Following up from my previous video on the Velobuild 168: Can a $500 frame compete with a $1700 race bike? Today we finally answer that question now that I've gotten a chance to put this frame through its paces.

Is this frame better than Winspace? The best way to answer is: Spend as much as you can on both wheels and frames. If you can only afford $600 buy a VeloBuild. If you can afford $1500 buy a Winspace. And if you can afford $4000 buy a Tarmac SL7 frame. Velobuild isn't trying to compete with frames costing more $1000, and their customer base fully understand that.

I would still be left wondering if it’s really worth it. You just know that some of the differences can be hard to perceive and are very relative in real life (on the bike)… 🤷‍♂️ If you know how cheaply some of the big brands produce their frames, then these should come really close.

I've just discovered your channel & am enjoying your videos. I'm thinking of buying a Chinese carbon frame & building myself a bike, but I'd prefer a more relaxed endurance type geometry rather than an aggressive race geometry. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for watching! Relaxed endurance geometry is a difficult one to define, because this geometry can mean different things to different people. I'd recommend visiting Velobuild, Winspace, and Yeoleo's website, and comparing their available frames to you desired geometry.

Wow, amazing build, and extra kudos for the paint job. I would love a separate in depth video of how you did it. Lots of interesting things, especially that FSA stem thingy. The only thing i found surprising is your ftp. Is it really only 260W?

@@abedfo88 everything. If you're a worthless cyclist I'm not interested in your opinion on bikes. Especially all the qualitative largely BS stuff around stiffness, compliance and so on. You don't ask your hairdresser about your health, you shouldn't get your bike info from someone who can't drop you.

I just received my VBR 168. Why didn’t you go with the SL7 stem? Does the FSA 69 headset fit perfect with the correct bearings? Just wondering all these small issues before I build mine.

Truthfully I prefer the Dengfu in term of sheer performance. it's stiffer and feels more geared toward actual racing. The geometry is also different, which you also need to consider. However, VB's customer support is better and they offerr custom paint. Best thing to do is figure out which is these details are most important to you. but also makes sure you spend MOST of your budget on wheels. Wheels are far more important than frame.

How do you get that extra data in Strava? Mostly the Peak Power data that shows your 5min avg etc... I like the beers counter too...

New subscriber here. Great videos. Any chance of you getting the Velobuild 218 built as peaking my interest and yiy certainly know what you are doing. For reference I've been in the bike industry for 17 years and these frames have come on incredibly in 10 years. So much so I'd buy one.

Just watching this again, I saw that the 268 had a new seatpost and it comes with 0mm setback and I want it. I hate the setback on my 168, I’ve been trying to reach them to get the seatpost but no luck yet…

The seatpost on the 268 is not compatible with the 168. And VeloBuild does not make a 0mm setback post for the 168. Kind of a shame, but I can understand the decision especially given the price point.

SIGNIFICANTLY easier with the FSA headset than trying to route a fully integrated cockpit. Total game changer for me

Like the color. In terms of the handlebar why did you opt out of the velobuild non integrated handlebar (separate bar and stem)? Agree with you and others that velobuild needs to provide more install info eg (send out the torque info with the product)

The Dengfu is much stiffer. I prefer it over the 168. However, the R12 discontinued.

im still riding the first gen allez sprint, not impressed with the the new one. Still weighing my options, how does the stiffness on this velo frame compare to the old allez sprint? Im already sold on the look and price.

Not as stiff as the Allez Sprint, which make sense because it's alloy. However, the 168 is stiff enough yet lighter to offset. There are other carbon bikes out there that are stiffer, but will cost you.

I honestly don't know what mold velo build is using or which brand they are buying from. but for the price I believe is one of the lower end mold we are using in China to build clone frame. there are higher end clone which weights and looks almost identical to the real frame. frames are almost all made in China anyway

What is even more interesting...is the fact there are a few private/micro brands using Velobuild frames, but are charging more for the same frame. Dolan and Workswell come to mind. I fully understand why this business model works, because creating and/or purchasing molds is expensive. However, paying significantly more for a frame that I know can be had for half the price doesn't make a lot of since.

For my needs, the geometry of the 168 works better for me. I do however think that with a great set of aero wheels...both bikes would be pretty close in "performance".

Wheels, rolling resistance, and drivetrain efficiency are far more important for both speed and watt savings than the frameset.
