It looks very much like a self-portrait to me. I am artist and have used myself and family members in my studies before adding them and changing them in the final composition. He has changed himself slightly in the battle painting. I do think that he was so renowned at that time, and in such favor by Philip IV that he would be allowed to be present in such a scene.

Of course, this is a self portrait! While the Spanish were very strict, Diego was considered a friend to King Phillip, probably as close a friend the king had without royal blood. Diego wasn't an advisor or member of counsel. He repeatedly portrayed the king with all his faults... and got away with it! So of course, Diego would have had permission to put himself in the Surrender of Breda. How many art historians have said how audacious it was of him to put himself in Las Meninas... but, he's there! And look at the similarities of the features: the forehead, the hairline, the nose, the shape of face (taking into consideration the slight changes due to age). This is, without doubt in my mind, Diego Velasquez - one of the greatest, if not THE greatest artist of all times!

You are so right. Eventually Diego was the only artist His majesty Felipe would sit for. You can see their relationship manifested in the many stages of portraits through Felipe's reign. From young and stoic to his later years with great sympathy and humanity, even effection

This is an amazing video of a discovery of a Velazquez portrait right out of their own collection and being a person out of another of their own paintings. Haven't they seen the video of one of the worlds supposed greatest art forger and his own secrets on how he was able to fool these art experts with his partner and how he chose his subject matter from other masterpieces?

I can't really get over on how few of paintings that is in captivity that were painted and done by Velazquez over his total career of painting as a court painter for the King of Spain. They say on the average of two and seven tenths of paintings per year. Who the hell are those art experts trying to kid? Maybe there is some job openings as brewers?

I studied his paintings during the seventies, and find it an insult by these so-called experts to claim he has been rediscovered. He was never lost except to the same arseholes who wax lyrical over Mondrian or Jackson Pollock.

I very much enjoy so much great art pre-20th century, however of all the great artists, court artists, lauded artists of the 17th century Velazquez is one of my least favorites. Mostly a portrait painter he has very little of the excitement of say Caravaggio, Rembrandt, David or Van Gogh. While I study and research at times all of these artists and work. It lacks excitement for me or the emotion I need to really enjoy a work of art.
