“Heroine” by Mindy McGinnis is not just a deeply effective cautionary tale, but a direct and multi-layered examination of how quickly addiction takes hold and the deeply emotional and lasting toll it takes on a family, a community, and a young person in its grips. Gritty and alarmingly realistic, “Heroine” is careful to make the point that addiction, especially addiction to opioids, can and will claim anyone - wealthy and poor, white and black, young and old. Fentanyl overdoses are claiming young Americans at an unprecedented rate. According to the CDC, fentanyl has largely fueled a more than doubling of overdose deaths among children ages 12 to 17 since 2020. Statistic after statistic, study after study, shows the same thing: we are in a crisis. “Heroine” has been removed from library shelves and classrooms for “glorifying” drug use. But if you read this book, you know the opposite is true. “Heroine” is harrowing and hard to read - but necessary. One way to protect your children from the very real and present danger of opioid addiction is by offering them safe exploration - a book.

Banned in one Utah, one Texas and four Florida school districts due to challenges. Some are pending investigation. People making the ridiculous claim that these are not banned because they can find them in a book store are being intentionally disengenuous. This may or may not remain banned in those districts, but I would think this book is appropriate for high schoolers, and that for such students, their parents are capable of deciding for their own child. I was not sheltered from gritty, controversial and difficult subjects in school, and whaddaya know, I'm not a [tolls, fill in your own ignorant accusations here].

@RetNemmoc555 Inappropriate material restricted for minors in schools is not a banned book. Their parent can get the book and let their child read if that's what they want.

@@feffygracie I understand your argument, but it is just a semantic one. I'll stick with the commonly accepted meaning. The book is prohibited (or proposed to be) from school libraries within the district. It is a government ban that applies to a specific location. Is a state or local government ban on smoking in restaurants not a ban just because you can go outside and smoke cigarettes? I see this "not a ban" statement often, so I just wanted you to be clear on what you mean by that. That's all I have to say, thanks for the reply.

@@Jeff-m9o2e First, it’s a bit stalkerish to bother reading a commenter’s profile. Second, Latvians after the initial Soviet invasion during WWII have relocated all over the world. Third, Republicans make proud noises about the books and other cultural aspects that they’ve already banned or intend to.

It looks like MSNBC should list the locations (states, school systems, library systems, other) where a particular book has been "banned" (either for a time in the past or currently). That will take care of half of the critical comments. MSNBC, can you do this? I suggest place the list in both the text at the end of each video, and also in the written text on RU-vid that goes along with the book-specific commentary.

*I saw a Senate hearing where a senator read aloud passages from these books. Women in the hearing room were trying to hide their embarrassment! The network had to 'bleep' out half of what he said! If it can't be broadcast, our kids shouldn't be reading it! Or having it read to them!*
