I hope you enjoy this tour of the Velux showroom. Mark from Velux discusses different skylight options, solar powered shades, Velux Active and more. If you would like to visit their showroom in person it's open Monday - Friday: 8 am - 4:30 pm and is located at 2740 Sherwood Heights Dr, Oakville, ON.

Well I live in humidity state Clearwater Florida and it rains every afternoon so I would definitely just buy the fixed because the others are way too much trouble.

To each their own. I personally would install operable skylights, with builtin shades, in any of my projects. It provides many benefits and home comfort.

Great information and 2 questions. 1. Can a skylight be diamond shaped with the ability to open the latch to prevent water build up? 2. Is it possible to put reflective tint on the glass for privacy?

Thanks! 1) I have personally never seen a diamond shaped skylight. I don’t believe VELUX makes one. I’m sure with a quick Google search you could find someone who manufactures custom skylights. 2) Yes, it is possible to install reflective tint on the glass for privacy. This is done often on commercial buildings.

@@simpsonpropertiesltd thank you for the feedback. The reason I mentioned the diamond shaped skylight is that when it rains, water can't settle 180 degrees due to its point at the top.

What about Glass durability ie Snow load, tree branches etc.? Also are shocks that hold up window easily replacable?

I live in Toronto and have had zero issues with snow load during the winter months. It’s a heavy duty chain that is used to open/close the skylight.

If I am going on vacation and wish the windows to remain shut and locked in place until my return, how do I go about locking them.

You control if the skylight is opened or closed. They only automatically open if you program them too. When they are closed they are locked and can’t be open from the outside.

Do you have to have vaulted ceilings to have the skylights shown in the video?

Nope. They can be installed on a sloped or flat roof. I have two 4’x4’ skylights installed at my house. It’s a flat roof and are installed on a sloped curb.

We have some non-opening deck mounted Velux skylights that were installed in 2005, and they have not held up well. We live in a cold climate, and when it gets below -10, there's condensation on the windows that drips down the next time things warm up. Also, the wood on the inside has not held up with the exposure to the sun. These are up very high in our house, and not easy to access. Are the skylights they make today any better than the ones from 2005? Do they have any models that collect condensation water in a channel, so that it doesn't drip down the side of the opening? I have to be honest... The Velux skylights we have replaced the original skylights in the house. I thought they would be better and hold up, but they've been a disappointment. Are there any other brands that are better for cold weather? Also, are there any models out there that can take exposure to the sun over the years and not have to continually be painted?

Hi, I’m sorry to hear about the problems you’re having. None of their models now have wood incorporated. They are maintenance free. They are one the only skylight brand I have used and haven’t had any issues so far. It sounds like the condensation issue you are having might be due to an HVAC issue. Any windows or skylights have to be considered when HVAC design is being done. We have a large return air near our skylight that in a high wall location. No condensation issues.

Ours are about ten years old and manual. The wood is no issue nor condensation. That being said I’m in the UK so the climate and temperature inside can vary.
