@d.k.2272
@d.k.2272 2 месяца назад
It doesn’t matter what stage… I have worked with all stages. It is also generational and cultural. I have had patients in their 30s up to their 90s and to watch them eat would verify everything said here. My father won’t eat that way because that’s just not how he was raised or how his family ate. He got diagnosed with a whole host of things all related to diet as we know now that he could have the opportunity to reverse, but he literally refuses to eat differently because that’s just how he does it. It’s how he was raised. He also holds his diet as something that is very masculine to eat so much meat and processed junk. Eating vegetables or “salads” is what women do to maintain their weight. You don’t have to have memory impairment to refuse to eat vegetables. but it is very common for people whose memory starts slipping to want to just eat the things that provide them with the most dopamine or whatever is most familiar to them.

Such good news. I am 10 years past the age both my grandmother and father began exhibiting symptoms of their memory loss. They really started showing signs around age 60. I am now 71, my husband who eats mostly like me, has no signs of dementia either. I am at my goal weight and all things one gets medicated for as seniors, we do not have to take. Our food is delicious. So glad we are eating right. I used to be crippled with arthritis, the diet fixed that quickly for me. I don’t walk with even a cane. I most often walk 5+ miles a day. @courag1
@courag1 2 месяца назад
@@Petunia-fl9lu Genetics do play into it. Dementia was in my father AND maternal grandmother. But the dementia of Alzheimer’s has a vascular component, if one eating lots of meat has clogged arteries in their heart, there is a vert strong chance, that the blood supply to the brain is clogged up. Whether a person is starved of oxygen, no matter the method, brain cells will die. The reason a very low fat vegan diet works, is that it will normalize weight, get rid of visceral fat and clean up the arteries. Though I follow the Dr. John McDougall diet: “The Starch Solution”, I eat a lot of raw dark leafy green, know to help open up clogged arteries via the work by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. I used to have high cholesterol but got that down adding grapefruit to my diet. Actually all citrus works. Whatever also lowers blood pressure is good for the vascular system of the whole body. I also walk 5 miles a day, weather and health permitting, or do indoor exercises. Prevention is better than trying to reverse dementia.

Great job on making the change! I work at a rehabilitation hospital and 70% of our patients are post-stroke. We are seeing an alarming number of patients in their late 20s and 30s who are recovering from strokes. They are heavy meat eaters and eat fast food. The only vegan I've cared for so far was a 92-year-old vegan woman who had a fall. Clearly, it's not the vegans suffering from all these chronic illnesses. @@RC-qf3mp Not true, being ketogenic limits the electrical signaling in the brain (because more fat = less oxygen). My mom was on this diet in the 50s for her epilepsie. Her and other children were taken off it because the other risks became too high even though the epilepsie events went down. Why someone with a healthy brain would want to limit oxygen and electrical signaling is beyond me.
@RC-qf3mp
@RC-qf3mp 2 месяца назад
@@11235Aodh they opened up the brains of people with epilepsy who were diagnosed on kids and lived their whole lives on keto, up into their 80s. After opening up their brains, doctors were amazed - their brains look like they were in their 40s, not 80s. Check out the research. There are better and worse ways to do ‘keto’. Loading up on salmon, sardines, avocados and seed sprouts is keto. So is loading up on processed CAFO meat junk and fake sugar foods. The healthiest thing for the brain is fat - from fatty fish, omega 3. The brain needs energy, and it gets that from ketones. Electrical signaling in the brain needs lots of things - mainly omega 3 and fat that comes from meat. Lots of record-setting Ultra endurance athletes - who need lots of oxygen in the body and brain - go on keto. Look up Zack Bitter. You don’t ‘bonk’ or ‘hit the wall’ on keto. See the research of Drs. Phinney and Volek on fat oxidation. Keto athletes have the highest levels recorded in human history for fat oxidation. You have been misinformed on a number of issues. For starters, look up the research on the brains of epilepsy patients on keto their whole lives. Then read about the benefits of MCT oil (which becomes ketones in the body) on dogs with Alzheimer’s and then tested on humans with Alzheimer’s. We have brain imaging to show where glucose in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s is lacking, but the ketones can fill in the gaps. The actual brain imaging. We know it works. Cognitive tests on people with Alzheimer’s proves it. Ketones > glucose.

Totally anecdotal, but when I cleaned out my mother-in-law's kitchen after she was moved into nursing care due to alzheimer's, there was a huge number of cream-based soups and sauces, cheese-based processed foods, and a freezer/fridge full of bacon, pork, red meat -- she was known for hating anything from the cruciferous family (would not touch broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage). She ate peas, green beans and corn, and caesar salad (with lots of creamy dressing and bacon) -- but few other veggies. My other experience with Alzheimers was my grandmother -- known for eating her steak 'still mooing' and for having diverticulitis, which meant she was not allowed to eat anything with 'roughage' at the time (so, very little fibre). I think there is a trend worth noting there.

Makes sense, there is only 1 blood vessel that leads up to the ears (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labyrinthine_artery), when it gets atherosclerotic like many other vessels you get hearing loss. Same for the eyes and spine, one major bloodvessel can cause a lot of problems when it clogs up. It's so annoying to hear people say "Ohhh it's due to old age!" when they stubbornly keep eating their meat and dairy (or high fat vegan would also work).

I told a friend, who is 73 years old, about this study, and he said basically that if he has to stop eating meat to prevent Alzheimer’s, well then, he’ll just have to loose his mind. Humans will always choose to do what they want, regardless of how bad it might be for their body. I knew a woman with COPD who would continue smoking while taking supplemental oxygen, there was no way she was going to give up her cigarettes until she died (which wasn’t quite true, she was forced to stop a week before she died when she was hospitalized for congestive heart failure). Similarly, people who like eating meat will continue to do so, regardless of how much it might shorten their life. I didn’t stop eating animal products to improve my health, I stoped because I never really wanted to eat meat in the first place, I ate meat simply because that’s what society (and my parents) told me to do, so I conformed to social norms, but once I understood that it was OK to eat just plants, then I was happy to do so, no convincing required.

I relate to this so much. I didn’t like eating animals and would sneak my portion of meat to the dog under the table when my parents weren’t looking or into the big potted plant that my mother had in the corner of the dining room near my chair. She couldn’t understand why the dog was always getting into her plant… oops. It was in seventh grade that I was shown a video of a quadruple bypass on a guy who mostly lived on McDonald’s and he was in his late 30s. I asked my teacher “how can I make sure that doesn’t happen to me?” She told me “ become a vegetarian.” So I looked into it and went vegetarian that day. I asked her more questions… if I could be healthy because my parents said that I would stop growing or get really sick. She gave me some information that helped and in high school I learned about veganism and felt foolish for being just vegetarian. So then I went completely vegan and I intend to stay that way for the rest of my life. I am in my mid-40s now. By my age, my dad already had a major heart attack and has been diagnosed with CHF, COPD and emphysema and has had a triple bypass and a pacemaker put in. Meanwhile, all of my doctors say I have the labs of someone considerably younger than myself. I talked to my mother into being mostly plant-based. She sometimes eats things that are considered vegetarian. She is only three years younger than my dad and she is not on any medication‘s and doesn’t have any health issues. She used to be severely overweight, but going mostly plant-based has changed that drastically... she was on her way to diabetes and high blood pressure probably followed by heart issues. Her side of the family has all kinds of cancer and heart issues. All of her labs and tests come back perfect. Meanwhile, my dad has to take so many medication‘s every day and each doctors visit comes with worse news. His heart function is around 20% and he is in his later 60s. He is tired and feels bad all the time and now he is to the point where it hurts to eat. It looks like he is coming to the end of his CHF journey. But eating vegetables is feminine and not how he was raised so he has refused to change. He still makes fun of me for being vegan. Unfortunate for him he won’t be making fun of me for much longer.

So happy to hear this study has such meaningful significance to you, on a personal level, and meaningful implications for us all! Even without a background in scientific research, I was still able to follow along, from end-to-end, at a high-level, which is more than I'm often able to say about many other tests I've attempted to read.

But the best diet for Alzheimer’s is a very “fatty diet” - a diet rich in fatty fish w/omega 3 fatty acids (DHA/EPA, not the weak ALA found in flax seed). Alzheimer’s brains have been shown with imaging scans to lack blood glucose in various regions, and to be characterized by inflammation in the brain. A ketogenic diet, high in fat, low in carbs, produces ketones that can reach the areas of the brain low in glucose. So no, you are wrong, a ‘fatty diet’ is not bad, but optimal for Alzheimer’s patients as shown in various studies, experiments and brain imaging scans.

I agree the short term improvements seen probably are not due to decrease plaque size, but rather increased NO production from eating plants. The increased NO will then allow increased dilation of the arteries improving blood flow to the brain among other vital organs. Dr. Gregor has great videos about the mechanism and research behind plant consumption and Nitric Oxide production by our body. Great video, I enjoyed your presentation of the data. Well done.

What’s doing the magic is the fish oil, lifestyle, and reduction of ultra processed junk from a SAD way of eating/living. You’d get better impacts on Alzheimer’s by eating an anti-inflammatory fish-based keto diet. Throw in some MCT oil too for more ketone production. Alzheimer’s is characterized by inflammation in the brain leading to lack of glucose in the brain, as seen in brain images. Ketones can go where blood glucose has trouble reaching. Ketones fuel the brain and protect the brain. 🧠

I’m excited for these result as a person who has mainly plant-dominant diet. As a healthcare professional working with people with dementia for 14 years and a researcher, I think we should be cautious of these results. 1. Ornish has a vested interest in the results of this study. 2. Short term with low amount of participants with mild Alzheimer’s - a longer term study would be more convincing but the progression of the disease would not have positive results they’re looking for. 3. The MoCA is simple assessment and should not be as a stand alone assessment for measuring cognition. It’s standardized and people with mild dementia often remember the assessment when it’s given again, and people with mild dementia can often “outsmart” this assessment and could change the result to show a milder dementia than is actually present. I’ve had people with cognitive deficits recite the MoCA to me from memory. I’m excited for more thorough research though.

So many pro-meat folks like to say it’s the SAD that causes health issues, not the meat, and when people go vegan, it’s just eating unprocessed foods that helps. Honestly though, I’ve watched a lot of family members who were not “bad” eaters get very sick. Eggs and bacon for breakfast (not cereal or pop tarts or garbage food). Maybe a sandwich for lunch. Then steak or chicken with veggies for dinner. My father in law is morbidly obese and suffers so many health problems (cancer, aneurism, heart issues, falling) and eats ‘real food’ meat. Promising results for sure - but not earth shattering or surprising. Basically, a healthy lifestyle leads to a healthy brain. Again, can’t say that the plant-based diet was the cause for improvment, as there were several lifestyle changes for the intervention group. In addition to diet, the participants took supplements (omega-3’s are huge), engaged in moderate aerobic exercise such as walking and strength training for at least 30 minutes a day; stress management including meditation, stretching, breathing, and imagery for 1 hour a day; and online support groups for participants and spouses or study partners for 1-hour sessions three times a week. The standard care group basically ate the SAD diet and didn’t do any lifestyle interventions. So not surprising that the intervention group, with an overall healthier lifestyle did better. Also worth noting, insulin resistance is a major cause of heart disease - more so than LDL cholesterol (not saying LDL doesn’t matter, but seems to be something that vegans like to downplay). You also really downplay exercise and the other interventions - and insert your personal bias that the plant based diet is the probable cause of the positive changes. They did moderate exercise - walking and weight training. Many studies show the benefits of exercise for brain health and cognition. I really wish that Ornish would just do a dietary intervention study without the other stuff to show that plant based is better if that’s the conclusion you want. And don’t put it up against the SAD diet, we all know that SAD is terrible and disease promoting. There is also evidence for the ketogenic diet for reversal of neurodegenerative disorders. Bottom line - WFPB, KETO, etc. focus on Whole Foods, reduction of added sugar/refined carbohydrates, and seed oils, which are more likely the root the cause of neuroinflammation. I wish you would see the big picture here, but after watching many of your videos your personal bias always comes before science.

My husband has AD and his neurologist said there is little good evidence - so far - for diet having effect, but there IS good evidence for exercise. He recommended 30 minutes walking per day. I agree that it is a big shame that they did not control all the other variables and have the diet the only difference between the two groups.
