Just enjoy his playing and stop complaining. You don’t see a Sam Applebaum video often but when he finally drops one everyone gripes about the audio and doesn’t compliment is amazing playing.

I’d be willing to bet this was mixed this way to sound as natural as possible. To not be all sample replaced and fake sounding. What most of you are used to listening to is made perfect in the studio. This isn’t. That’s why this is great.

Why does this sound like it was filmed on a flip phone

I'm listening to this with Beyerdynamic DT770 250 Ohm studio headphones, on a flat EQ. This sounds like a mostly unaltered, raw recording. So much criticism, yet this was done intentionally (I'm sure) to allow the listener to hear the natural acoustics of the drums & triggers without so much of the added magic.

I'm willing to bet the studio version has 3x the mics this mix does, and 10x the care put into the final product. This mix feels like a bunch of bleed or something is throwing the cymbals off, and it may be because it looks like they went with only a spaced pair for overheads. Sam's drum parts are not done justice with this mix, but whatever. Great video, can't wait for more.
