derail to, “I have no f u c k i n g clue if I can get this to work” lmao

I think the thing with these was that, back in those days, computers didn't really have good enough display technology to really capture the flaws of analog video. At least home computers didn't yet. A 1-bit image capture of a NTSC frame might look good, but a 256-color capture of the same frame may look awful.

That's sorta true for people using older machines perhaps, but anyone who'd bought a new computer after about 1993 should have had 1024x768 @ 16bpp. In my reading through computer magazines of the era there was almost nothing being sold new with specs worse than that. I feel like anyone who was enough of an enthusiast to try *editing video on their PC* in 97 had a more than capable display.

8:18 I'm guessing this is supposed to be a "comic book" kinda effect, at least that's what it looks like to me, anyways

i studied linguistics, so i appreciate a wug. why is it in the video, though?

Back when I recorded this, I was essentially doing just livestreams and uploading them, but without actually being live at the time; i needed something to fill in the negative space, so I just picked random pictures. I had a wug jpeg around and just grabbed it.

One thing I notice, you aren't afraid to use "swear" words, feels more genuine imo, but I understand why people stopped, I just prefer it when people speak what their brain says no filter

Casually, offline, I cuss like a sailor, as I do here. And in 2017, when I did it here, I knew nobody was really watching or taking me seriously. As I got more attention, and started trying to tackle more involved projects, I started taking what I was doing more seriously *myself*, and cussing simply started feeling contradictory to my own goals. I started thinking, "if someone who didn't know me watched this video, would calling something a fucking piece of shit make them want to keep watching, and learn the nuanced details that I've painstakingly researched about it? Or would it make the video feel more like entertainment than information?" There's nothing wrong with cursing, but it's just not really compatible with a didactic goal, it sets the wrong tone for what I'm trying to accomplish. If it were only a question of what RU-vid permitted, or what people found entertaining, trust me, I would still cuss like a sailor, because people love it and RU-vid sure as hell doesn't care. But I keep writing swears into my scripts, and they never work when I say them out loud, compared to the careful thoughtfulness I (at least try to) put into the words before and after them.

@@CathodeRayDude fair enough viewpoint, indeed there's a proper "place and time" to swear
