You just knew him on Super right? He was never like that on Z or the first series. Yes, he did like a good fight and strong opponents but he fought to protect not to amuse himself, that is... until Super... and he was just naive, not dumb. For me the humor on Super was a big letdown, I wanted to see more of the first DB series on this, unfortunately, Toriyama was not how he used to be and Toyotaro was too involved in the story at this point. So I consider Super a nice spin-off.

Weirdly enough it’s not that crazy honestly everything he has done has been for his people and heritage, so the moment he made his own family they became priority.

It’s 100% in his character, even from the start. Vegeta has always been about the Sayian race. Plus his child will surpass him and Goku and live on the rivalry honestly.
