One of the main reasons why I couldn’t wait to return to India in November of 2018 is because of the incredible street food there! It’s some of the best food I’ve ever eaten in my life and there’s so much variety to the spices, flavors, and textures. The same dish can be made two entirely different ways in two different regions of the country, and I love that. It was so much fun spending nearly three weeks exploring India’s culinary scene with my travel buddy, Sam from Samuel & Audrey!

Almost immediately after we wrapped up our non-veg tour of Bhatiyar Gali on our second night in Ahmedabad, we began a veg food tour of Manek Chowk with our guide and new friend Rutu and her brother Haard. Most of Ahmedabad’s residents are vegetarian, so I was expecting some fire food and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Come along with us as we dive into some amazing veg Gujarati fare!

After a wild motorcycle ride through the Old Town of Ahmedabad, we arrived at Manek Chowk, where you can find incredible street food from 9 p.m. to two in the morning! It was my last full night in India, so I couldn’t wait to go all-out!
We started with a ghughra sandwich, which is a grilled sandwich that contains potatoes, onions, green peppers, and lots of butter. It came with a mint chutney and a some ketchup. The sandwich was so creamy and cheesy! It was really smooth and delicious, especially with the ketchup!
Next, I had a buttery chocolate and cheese sandwich that was filled with Nutella and shredded cheese, and topped with extra cheese and chocolate chips. It was a delicious overload of sweet chocolate, hazelnut spread, and creamy cheese!
Our next dish was pav bhaji with garlic chutney, a dish I had tried before in Mumbai, and a Jini dosa, which is basically a Chinese-style dosa. The pav bhaji had a really intense garlic flavor, but was incredible. Next, I dove into the Jini dosa, which isn’t as crisp as southern dosas because of the cheese and moist, vegetable filling inside. It came with mint chutney, coconut chutney, and sambar. With the coconut chutney, it reminded me a lot of the Pizza Dosa I had in Hyderabad. It’s one of my top 3 dosas of all-time!
Next was a ghotala dosa, which came with a cheese, paneer, vegetable filling. It was the cheesiest thing I’ve ever had in my life! It was heaven with the mint and coconut chutneys! Then, Sam took the Jini dosa and dipped it in the cheese, paneer, and vegetable sauce!
The next dish we went with was an ice cream sandwich with cheese and pineapple! It’s so fatty, but so insanely delicious. Sam and I both loved it!
We ended our night with a treat I’d had several times before, a Nitrogen Biscuit. I tried a chocolate chip one that made me smoke at the mouth like a dragon! It’s so cold, but is also a really cool experience that everyone has to have at least once!
Wow! What a wild and crazy night in Manek Chowk! I hope you enjoyed this video of our amazing veg street food adventure in Ahmedabad!
