It is actually most accurate to check your ferritin levels and ferritin saturation levels rather than your red blood cell count for iron levels.

As a tip for the viewers: You might want to consider that consuming calcium together with iron decreases the amount of iron your body can absorb. So if you want to take an iron supplement (which you should only do after talking to your doctor since too much iron is dangerous) then make sure to take it without any calcium rich foods. I also don't add calcium enriched foods like plantmilk, tofu or nuts to my smoothies together with iron rich food like Spirulina or Greens. Additionally it's important to know that you need enough calcium for your vitamin d to be absorbed. Taking Vitamin D supplements while you have a calcium deficiany doesn't really change anything so check in with your doctor there as well!
@RainbowPlantLife
@RainbowPlantLife 6 лет назад
Hi Antonia, yes you are right about that! I had a lot more content to share in this video (like this fact) but for the sake of time, I didn't want to inundate viewers with too much info! I don't take a calcium or iron supplement as I'm able to get enough from foods, but definitely something to consider. Thanks!

Hi there, I would recommend to opt out of taking pharmaceutical drugs to supplement and instead adopt, if not already, a well-planned, organic, unrefined and untempered vegan diet (preferably raw so that the life-forces and enzymatic activities are not destroyed that will benefit your system). For example, Vitamins D (with the exception of the body's ability to make it after being exposed to the sun) can be obtained from organic chestnut mushrooms and sun-dried mushrooms; Iron from organic beets etc. One can be benefited too by looking at the Book of Nature and see what foods target which organs e.g organic walnuts and pecans (look like the brain and target the brain e.g contains Omega 3 Fatty Acids, needed for brain health); organic artichoke (looks like the hip and targets the hip); organic kidney beans (looks like kidneys, targets kidneys and the name bears witness of the fact); organic tomatoes (when cut, look like chambers of the heart and targets the heart); organic carrot (when cut, looks like the eyes and targets the eyes); organic broccoli (looks like the respiratory zone and targets the lungs); and so on and so forth. Best wishes 💙💙💙

Consuming iron, d3, calcium, etc from suplements is dangereus according to Morley Robbins. Watch "So You've Just Been Told You're Anemic", "Misled and Misfed, What they don't want you to know about Magnesium", "Morley Robbins - My Theory of Everything".

Most accurate iron lab test is ferritin, you should get that tested. Veganism is awesome but the iron issue is quite important. I found out I'm low af on ferritin - 22ng/ml, under 60 levels aren't recommended, it's best to be around 100. Needless to say I've been feeling tired, major hair loss, pale dry skin and major depression. Stuff like calcium, coffee can inhibit iron absorption, phytates as well. Vitamin C and beta-carotene however boost iron absorption.

Ferritin is an accurate test for iron deficiency anemia. Ranges will say 12 to 200, but you're iron deficient if less than 30. Symptoms can start at less than 75. Not knowing this destroyed me after several years. I searched for answers and finally a doctor checked my ferritin. Everyone should get their ferritin checked. Hair loss, fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, muscle twitches, all are symtpoms. I didn't know I had absorption issues and non heme iron is harder to absorb.

Hi there, I would recommend to opt out from using pharmaceutical drugs to supplement and instead opt for a well-planned, organic, unrefined and untempered with vegan diet (preferably raw so as not to denature or destroy any life-forces and enzymatic activities that are beneficial for the human system). As for chocolate to be used as an iron source, i would also recommend not to opt for that due to the presence of caffeine, an addictive and diuretic drug, that flushes out calcium, thus weakening the bones. It also raises cholesterol; irritates and stimulates the brain, heart and nerves; and taxes adrenal glands. Opt for organic plant food sources such as organic beets that are good sources of iron (personal experience). Best wishes 💙💙💙

Hi there, I would recommend to avoid caffeinated plant sources as it is an addictive and diuretic drug that flushes out calcium, thus leading to weak bones. It also raises cholesterol; irritates and stimulates the brain, heart and nerves; and taxes adrenal glands. Thank you for this important info, Nisha, it is something that not many people tell you about when you go vegan and you really do need to do some research for yourself, to make sure you are getting enough of all of these nutrients. I recently went vegan for both health (my energy levels have improved drastically) and ethical reasons (I can no longer live with knowing how animals are treated to feed the masses). I came across your channel and have been cooking up a storm and the best part is that I have loved every single one of your recipes! I am obsessed with flavor and your recipes always deliver. Thank you, thank you, Thank you. Please keep doing the important work you are doing! I love your recipes and your frank and helpful discussions.

This video comes at the best possible time for me, as I just got my first “vegan” blood results back this week and was looking for someone to compare to. Like you, all I lack is a bit of vitamin D as I live in cold & dark Denmark. By the way, loved your video on hygge, your pronunciation was a bit far from the real thing 🙉😂, but your definition was spot on ❤️, and although I grew up with all of this, it is interesting to hear how you as an American relate to it. So happy one of your comments on Pick Up Limes lead me to your site. I have enjoyed every video of yours so far 😊

Hi there, I do not see any necessity to take pharmaceutical drugs including Vitamin D, which can be obtained from organic chestnut mushrooms and sun-dried mushrooms. I do also recommend to avoid vegan packed alternative foods e.g vegan ham, and instead opt for organic, unrefined and untempered with vegan plant foods preferably in their raw form so as to be benefited by the life-forces and enzymatic activities that would have otherwise been destroyed in cooking methods. Best wishes 💙💙💙

I have long term insomnia and in my search to improve sleep found Stasia Gomenak who follows a keto protocol I would not recommend to anyone. That being said she elucidated how the B complex gets processed in the microbiome so I find no harm living in a northern climate taking 2000 IU Vit D plus 50 B complex and over the last month with other essentials exercise etc. it has helped. I'm 65 with a badly healed old spinal hairline fracture so going at things sensibly and vr lucky to communicate on Zoom with physio help. I love your channel, didn't know you were an MD all the more reason to recommend it to all!!! Tx so much!!!

Hello... I also have dark circles and I'm super sensitive about it. I think it's brave of you to point them out. I just came back as anemic now that I'm vegan. I also have endometrosis, which I'm trying to heal with veganism and other things. I think it's contributing to this because my menstrual cycle is heavy. I love how you own it and maybe that's just what I need to do. in terms of Vit D def and doctors, most don't understand we need supplements because we can't get enough from the sun or our foods. I take 5000 to 10000 mgs a day. May Yahwah bless you and keep you. Numbers 6:24-26

For me, trying to be vegan did nothing for my endo. It made my deficiencies worse. Iron deficiency anemia, low magnesium, low b12, low protein, all what I now struggle from. Having expert excision surgery did help. But I continue to suffer from symptoms from deficiencies. They say low ferritin, which is iron deficient anemia, can make periods heavier. Seems counter productive but it's been in research. Vitamin c boosts iron. Joining support groups on FB have been helpful.

What about dr Greger and dr Neil barnard who suddenly have them and it’s not because of their ethnicity? When people mention dark circles it’s most likely not to put you down but because iron deficiency is a legit concern for those that are looking into possibly becoming plant based. When you see the vegan doctors who are looking worse you start to wonder if this diet is the best or not. I’m not an internet troll . I’m a mother with children who is researching nutrition and I’m actually wondering about what’s best.

Been vegan for 5 years, and I'm just dropping y'all some helpful tips and studies, from experience: IRON: - Vegan Men need 14mg, Vegan Women need 32mg (this is about 1.8x more then regular Iron RDA since non-heme plant iron is less bio-available compared to heme-iron.) - Coffee reduces heme-iron absorption anywhere between 30-90%, so if you're supplementing don't do it 2-3 hours before or after coffee. - Always pair with Vit-C!! increases absorption by 67%. - Mind blowing fact, cook with cast-iron pans, it gives around 6-8mg per use. There's also a product called "Lucky Iron Fish", that gives 6-8 mg per 4 cups, you need to boil it with some lemon juice when making pastas, curries etc. The fish is similar to cast iron, it'll last about 5 years, and multiple uses per day. It's a bit more work, but lasts a long time! - Iron is a mineral not a vitamin, so cheap vegan Iron supplements are very easy to find (made from Ferrous Fumarate or other such compounds). - And yes as she said, I'm Indian, and my genetics itself is prone to more hyper-pigmentation, so dark circles are just a feature for many of us. D3: - Vegan D3 exists today, it's made from Lichen (a symbiotic fungus / alga). D3 supplements are originally harvested from sheep wool (since D3 is actually formed under skin / hair, via cholesterol), so it is taken from another being. And as we all know the wool industry, and mutton industry are one and the same. - D2 -> D3 is naturally converted by the body, but conversion is low! - Darker skin people have more melanin in their skin, that protects against sunlight and UV, which is why it takes more exposure. B12: - You can take 1000UI about twice a week, or smaller doses each morning (has a bit of a metabolism / energy boosting effect). B12 bio-accumulates, so you don't have to be taking it religiously every morning. In fact taking a high dose weekly is enough. - Your body literally only needs 3-6 UI a day, and most doses you get are 1000UI and above for some perspective. - It's water soluble, so there's no harm taking 1000UI your body will accumulate some, and the rest will be urinated. - Nutritional Yeast (Nooch) is a natural B complex health food! And is usually supplemented with B12. It naturally has over 300% of B9 otherwise called Folate, which should be paired with iron as it helps for in the formation of new red blood cells. CALCIUM: - Always pair with D3 and Mg, helps the calcium actually absorb into the bones. Yes. Vitamins and minerals all work in combination and rely on each other to be fully effective. Omega 3 / DHA | EPA: - Omega 3 is an anti-inflammatory, Omega 6 is an inflammatory. Inflammation helps the body heal, but too much is bad, and on the flip side, too much anti-inflammation causes the immune system to suppress functions. So 3 and 6 should always be taken as close to 1:1 ratio. - Most of us get too much Omega 6 from peanuts, oils, etc, but not enough Omega 3. - The most potent form of DHA comes from the sea, and the vegan source and the true origin of it is an "Algae Oil" supplement, or you can also have nori from maki sushi, seaweed snacks, miso, sea moss etc. Unlike misconceptions, it doesn't come from fish, but it bio-accumulates from bottom feeders up the chain. But mercury and toxins also accumulate. - EPA and ALA comes from many plant sources like flax, chia, but the EPA -> DHA conversion done by the body is fairly low. - Algae oil is expensive, but cheapest in liquid form, which must be used in a month. But I store them as icecubes and melt one each month, and supplement occasionally in my smoothie. you need ~300 DHA. Also keep eye out on zinc levels. These are some of the things I know from my time being vegan, hope it's helpful to you guys. Once you know what you're doing honestly, you don't really think about these things. Great video, I learned some new things from here, like Calcium being a mineral which never occurred to me for some reason 💜

Thank you for all your great educational videos. Any thoughts about omega 3 supplements? Does algae oil go rancid easily?
@RainbowPlantLife
@RainbowPlantLife 6 лет назад
I'm so happy you find them useful and educational :) I can't speak to algae oil because I've never tried it, but an omega 3 supplement could be a good idea. There are plenty of plant based sources of omega 3 fatty acids, but most (except perhaps algae oil, as you mentioned) are rich in the ALA type of fatty acid, not in the EPA or DHA types. ALA is not as active in our bodies and we have limited ability to convert it to EPA or DHA, so that's why it might be a good idea to try a supplement. This is the vegan omega-3 supplement I have: amzn.to/2mjuU86

You have gorgeous eyes. Those commenting on your dark circles are simply jealous. :) Now that you mention them sure you have some pigmentation around your eyes, but it sure doesn't look like anemia and I have never noticed them personally until you mentioned it.

Most animal-based D3 is from lanolin, which is a wax from sheep's wool and is a byproduct of the wool industry, so sheep aren't hurt in the production of D3. Yay! I'm so glad that D3 can be sourced from lichen now as well, a great vegan source. 💚

Chewed cyanocobalamin is a he best source of B12 for absorption as enzymes in your spit help you absorb it. Studies have been conducted to show that B12 defecent vegans and vegetarians taking 1000 mgs of methyl cobalamin per day did not absorb enough to raise levels where cyanocobalamin in low doses did

Thank you for information. You are amazing@ I had a short period in my life where i had dark circles around my eyes and i was vegan already. I was during my MA and i was really exhausted from too much going around. I had several major things going around in my life. As artist i had a tendency to drink socially quite a lot. I did not realise it at the beginning but s ok me time after mh studies i self diagnose with Adrenal fatigue. Another thing which i knew from before, that area around the eyes is a reflex zone for kidneys as well as stomach and liver. Adrenal fatigue is exhaustion of Adrenal glands which are above kidneys. I realized that kidneys are filter and started to research about body filters and came to conclusions that i need to clense/flush liver and kidneys That year (2018) i started a major body clense by Andreas Moritz method. First was liver flush and after second liver flush my Adrenal fatigue was gone as well as dark circles around my eyes. It is hard to say which organ was bit too clogged but cleansing liver for sure took some pressure off of the rest of the body. I also wanted tl do this liver flush because i wanted to flush out any leftovers of animal world from times j used to be carnivore. I feel much better now. Also as spiritual person i started to feel my body much better and on the new level. I understand that sometimes it is easier to say "Oh my mom or dad has the same thing", but my opinion is: about first 22 years of my life i ate by their knowledge and being vegan i realized that it was wrong for me, but i did not have enough voice to stand up for myself. Wish you all the best Blessings

I cook mostly in cast iron skillets, I understand foods absorb the iron from them. About all these concerns, I have my doubts: fifty years ago, when I became vegetarian, doctors were saying that I would die.... Science is biased, lacks common sense, and is always changing, so I go by how I feel.

The only real salient problem for Vegans would be B-12. Most vegans or even vegetarians should be taking a B-12 supplement, just because a B-12 deficiency can be so bad for your health. Even though there are vegan sources of B-12, such as in chlorella or some other aquatic plants, they aren't a routine part of most Vegans diets (they aren't even considered food in the US, just dietary supplements). Certain bacteria that live in the gut can also produce Vitamin B-12, but this isn't so common in developed, western countries. Malabsorbtion of B-12 is so common most people, especially the elderly, should be consuming an excess of B-12 just to be safe.

I was vegan for over 5 years, have unnatural dark circles, and just found out i’m anemic. I eat spinach, pumpkin seeds, legumes, and molasses literally every day among many other whole, nutritious plant foods. Get your blood tested, everyone. Everybody’s different. I find natural dark pigmentation around the eyes very attractive btw.
