I'm always blown away by additive synthesis. That any shape can be approximated by sinewaves only is such a neat property. Thanks for the great tutorial. I set up 8 VCOs and played around with the 8vert ratios based on the root and had a lot of fun!
For anyone watching in the future, VCV Rack actually supports math input in it's parameters! For example, you can right click on the dB meter, then input 20*log10(ratio) and it will apply the math without needing an external calculator.

Which is weird. But also kind of makes sense in a couple ways. It’s also interesting that if i knew nothing about audio or waveforms & you played me a sine and a square, i could probably match the waveform to its sound. But my reasoning would have nothing to do with what’s actually going on.
@@ts4gv the intuition is that lower frequency sine waves have broader waves, so they'll never make sharp corners. The sharper the corner, the higher frequency wave you need to add to get it. Another way to think of it is that a lowpass filter will make the waveform smoother, so if you do the opposite and make the waveform more jagged, then that has the opposite effect to a lowpass, meaning adds higher frequency content.
I guess when I say "the intuition" what I seem to mean is, "the reason Fourier analysis works out like that is..." so I have no idea of in being helpful...
