The actual meaning and value of most artworks isn't in the works themselves, but in the space around and between them. They create this environment for people to ponder, wonder, get lost, be puzzled, imagine, interact, have conversations.

@hd-xc2lz
@hd-xc2lz 5 лет назад
@@airmark02 Why elitist? There is no fee for joining in, most contemporary galleries are free, anyone can make art, just takes time and practice to learn. In terms of theoretical background, simply have to read the texts. You don't have to buy art to participate.
@airmark02

@@hd-xc2lz Making art or living a creative life is not the issue i am referring to. The art world as it is now celebrated has now become totally market driven . Just another refection of a cynical corruption driven by the elite dealers, academics & new flavor of the month art stars.
@hd-xc2lz
@hd-xc2lz 5 лет назад
@@airmark02 Sorry, too much of a blanket condemnation. I know established artists, failed middle aged artists (still making work, but hardly showing) and young artists who are FAR more interested in their own work than the sales end. Also know art historians and reviewers who are much more interested in the thoughts behind works rather than prices. It's a big world. And everyone at least pretends to hate the art fairs, stick their noses up at them ...(but then attend them anyway). Regarding art stardom, if one is lucky enough to taste that it's nothing to shun, and in truth on average it rarely lasts long, 3 or 4 years, more useful for acquiring a good teaching gig than income to plan a family on.

A lot of contemprary art is made with an idea of "the encounter" of new things, or familiar things in new contexts. My professor was obsessed with deleuze and this "encounter". She said it gradually opens us up to new ways of seeing and being, and to a certain extent I agree. But after going to countless of these shows, it all comes off as a huge spectacle of political conviction, entertainment, and most of all - cynical irony. If you think of the things in your life that really changed you, you would most likely point out tragedies and romance. And you would most likely conceptualize them as narratives where you acted out a role as victim, victor, child, coward, voulnerable. Which brings me back to art. In my experience, the greatest "encounters" with art that I have had has been those of recognition. Those that feel like they are relevant to me. They reveal to me some new way of enterpreting what I am, have been and could be. They are often full of atmosphere, drama and sometimes through narrative. I think that is the age old and eternal marker for great art. Contend with that in life which REALLY matters, our stories of personal triumph and tragedy. Do not be political (ideological), because then you just repeat an external belief structure without trying to find something out.
@gwagon6506
@gwagon6506 5 лет назад
Intelligently said. These days I approach a visit to any contemporary/ modern art gallery as I would an amusement park. Zero emotion, zero atmosphere or space for contemplation or transcendence... just pompous political gesturing by mediocre art students and the gullible hoards looking for something quirky and culture-signalling to put on Instagram.

Indeed. The exhibit that I found most recognition in was the racks of clothes, looks like costume store. I thrift shop a lot, recycles stores etc. Fast fashion. Too many clothes. I could connect with this. Like minded. I'm not the only one. Here is an encounter. Agreed ideology is detrimental to art. impressive layout and presentation. I like the raw wood touch against those bricks, nice touch. would be nice to tour the rooms with very few attendees to really soak in the atmosphere and of course the works. invariably bombastic, crass -- but looks like some nice touches here. Global Reminder: Remember to attend and support independent artist/curator spaces that are punky brave & free -- this is where ALL the NEW ART begins, eventually cherry-picked by large institutions. Conceptual art is, essentially, a 180 degree departure from what we have traditionally thought of as “art”. And by art, I mean the visual arts: painting, drawing, sculpture architecture etc. The big problem is that while the traditional visual arts have a millenniums long history, this new kid on the block,does not. Sculpture has evolved from The Venus of Willendorf to the Great Sphinx, the Venus De Milo, Michelangelo's David up to Rodin, the Statue of Liberty and Alexander Calder. The arts of painting and drawing can be traced back to the cave paintings of Lascaux in France to The Sistine Chapel, Monet and Degas, Mark Rothko and beyond. And through all of the changes, these art forms have stayed essentially the same:making marks on paper, canvas, wood, plaster etc. and building up forms in three dimensions as sculpture and architecture. Along with the evolution of these art genres has developed a language and a set of criteria that form standards by which such pieces can be critiqued, evaluated and placed in historical context. And while some people might like the lurid landscapes of Thomas Kinkade, his paintings are not and should not be hung alongside the landscapes of Church, Cole, van Gogh, Cézanne and Thiebaud. There IS such a thing as bad art and we know what it looks like and why! It is called esthetics. This cannot be said of Conceptual art. All sorts of crappy, bogus and hare brained stuff is piled up or strewn across the floors of museums and exalted as art because no one knows or can know what is worthy and what is not. So you get pieces of blank white paper crumpled up in a ball, three basketballs suspended in a fish tank and cans of human excrement. Welcome to the wonderful, wacky world of Conceptual art !

The space where the show is put together is breathtaking. The sheer scale of the works presented there is just second to none. I am not a fan of video or electric powered installations because the speed in which technology moves make them so ephemeral and useless in a really short time and pointless if there is no permanent source of energy. It is like a sculpture made out of a cucumber or something. I saw beauty, I saw meaning, I saw intention, but then I saw a lot of literal garbage as well.

I know people need class resentment to justify bashing my best chance to see nice colours, interesting shapes and fresh ideas in the world's most beautiful city, but this is an utterly ridiculous estimate. If you are in Europe, fly into Venice on a budget airline for about fifty bucks, stay at a hostel for about the same, and pay the very reasonable 25 euro ticket price and you're in. Meanwhile, Madonna tickets cost "just £61.50 with additional tickets available at at £126.60, £226.50, £351.50, £426.50 and £481.50". And let's not even talk about sports.

Have just added a comment to the following RU-vid Video Whitney Biennial 2019 | Contemporary Art | Showcase Why not interview the public who view the work for their responses to particular works to gauge the "authenticity" of intent by the artist? since the majority of those viewing such artworks spend just seconds on them, it would be interesting. Overall, the "same old, same old" - individuals calling themselves artists wrapped up in their own little worlds and justifying their intellectual and emotional fantasies and almost psychotic behaviour as something of importance to a world not really interested as it has better things to do. This kind of pseudo-art changes nothing really, not like those who have to make a living in the real world working at the essentials to sustain life. like labourers, farmers, builders, engineers, doctors, servicemen, etc etc etc and make it better but who in their hearts do not necessarily endorse such ways of life and actually do the real striving for something better. These viewing public spend seconds before each work which says as much about the validity and vacuousness of them, many just use the iPhones as a token gesture of interest! It is all soon forgotten......so sad.

you should spend more of your time in Art Museums... which collect old and established art from the past

A lot of this looks cool, some questionable pieces but nothing particularly horrifying. I don’t see the big deal. Plus creepy things are interesting, you watch David Lynch to make you think not to make you feel comforted or necessarily happy

The Big F U, not doing a very good job of it then. In the play list “my art” I’m guessing they go past your work at some point as the videos are of other artists shows?

Honestly, it was a nightmarish hodgepodge of uninspiring, depressing, ugly, stuff, all lumped together under the word "art." I found myself walking through it either shocked by the hideousness or just laughing aloud at the sham these "artists" were able to pull off, by getting tourists to waste minutes of their vacation staring at their ugly heaps of crap. Unbelievable! If the original Arsenale shipbuilders could only see what an insult this exhibit is to their skills, in a space wherein they were able to construct complicated wooden ships by hand.

There were much better things to see than this. Here’s a way better video that really shows the extent of the exhibition with commentary and context: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H_6Qzb6yN5k.html

DIEGO SANCHEZ Of course, I agree. When I encounter such exhibitions,, I think back to when The Impressionists first showed in the late 1800s in Paris. Their work was roundly derided . And I like to believe that I would not have joined those harsh critics. So, initially, I am tempted to hold back my condemnation of Contemporary Art. But... I feel confident in declaring that this stuff really is empty posturing.
