In our most epic ever tale, we share the story of a sweet pepper crop that was almost lost to a formidable enemy: Bacterial Wilt.
Sweet pepper is a major crop at Winterthorn, and is one of the high-value crops we that are part of our strategy. But it can also be one of the most difficult crops to grow successfully and requires a lot of skill, determination and good fortune.
The crop of red and yellow sweet pepper that we planted in Dec 2021 in our shadehouse at Westgate became one of the toughest experiences that our farm has ever had.
It all started off so positively and the crop was growing well. That is until we saw the first signs of a wilting disease that would soon leave us losing hundreds of plants.
But despite all the challenges, our Team managed to come through the trials and learnt some valuable lessons along the way.

Impressive work. I do have a suggestion Please research plastic mulch. I think it could improve your productivity of peppers. You would lay down your drip Irrigation pipe first. Than cover it with the plastic mulch. Then poke holes through the plastic mulch then plant your peppers. Cost and availability of plastic mulch in Zambia could be a problem. But if possible try one row as a try run. With this method you will use a friction of water and the plants grow and produce way better
@mondofarms4343
@mondofarms4343 3 месяца назад
Ok. Thanks. Plastic mulch is not yet readily available in Zambia. Meantime, we have started using straw as mulch, which is quite effective. We will feature it in our videos soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video, but was saddened seeing that mountain heap of peppers that had to be discarded. All plant diseases can be prevented and cured, as they're all linked to one nutrient deficiency or the other, but the nutrition must be administered to the plant in the correct redox state, and properly chelated. If you don't mind, I'd like to suggest that you look into "Regenerative Agriculture" by John Kempf, it could really be life-changing. Also, I'd like to suggest two books: Mineral Nutrition and Plant Disease, authored by Lawrence Datnoff and Quality Agriculture, authored by John Kempf. Keep up the amazing work you do, cheers!

Thank you for your honesty in the video. As a farmer in Kenya, I've had my own stressful experience with bacterial wilt in tomatoes and peppers and can 100% relate. Comforting to know I'm not alone. More research needs to be done on this to help farmers as I know several who are struggling with this. Congratulations on your resilience and keep it up!

I really love your videos. I am new to this channel, but I am definitely subscribing. Sweet peppers are one of my favourite crops to eat. I grew it once, and cut back my grocery shopping bill for months. That was last year, some how since I haven't been able to grow them as abundantly again. But I just keep trying. I keep learning, and as soon as the weather heats up a bit, I am sowing seeds, and potting up seedlings again. I love growing my own food. And hope to one day make it a business. Your videos are teaching me so much. Thank you.

I hear you. The video you are referring to was from some time ago. We have improved the amount of "translation" we include in the comments when including footage from the farm videos updates in our local languages. Sadly, there is nothing we can do about the older videos that were already finalised and uploaded to RU-vid.

Air flow is everything for healthy plants + soil. If you plant too close then they're not drying out fast enough. Mold & fungis thrive on moisture.

@mondofarms4343 11 месяцев назад
Indeed, rhat is a great point. We do try to do that. But I'm not always 100% up to the task. The truth is that I initially started this RU-vid channel with our own Zambians as our primary target audience. It is even much appreciated because of the amount of vernacular we have in the backstory clips. But of course, the world is global, and the channel has now gained audiences much farther afield. Our videos are appreciated by people from so many different countries across the world. It is only fair to try and be more inclusive. I can't edit the old videos already published, but I will try harder to give contextual summaries in the ones we produce going forward. Take care.

@mondofarms4343
@mondofarms4343 10 месяцев назад
Thanks, Kody. Theft hasnt really been an issue so far. We had a couple of our chaps take some plumbing items some time ago, but we caught them and fired them. Our main strategies are: A) We have built a strong loyal team who have a sense of ownership of the farms. This is done by paying them well and looking after them (funerals, health, leave days, etc), and especially treating them with respect. B) Building good relationships with our neighbours.

The trash heap has spoken! Yes! Yes! I have had some terrible experiences with sweet peppers, from thrips, snails, slugs to bacterial infection to fungus. However, you made a pertinent point, which is to grow a lot of it to offset the losses. I made 'money' on that crop nevertheless. ...I love the way you say "money".

There is no way l would treat at that time, knowing the long waiting time before next harvesting. Risking some plants dying and still be able to harvest all the fruits, even from dead plants is the risk I would have taken. I know you respect your supplier and appreciate their "free" advise, but you would have been better off saving the cost of the chemical and labor to apply it. I was a feed mill livestock officer for years and know how such enterprises operate.
@mondofarms4343
@mondofarms4343 Год назад
Thanks Patrick. Indeed, the saga of that crop something we learned a lot from. Looking back after the heat of battle had died down and assessing our day-to-day decisions is sobering. A lot changed in our farm and farming after that, including how we view suppliers. It took me a while to know how to even tell the story. Mind you, I find sharing the stories cathartic and a great help. Take care.
