There is so much more to say on this topic, I bearly scratched the surface of the chemistry and ethical considerations of leather in this video. Just more to chat about and explore later. Here are some links for you to explore more:

It's really frustrating that companies are allowed to mislabel their fabrics. I've seen "new cotton" and other similar misleading labels to disguise the fact that they're using polyester.

Definitely. Everything seems to be like that now. It's like everyone realized they can get away with lying to the consumer and it's open season.

Materials Engineer (with interest in historical clothing) here. First: thanks for the video, I fully agree! And I have a few additional comments :) 1) One reason, why plasticizer additives from the 60s seem to be longer lasting could be the fact, that no one was concerned with their harmful effects on the human body back then. Hence, more and/or more harmful (but also more efficient) plasticizers were used than today. 2) Plastic recycling is a huge topic on itself. But I want to add also, that plastic can not be indefinitely "re-cycled" (unlike metal). The material degrades every time it is heated up, losing mechanical and chemical stability, as well as manufacturing predictability. 3) Coated fabrics pose a huge problem to dry cleaners as the coating and substrate fabric can react differently to the chemicals used in the process usually resulting in the coating separating from the substrate. This ultimately destroys the clothing.

Thanks for the additional info! In textile conservation we are just starting to grapple with the degradation of these materials and how we are going to clean/repair them, so there are a ton of unknowns.

I'm just worried about the new "green" materials lasting an even shorter time. Every new development these days seems to be intended for an ever shorter lifespan. Given the percentage of energy that is used in manufacturing and distribution (not simply in making the base materials), constantly replacing a "green" product could easily be worse for the environment...and definitely more expensive, which is of course usually the point. I'd rather have something sturdy and high quality that lasts a lifetime with marginally higher initial impact than buy something new with fancy marketing every few months and then throw it away. But nobody wants to sell that, because they want to drain every penny possible from their customers.

Great topic and yes, "vegan leather" is a classic example of euphemistic terms in the textile industry! I think a video on the history of the secondhand clothing industry would be fantastic!

Great video idea! I do a lot of research on alterations (a video might be in the works) but the second hand industry is also super interesting.

When I first started seeing "Vegan Leather" I was like "What???" I knew that leather is only produced one way and that's from the hides of animals. These folks who rejoice at this "New" form of leather or any other material are just fooling themselves. People just need to educate themselves to what the plastic producers are trying to push.

Pay attention to smell. Bad-quality PU has a lot of "off-gassing" that is not proven, but may suggest that you're being re-exposed over and over to some chemicals. Many PUs don't off-gas and that seems to corollate with their perceived higher value/ up-front retail cost. Japan has a lot of PUs we don't seem to have that behave differently; I import fashion stuff from Japan and whatever their PU is it is fundamentally much different then the PU typically marketed in the states. I have no idea why this is, but it's an important detail I've noticed in terms of detecting counterfeit goods; yes, there are counterfeit goods of "designer" PU items. In my experience, the Japanese PUs do not last forever (less then 10 years) but their decline seems to be more connected to a change in weather (moving houses) and how they are stored and less about wear and tear. If anyone here likes whimsical fashion, but wants to stick with leather; keep an eye out on the brand "kate spade". They do novelty-themed collections a few times a year with heart-shaped bags and cute oversized bag charms. It's not cheap, but I will say the sale price is a very fair discount that sort of allows the brand to have two distinct "price points tiers" for customers to buy from.

but what shoes should i buy then :(( from my knowledge, animal leather is also not biodegradable since many chemicals are used to impregnate them + the whole process is very harmful to the enviroment....

Animal leather is going to last much longer than PU leather and is far more biodegradable than plastic. No choice is perfect, in fact neither is great but I would recommend buying the product that will last the most amount of time in use.

I should note that even high quality leather shoes very often have other plastic components.

I know more than one vegan who purchases leather shoes and bags because that's more in line with their values than so-called vegan leather. And as a Canadian, I can't see the total desecration of animal habitat wreaked by fracking and claim that plastic leather is vegan.
